Banchero, Suggs Out: Magic Lines

Paolo Banchero and Jalen Suggs are both out for the Orlando Magic. Banchero has a low-grade right high ankle sprain reported at four to six weeks, and Suggs a mild right knee bone bruise, with a re-evaluation in two weeks. Orlando visits Toronto on Wednesday and Friday, and Friday's early line has the Raptors favored by 3.5 with a 226.5 total.

The Orlando Magic will play at least the next two weeks without two starters. Paolo Banchero has a low-grade right high ankle sprain that is reported to carry a four- to six-week recovery, and Jalen Suggs has a mild right knee bone bruise and will be re-evaluated in two weeks. Orlando opens a two-game set in Toronto on Wednesday. Friday's early line has the Raptors favored by 3.5 points, a modest number for a team missing its top scorer and its best perimeter defender. The Best Bet on Sports has built a verified $367,520+ in profit across all sportsbooks over more than twenty years by reading what an injury line says and what it leaves out.

Orlando is 1-2. The Magic lost their first two games at home, to Atlanta and then 115-93 to Minnesota, before winning 111-102 at Madison Square Garden on Sunday without Banchero. That win cost them Suggs, who went down late in the fourth quarter. The injuries reshape the rotation for at least the next several games, and the two meetings in Toronto are the market's first chance to price it.

What Happened to Paolo Banchero?

Banchero was hurt in Friday's loss to Minnesota on October 23. Desmond Bane fell into Banchero's leg and rolled the right ankle inward. Banchero stayed in the game, aggravated the ankle in the third quarter and sat out the fourth. Banchero finished with 14 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists.

An MRI on Saturday confirmed a low-grade right high ankle sprain. The team has not given an official timeline and said only that Banchero would undergo further testing. ESPN's Shams Charania reported that Banchero will likely miss four to six weeks, which matches the typical recovery range for a high ankle sprain. Banchero said publicly after the injury that it did not feel serious, which is common with high ankle sprains early on and does not change the reported window.

What Happened to Jalen Suggs?

Suggs was hurt with 2:09 left in Sunday's win over the Knicks. On a breakaway layup, Suggs's right knee appeared to buckle on a noncontact play. Suggs stayed down for several moments and was helped to the locker room.

The Magic announced on Monday that an MRI found a mild bone bruise with no major structural damage. Suggs will be re-evaluated in two weeks. That is the best realistic outcome from a scary-looking play, but it is still at least six or seven games, and Suggs has a long injury history. Over the past two seasons, injuries limited Suggs to 92 games.

Who Else Is Hurt for Orlando?

PlayerInjuryStatus
Paolo BancheroLow-grade right high ankle sprainOut; reported 4-6 weeks
Jalen SuggsMild right knee bone bruiseOut; re-evaluated in 2 weeks
Noah PendaPartially torn right hamstringOut
Jonathan IsaacLeft knee, injury managementOut
Izaiyah NelsonLeft ankle, recoveringOut
Anthony BlackRight ankle sprainReturned Sunday

Black is the important name on the positive side. After missing the first two games, Black returned Sunday and scored 18 points with five assists and no turnovers. Black is the most likely replacement for Suggs at the point, alongside Desmond Bane in the backcourt.

What Did Sunday's Win Show About the Magic Without Banchero?

More than a single game usually does. New York led 86-76 with 9:20 left. Orlando then outscored the Knicks 35-16 the rest of the way. Franz Wagner scored nine points in an 11-0 run that gave the Magic their first lead, 87-86, with 7:25 to play, and finished with 23 points, 13 rebounds and nine assists.

Tristan da Silva scored 19 off the bench on 5-of-9 shooting from three. The Magic bench outscored New York's 47-11. Jalen Brunson led the Knicks with 28 points, and Karl-Anthony Towns and OG Anunoby added 22 each. The loss dropped New York, the defending champion, to 0-3.

It is one game. Orlando shot well from three in a stretch that is unlikely to repeat every night, and the Knicks have now lost all three games they have played. But it is evidence that Wagner can carry the offense as a point forward and that the bench can absorb minutes, which matters for how the market should price the next few weeks.

What Are the Magic vs. Raptors Odds?

Orlando plays at Toronto on Wednesday, October 28, and again on Friday, October 30. Both games tip at 7:30 p.m. Eastern.

Wednesday's spread had not been posted at several outlets Tuesday morning, which is normal the day before a game with fresh injury news. FanDuel Research's numberFire projection gave Toronto a 67.7 percent chance to win. Dimers' own model has Toronto at 62.2 percent for Friday.

Friday's line was updated Tuesday morning, after both injuries were announced, so it should already reflect them. Toronto has started the season with a 42-point win over Chicago and a 112-102 win at Washington, led there by Scottie Barnes with 28 points and RJ Barrett with 23.

Is the Raptors Line Too Short?

That is the right question to ask, and we are not going to answer it with a pick. Here is how to think about it.

A 3.5-point road spread for a team missing two starters is a small number on its face. The market appears to be giving weight to two things. The first is Sunday's result: Orlando won at Madison Square Garden without Banchero, with Wagner running the offense. The second is that two games in three nights in the same city removes travel between them, so the Friday line is mostly about matchups.

The case against the short line is just as clear. Suggs is Orlando's best perimeter defender, and Toronto's offense runs through Barnes and Barrett on the wing. Losing Suggs hurts most against exactly that kind of team. Sunday's three-point shooting is not a stable baseline. And the gap between numberFire's 67.7 percent for Wednesday and a spread of only 3.5 on Friday is worth watching. Win probabilities in the high 60s are usually associated with spreads in the mid-single digits, so either Wednesday's number opens higher or the projections and the market disagree.

The first game will also move the second. A two-game set in the same building is a rare chance to watch the market adjust in real time. If Orlando's rotation holds up Wednesday, Friday's line could shorten. If it does not, it could grow quickly.

⚔ The Live Edge: Pregame lines after an injury are built on a projected rotation. Live lines get built on the real one. When a replacement guard defends better than expected, or an offense stalls without its top scorer for long stretches, the live number usually takes a few possessions to catch up. Reading that gap as it happens is where our NBA picks come from, and it is part of why we are limited on all six major U.S. sportsbooks.

What Does This Mean for Orlando's Season?

Four to six weeks without Banchero is roughly 13 to 20 games. Suggs's two-week re-evaluation covers about seven. In a season that has already started 1-2, that is a meaningful stretch. It will test the depth Orlando built around its stars, and it will put a heavy load on Wagner.

The same weekend cost Oklahoma City Jalen Williams, who needs surgery for a fractured left fibula and a dislocated left ankle, an update to our earlier look at the Jalen Williams injury and the Suns-Thunder line. Early-season injuries to key players have become one of the biggest drivers of NBA line movement this October, as with Cooper Flagg's shoulder last week. Each one is a chance to see whether the market overreacts or underreacts. For background on Orlando, see our earlier Magic and Pistons playoff upset breakdown.

How Do Basketball Handicappers Approach a Game Like This?

They start with what is known. Banchero and Suggs are out. Black is back. Friday's line is Raptors -3.5 at one widely followed source, and Wednesday's had not been posted. Everything else, including how good Orlando is without its two starters, is an estimate built on one game.

That habit of separating facts from guesses is what separates basketball handicappers worth following from accounts that post a side and a reason. Our NBA handicappers page and our guide to basketball handicapping explain how we approach a slate, and our daily sports betting picks show it in practice. We are not taking a side on either Magic-Raptors game here.

Banchero has a low-grade right high ankle sprain, confirmed by an MRI on October 24 after an injury in the October 23 loss to Minnesota. The Magic have not given an official timeline. ESPN's Shams Charania reported that Banchero will likely miss four to six weeks, which would be roughly 13 to 20 games.

What is Jalen Suggs's injury?

Suggs has a mild bone bruise in the right knee with no major structural damage, according to an MRI announced by the Magic on October 26. The injury came on a noncontact play with 2:09 left in Orlando's 111-102 win over the Knicks. Suggs will be re-evaluated in two weeks.

When do the Magic play next?

Orlando plays two games at Toronto: Wednesday, October 28, and Friday, October 30, both at 7:30 p.m. Eastern. Banchero and Suggs are expected to miss both games. Anthony Black, who returned from an ankle sprain on Sunday, is the most likely replacement for Suggs in the starting backcourt.

What is the spread for Magic vs. Raptors?

For Friday's game, Dimers listed the Raptors at -3.5 with a 226.5 total and moneylines of Raptors -155 and Magic +130, updated Tuesday morning after both injuries were announced. Wednesday's spread had not been posted at several outlets as of Tuesday morning, and numberFire projected Toronto with a 67.7 percent chance to win.

How did the Magic beat the Knicks without Banchero?

Orlando trailed 86-76 with 9:20 left and outscored New York 35-16 the rest of the way. Franz Wagner had 23 points, 13 rebounds and nine assists, including nine points in an 11-0 run. Tristan da Silva scored 19 off the bench, Anthony Black added 18, and the Magic bench outscored the Knicks' bench 47-11.

Who else is injured for the Orlando Magic?

Besides Banchero and Suggs, Noah Penda is out with a partially torn right hamstring, Jonathan Isaac is out for left knee injury management, and Izaiyah Nelson is out recovering from a left ankle injury. Anthony Black returned from a right ankle sprain on Sunday and played 26 minutes.

Should you bet against the Magic while Banchero and Suggs are out?

Not automatically. The market has already adjusted, and Friday's 3.5-point line reflects both injuries. Orlando also won at Madison Square Garden without Banchero. Whether the line is too short depends on how the rotation performs, which Wednesday's game in Toronto will show first. We are not taking a side on either game.
