Kentucky is No. 6 in the first CFP rankings but an underdog to make the field. See the projected bracket, the playoff odds, and the Week 10 swing games.

Miami (8-0) is No. 1 in the first College Football Playoff rankings, released November 3, followed by Georgia, Utah and Indiana in the bye spots. The betting market disagrees with the committee on several teams. DraftKings prices No. 6 Kentucky (+134) and No. 9 BYU (+170) as underdogs to make the 12-team field, while No. 14 LSU (-170) and No. 12 Ohio State (-156) are favored to get in. In Saturday's top games, the lower-ranked team is favored in three of five matchups between ranked teams.

On Tuesday night the selection committee gave Miami the first No. 1 ranking in program history. It also left Ohio State out of the projected bracket and put Notre Dame in the final at-large spot. Sportsbooks responded the next morning. Georgia stayed the title favorite even though it is ranked No. 2. Notre Dame stayed the second choice at No. 11, and Miami was third.

On October 23 we compared the AP poll with the title odds. This article looks at a different question: who gets into the field. It lines the committee's top 25 up against the make-the-playoff market, sets out the bracket as it stands, and flags the Week 10 games where the betting line already disagrees with the rankings.

Rankings per the CFP selection committee, as reported by Yahoo Sports and VAVEL.

Three teams are unbeaten: Miami, Utah and UCLA. The SEC has eight teams in the top 25. Committee chair Hunter Yurachek, the athletic director at Arkansas, said on ESPN that Notre Dame's No. 11 spot comes down to schedule. The Irish have no signature win, and their only game against a ranked team was a loss at BYU.

The Bracket If the Season Ended Today

The 2026 format is unchanged: 12 teams. The four Power 4 conference champions get automatic bids, and so does the highest-ranked team from outside the Power 4. The seven at-large spots go to the next-highest-ranked teams. The top four teams in the rankings get first-round byes, whether or not they won their conference.

That rule is why Ohio State is out at No. 12. Boise State, the only non-Power 4 team in the top 25, takes the automatic bid as the No. 12 seed, and the Buckeyes drop out.

The "projected champion" labels assume the highest-ranked team in each conference wins it, which is how the committee's weekly bracket is built. First-round games are December 18 and 19 on the home fields of seeds 5 through 8. The quarterfinals are December 30 to January 1 in the Fiesta, Cotton, Rose and Peach bowls. The semifinals are the Orange Bowl on January 14 and the Sugar Bowl on January 15. The title game is January 25 at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas. Selection Day is December 6.

Committee Rank vs. Make-the-Playoff Odds

This is where the market and the committee disagree. The table below lists DraftKings' "Yes" price for each team to make the field, as published by ESPN on November 4, next to the committee's rank. The implied chance includes the sportsbook's margin, so treat the percentages as close but slightly high.

If you rank the teams by their odds to make the field instead of by committee rank, the bracket changes in four places:

Kentucky and BYU drop out. The market gives No. 6 Kentucky about a 43% chance and No. 9 BYU about 37%. Both still have to play their way through a tough schedule. Each plays a road game this Saturday as a 4.5- to 6.5-point underdog.

LSU and Ohio State get in. No. 14 LSU, at -170, has better make-the-field odds than five teams ranked above it. Ohio State, at -156, is favored to get in even though it is outside today's bracket. The market expects starting quarterback Julian Sayin to return and expects the Buckeyes to be in the Big Ten race in December. The committee rates Ohio State on the team that lost 30-18 at USC on October 31 with freshman Luke Fahey at quarterback.

Notre Dame is far more likely to get in than its seed suggests. At No. 11, the Irish are the last team in. The market still gives them a 76.7% chance to make the field, about the same as No. 5 Alabama, and the second-shortest title price on the board. Notre Dame has no conference title game that can knock it out, and with Miami coming to South Bend it has a chance at the signature win the committee says it lacks.

Utah is No. 3 with a 30-1 title price. Utah is 8-0 and holds a bye. It is still only -240 to make the field, the lowest price of any top-four team by a wide margin. The Big 12 champion gets an automatic bid, but whoever loses the Utah-BYU game this week could fall out of the at-large race entirely.

Week 10: The Line Favors the Lower-Ranked Team

The games on Saturday, November 7 show the same split. In five matchups between ranked teams in the top 14, the lower-ranked team is favored in three. Lines vary by book and by the time they were posted, so the table shows the range from CBS Sports, Sports Betting Dime, Vegas Insider and BettorsInsider.

Game (Sat., Nov. 7)CFP ranksFavoriteSpread rangeTotal
Miami at Notre Dame1 at 11Notre Dame (lower-ranked)-3.5 to -7.555.5 to 57.5
Alabama at LSU5 at 14LSU (lower-ranked)-4.5 to -5.552.5
Kentucky at Tennessee6 at 13Tennessee (lower-ranked)-5.5 to -6.550.5
BYU at Utah9 at 3Utah (higher-ranked)-4.5 to -5.547.5 to 48.5
Georgia at Ole Miss2 at 10Disputed, about a field goal either wayGeorgia -3.5 to Ole Miss -3.556.5

A No. 11 team favored by about a touchdown at home over the No. 1 team is unusual. It shows how differently the two groups measure teams. The committee ranks résumés: who you beat and where. Point spreads measure current strength, adjusted for home field. Notre Dame's résumé is thin, but the market rates the team on the field as better than Miami's, even though Miami has escaped close calls such as a double-overtime win over Florida State in Week 7.

Tennessee's line over Kentucky makes the same point. The Volunteers beat Alabama 26-10 on October 17 and are still ranked eight spots behind the Crimson Tide. The committee said the two teams were never in the same comparison group. That answer satisfies nobody, but the spread is clear about which team it thinks is better.

How the Title Odds Moved After the Rankings

According to CBS Sports and BettorsInsider, most of the national title board moved within 24 hours of the release:

TeamBeforeAfter (Nov. 4)Why
Georgia+420+370Beat Florida and stayed in the top two
Notre Dame+470+550Ranked No. 11, last team in
LSU+1000+750Market rating outruns its No. 14 rank
Texas+1400+1100Ranked No. 7 despite two losses
Ole Miss+2000+1600In the bracket at No. 10
Kentucky+8000+6000No. 6 surprised the market
Ohio State+500+1400Lost at USC and dropped out of the bracket
Indiana+850+1000Another overtime win, so a thin margin

Ohio State's move is the largest on the board. In about a week the Buckeyes went from title co-favorite to 14-1, and the committee seated them just outside the field. If Sayin's return goes smoothly, this is where a futures price can overreact. The opposite risk is just as real: a 6-2 team with no margin for error has to win out and probably beat Indiana again in the Big Ten title game.

What Moves the Committee Between Now and December 6

The committee will release five more rankings, the next on Tuesday, November 10. Three things will decide most of the bracket:

Head-to-head results among the top 14. Five of Saturday's games involve two teams already in the top 14. Expect the first big shuffle of the season next Tuesday no matter who wins.

Conference title games. The Big 12 is the clearest example. Utah, BYU and Texas Tech are all in the top 15, and the Big 12 champion is likely the conference's only safe bid. The ACC works the same way for Miami and No. 16 Wake Forest. Miami can lose in South Bend and stay in. A loss in the ACC title game would put its bye at risk.

The race for the No. 12 seed. Boise State's spot depends on staying the highest-ranked team outside the Power 4. The make-the-field price is Even. At +30000 to win the title, Boise State is a bet to get into the field, not to win it. Its Week 10 game against Colorado State is a game it has to win.

The Bottom Line for Bettors

The committee publishes a snapshot of résumés. The market prices the path from here to December 6. When the two disagree, as they do on Kentucky, BYU, LSU and Ohio State, the bet is on which one will move toward the other. Usually it's the rankings, because a team that keeps winning games where it is favored eventually builds the résumé to match. That is a tendency, not a law, and this season has already made a lot of confident predictions look bad.

Futures tie up money for months and carry a large sportsbook margin. We do most of our betting during games, where the price on a single game can lag behind what is happening on the field.

⚡ The Live Edge: A futures ticket is one price on a two-month path. Live betting is one game, one possession and a number that is often a few seconds behind the field. That is where we bet, and it is why six sportsbooks have limited us. Get the free live pick.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who is No. 1 in the first College Football Playoff rankings of 2026?

Miami is No. 1 in the first CFP rankings, released November 3, 2026, at 8-0. It is the first time the Hurricanes have been No. 1 in the CFP rankings. Georgia (7-1), Utah (8-0) and Indiana (8-1) complete the top four, and those four hold the first-round byes in the projected bracket. Alabama, Kentucky, Texas and UCLA are ranked fifth through eighth.

Why is Ohio State out of the projected College Football Playoff at No. 12?

The highest-ranked team outside the Power 4 conferences gets an automatic bid. In the first rankings that team is No. 25 Boise State, which takes the No. 12 seed. That pushes the 12th-ranked team, Ohio State, out of the field. The Buckeyes are 6-2 after losing 30-18 at USC on October 31 with backup quarterback Luke Fahey starting. DraftKings still had Ohio State at -156 to make the playoff as of November 4.

Why is Notre Dame ranked No. 11?

Committee chair Hunter Yurachek said on ESPN that Notre Dame's ranking comes down to schedule. The Irish are 7-1, but their only game against a ranked opponent was a loss at BYU, and they have no signature win. Their home game against No. 1 Miami on November 7 is the chance to get one. Sportsbooks rate Notre Dame much higher than the committee does. The Irish are second in national title odds at +550 and are favored over Miami at home.

Is Notre Dame favored over Miami in Week 10?

Yes. Notre Dame is favored at home over No. 1 Miami, with spreads from 3.5 to 7.5 points depending on the sportsbook and when the line was posted. The total is in the mid-to-high 50s. It is one of three Week 10 games between top-14 teams in which the lower-ranked team is favored. The others are LSU over Alabama and Tennessee over Kentucky.

Who is the favorite to win the 2026-27 national championship?

Georgia is the betting favorite even though it is ranked No. 2. DraftKings listed the Bulldogs at +350 on November 4, ahead of Notre Dame (+550), Miami (+620) and LSU (+810). The committee's No. 3 team, Utah, is 30-1 and No. 8 UCLA is 65-1, so the market does not trust either undefeated team outside Miami. Prices move every week, so check a current number before betting.

How does the 12-team College Football Playoff format work in 2026?

The four Power 4 conference champions get automatic bids, along with the highest-ranked champion from outside the Power 4. The next seven highest-ranked teams fill the field as at-large teams. The top four teams in the final rankings get byes, whether or not they won their conference. Seeds 5 through 8 host first-round games December 18-19. Selection Day is December 6, and the title game is January 25 in Las Vegas.

When are the next College Football Playoff rankings released?

The second CFP rankings come out Tuesday, November 10, 2026, on ESPN, after a Week 10 slate with five games between top-14 teams. The committee releases a new top 25 each Tuesday until the final rankings and bracket on Selection Day, Sunday, December 6. Each release resets the projected bracket, so make-the-playoff prices often move sharply on Tuesday nights.
