UCLA Without Iamaleava: Is Its Playoff Price Real?

UCLA hit +105 to make the College Football Playoff a day before losing Nico Iamaleava for the season. Models now say 28%. Why the price looks stale.
UCLA's College Football Playoff price moved from +455 to +105 at DraftKings after its 17-15 upset at Oregon on October 10, an implied chance of about 49%. One day later, UCLA announced that quarterback Nico Iamaleava will miss the rest of the 2026 season with what has been reported as a torn ACL. Since then, The Athletic's model has put UCLA's playoff chances at 28%, and the Bruins' spread against Wisconsin tonight has shrunk from as high as 4.5 to 2.5. The Bruins are 5-0, but the +105 price was set for a team with its starting quarterback. That team no longer exists.
The 5-0 record isn't in question. The question is whether the betting market has caught up with what UCLA has lost. Tonight's game against Wisconsin at the Rose Bowl (7:36 p.m. ET, NBC) is the first time anyone will see this team without Iamaleava for a full game. The playoff futures market is still carrying a number from before the injury.
How UCLA Got Here
Few people predicted this start. Bob Chesney arrived from James Madison and became the first head coach in UCLA history to open his tenure 5-0, passing Red Sanders' 4-0 start in 1949. In our Week 6 playoff stakes ranking, UCLA went to Eugene as a double-digit underdog to an Oregon team the market still rated far above its record.
The Bruins won anyway. They beat No. 13 Oregon 17-15, forced seven turnovers (five fumble recoveries and two interceptions, the most takeaways by a UCLA defense in one game since 2003), and earned their first win in Eugene since 2004. On Sunday, UCLA rose nine spots to No. 12 in the AP poll, its highest ranking since 2022.
| UCLA 2026 profile | Figure |
|---|---|
| Record | 5-0 (3-0 Big Ten) |
| AP ranking | No. 12 (up from No. 21) |
| Rushing offense | 253.2 yards per game (Big Ten leader) |
| Rushing touchdowns | 19 (Big Ten leader) |
| RB Wayne Knight | 11 total TDs, 157.8 all-purpose yards per game |
| LB Sammy Omosigho | 4 forced fumbles (leads FBS), 3.0 sacks |
| Takeaways vs. Oregon | 7 |
Figures per UCLA Athletics' October 13 game notes.
That profile explains how this team wins. UCLA runs the ball, takes it away, and keeps games short. Even with Iamaleava healthy, it was not a team built on passing.
The Injury and the Overnight Repricing
Iamaleava was hurt late in the first half at Oregon, when two defenders hit him at once on a scramble. He did not return. On Monday, October 12, the program said he would miss the rest of the season. Before the injury he had thrown for 982 yards and four touchdowns with four interceptions in five games. At Oregon he threw two interceptions and lost a fumble.
His replacement is expected to be Ty Dieffenbach, a senior transfer from Cal Poly. Dieffenbach had not played this season before the second half in Eugene. There he went 3-of-6 for 43 yards, including the touchdown pass to Knight that made it 17-6, and ran four times for minus-15 yards. At Cal Poly last season he threw nine touchdowns and nine interceptions. Sophomore Madden Iamaleava, Nico's younger brother, is the other option. Neither has started an FBS game. Chesney has called the competition "decently fluid." How much bettors learn about a college quarterback change before kickoff depends on college availability reports, which are far thinner than the NFL's inactive list.
Here is how the Wisconsin market moved after the news:
| Wisconsin at UCLA | Before the injury news | Friday consensus |
|---|---|---|
| Spread | UCLA -3.5 to -4.5 | UCLA -2.5 |
| Total | 44.5 | 42.5 to 43.5 |
| Moneyline | ā | UCLA about -142 / Wisconsin about +120 |
| Implied UCLA win chance (moneyline, with vig) | ā | ~58.7% |
| ESPN Analytics UCLA win chance | ā | 57.6% |
Lines per Covers, DraftKings Network and Bettors Insider snapshots from October 15ā17. Numbers vary by book.
The side market only moved one to two points. Going from 4.5 to 2.5 crosses the 3, which matters in a low-total game, but it is a small adjustment for losing a starting quarterback. The market's message is that UCLA's offense runs through Knight and the offensive line, so the drop from Iamaleava to Dieffenbach is worth about a field goal. Bill Connelly's SP+ agrees, projecting UCLA to win 27-20 even without Iamaleava. Compare the NFL, where Lamar Jackson's ankle moved the Ravens-Falcons line about nine points.
The total dropped further than the spread, and that tells you more. Books expect a backup quarterback to throw less and run the clock even more, in a game that was already expected to be low-scoring.
The Gap Between the Books and the Models
The spread adjusted quickly. The futures board has not shown the same adjustment yet. The most recent widely reported CFP number, DraftKings' +105 from the October 11 board, was posted before the injury announcement.
| Source | UCLA playoff outlook | Implied chance |
|---|---|---|
| DraftKings (Oct. 4 board) | +455 to make CFP | ~18.0% |
| DraftKings (Oct. 11 board, pre-announcement) | +105 to make CFP | ~48.8% |
| The Athletic model (post-injury) | 28% to make CFP, 2% to win Big Ten | 28% |
| CBS Sports model (post-injury) | 14th in playoff odds, outside its bracket; 36.4% with a win tonight | under 36.4% today |
Those numbers describe very different teams. At +105, the market is treating UCLA almost like a coin flip to make a 12-team field. The two public models that have updated for the injury land between 28% and the mid-30s. Even if UCLA wins tonight, CBS's model only gets to 36.4%, still well below what +105 implies.
There is a reasonable case for the higher price. As Bettors Insider noted, UCLA has only one ranked opponent left on its schedule: USC, at home on November 28. A weak schedule is how an unbeaten team with a backup quarterback gets to 10-2 or 11-1. But "unranked" does not mean "easy." Wisconsin, Minnesota, Michigan and Illinois could all beat a UCLA team with a new passer, and the Big Ten title game requires beating a team the market rates far higher.
If you are holding a UCLA "make the playoff" ticket from before Oregon, it has gained a lot of value, and the Iamaleava news is the reason to reassess it. If you are looking at UCLA's playoff price fresh this week, make sure the number you see has been updated since Monday.
The Upstart Board: Ranking the Most Fragile Playoff Prices
UCLA is not the only surprise team priced near even money. On the same October 11 DraftKings board, eight teams sat between +105 and +425 to make the playoff. Below, we rank the ones outside the traditional power programs by how much of their price rests on evidence that could still fall apart. Number one is the most fragile.
| Rank | Team | CFP price (Oct. 11) | Implied | Why the price is fragile |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | UCLA | +105 | 48.8% | Price is from before the starting QB was lost for the season |
| 2 | New Mexico | +425 | 19.0% | Group of Five path depends on winning its league and beating other G5 teams for the automatic bid |
| 3 | James Madison | +400 | 20.0% | Same G5 bottleneck, and it lost head coach Bob Chesney to UCLA |
| 4 | Boise State | +140 | 41.7% | G5 favorite, but one loss can end the automatic-bid route |
| 5 | Texas Tech | +120 | 45.5% | Big 12 is crowded with contenders priced against each other |
| 6 | Utah | +105 | 48.8% | 5-0 with 31+ points in every game, but Houston and BYU are still ahead |
Prices from DraftKings as published by FOX Sports on October 12, 2026. Implied chances include the vig.
Utah is last on this list because its record has been tested the most convincingly: five wins, every one a blowout, and at least 31 points in each. Its price of +105 reflects real results. The concern is the schedule. The ranked home games against Houston and BYU are still ahead, and the Big 12 tends to have contenders split games against each other.
The Group of Five teams have a structural risk. The 12-team format guarantees a spot to the highest-ranked conference champion, but only one spot. New Mexico, James Madison and Boise State are not only trying to win their own leagues. They are also competing with each other for that single bid. A combined probability of roughly 80% across three teams for one guaranteed spot (plus a very unlikely at-large) suggests the market has overpriced at least one of them.
What Tonight Settles, and What It Doesn't
Tonight answers a narrow question: can UCLA win a one-score game against a good defense with Dieffenbach at quarterback? Wisconsin is 4-1, comes in off a bye on a four-game winning streak, and, according to Covers, ranks third nationally in defensive EPA per play. Edge rusher Sebastian Cheeks will test a UCLA offensive line that may be missing left tackle Jordan Davis, who is questionable. Recent history also favors the Badgers. UCLA leads the all-time series 7-4 but has lost the last three meetings, all in bowl games, and has never beaten Wisconsin at Rose Bowl Stadium.
A UCLA win would not prove the +105 price was right. It would make the Bruins 6-0 and confirm the rushing offense can carry a backup quarterback for one week. A loss would almost certainly drop UCLA's price below where the models already have it, and the futures market would react sharply on Sunday. As we wrote before Week 6, that kind of Sunday overreaction is often where value appears. Futures bettors should wait for the morning prices rather than buy before kickoff.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Nico Iamaleava out for the season?
Yes. UCLA announced on Monday, October 12, 2026, that Nico Iamaleava will miss the rest of the season. Multiple outlets reported the injury as a torn ACL. He was hurt late in the first half of UCLA's 17-15 win at Oregon on October 10, after two defenders hit him on a scramble, and he did not return. Before the injury he had 982 passing yards, four touchdowns and four interceptions in five starts after transferring from Tennessee.
Who is UCLA's starting quarterback against Wisconsin?
Ty Dieffenbach, a senior transfer from Cal Poly, is expected to make his first UCLA start. He finished the Oregon game 3-of-6 for 43 yards and a touchdown, plus four carries for minus-15 yards, and threw nine touchdowns and nine interceptions at Cal Poly in 2025. Sophomore Madden Iamaleava, Nico's younger brother, is the other option. Head coach Bob Chesney called the competition "decently fluid" and week-to-week, so confirm the starter before betting.
What is the spread for Wisconsin vs. UCLA on October 17, 2026?
UCLA is a 2.5-point home favorite as of the Friday consensus. The total is 42.5 to 43.5 depending on the book, and the moneyline is about UCLA -142 / Wisconsin +120. UCLA had been favored by as much as 4.5 before the Iamaleava news, and the total has fallen from 44.5. Kickoff is 7:36 p.m. ET at the Rose Bowl on NBC. Lines move, so check a current number before betting.
What are UCLA's College Football Playoff odds?
It depends on the source and when it was published. DraftKings listed UCLA at +105 to make the playoff on its October 11 board, up from +455 a week earlier. That board came out before the Iamaleava injury was announced. Since the injury, The Athletic's model has given UCLA a 28% chance to make the CFP and 2% to win the Big Ten, and CBS Sports' model ranks UCLA 14th and leaves it out of its projected bracket. CBS projects UCLA's odds at 36.4% with a win over Wisconsin.
Did the Iamaleava injury move the UCLA line much?
Less than you might expect. The spread fell from as high as UCLA -4.5 to -2.5, roughly two points. That reflects how UCLA wins: it leads the Big Ten in rushing at 253.2 yards per game with 19 rushing touchdowns and leans on running back Wayne Knight, so the market sees the passing game as a smaller part of the team's value. The total dropped by a similar amount, which suggests books expect an even slower, more run-heavy game with a backup quarterback.
Which unbeaten college football teams are overvalued in playoff futures?
Prices that depend on things that have since changed are the most fragile. UCLA's +105 tops the list because it predates the loss of its starting quarterback. Group of Five contenders like New Mexico (+425), James Madison (+400) and Boise State (+140) share a structural problem: in the 12-team format only one spot is guaranteed to the highest-ranked conference champion, so their prices compete for a single bid. Utah (+105) has the strongest case, with five blowout wins, but still has ranked games against Houston and BYU.
Should I bet a college football futures price right after a key injury?
Usually not right away. Futures boards update more slowly than game lines, so for a few days after major news the posted price can reflect a roster that no longer exists. Compare the book's implied probability with a model that has been updated for the injury, such as SP+, ESPN's FPI or a published playoff projection. If the gap is large, you probably don't have an edge yet. Wait for the next game to show how the team plays with its new lineup, since the market's reaction after that game tends to be bigger than the result deserves.
