Lamar Jackson's Ankle and the 9-Point Ravens Swing

The Ravens-Falcons line swung about nine points after Lamar Jackson's ankle sprain, from Baltimore -6 on the lookahead to Atlanta -3 or -3.5. That move is close to what the market has historically charged for Baltimore without Jackson, about 8.5 points from 2019 through 2025. Here is what the swing already prices, what it cannot, and where the real risk sits before Sunday night.
The Ravens-Falcons line swung about nine points after Lamar Jackson's ankle sprain against Tennessee, from Baltimore -6 on the DraftKings lookahead to Atlanta favored by 3 or 3.5 for Sunday Night Football. That move is close to what the market has historically charged for Baltimore without Jackson: from 2019 through 2025 the Ravens closed as 5.4-point favorites on average with Jackson and 3.1-point underdogs without Jackson, a gap of about 8.5 points. The Best Bet on Sports has built a verified $367,520+ in profit across all sportsbooks over more than twenty years, and a swing this size is exactly where the question shifts from who wins to whether the price already knows.
Jackson went down on a sack late in the second quarter of Sunday's 24-18 win over the Titans and left the stadium in a walking boot on the left foot. Jackson did not practice Wednesday. Head coach Jesse Minter described the chances of Jackson playing Sunday as an outside chance, and Tyler Huntley took the first-team snaps.
That is the news. The betting question is narrower: is nine points the right size for it?
How Far Did the Ravens-Falcons Line Move?
| Market | Before the injury | After the injury |
|---|---|---|
| Spread | Ravens -6 (DraftKings lookahead) | Falcons -3 to -3.5 |
| Total | 46.5 | 43.5 |
| Moneyline (Thursday) | ā | Ravens +145, Falcons -175 |
The pre-injury and Monday numbers come from Covers' report on October 6. The Thursday moneyline and the 3.5 spread are the consensus figures in the nflverse game file as of Thursday morning, October 8. Lines differ by book, and they will move again when Baltimore releases its final injury designation.
The total dropping three points tells you the market expects a different kind of game, not just a different winner. A Huntley-led offense is expected to run more, throw shorter and score less.
What Has the Market Charged for the Ravens Without Lamar Jackson?
We pulled every Ravens game from 2019 through 2025 in the nflverse game file and split them by starting quarterback, grading each against its closing spread.
| Ravens starting QB, 2019-2025 | Average closing line | Average final margin |
|---|---|---|
| Lamar Jackson (56-50 ATS) | Favored by 5.43 | Won by 8.25 |
| Anyone else (18 starts, including one playoff game) | Underdog by 3.11 | Lost by 3.00 |
The gap between those two average lines is about 8.5 points. This week's swing, from -6 to roughly +3.5, is about 9 to 9.5 points. In other words, the market has moved Baltimore by almost exactly what it has historically charged for Jackson's absence, plus a little more.
The second column is the more interesting one. Without Jackson, the Ravens were priced as 3.1-point underdogs and lost by an average of 3.0 points. The market got those games almost exactly right on average. In the 17 regular-season games Jackson missed, Baltimore went 6-11 straight up and 8-8-1 against the spread. That is not a team the market undersold or oversold. It is a team the market priced well.
One caution on that sample. Several of those 17 games were late-season spots where Baltimore rested players or had little at stake, which is a different situation from a 3-1 team on Sunday night in October.
How Has Tyler Huntley Done as the Ravens' Starter?
Huntley has started 12 games for Baltimore in our data, including a 2022 wild-card game. The Ravens went 5-7 straight up and 7-5 against the spread in those starts, with an average final margin of +1.0 points. Huntley completed 8 of 9 passes for 63 yards in relief on Sunday.
Twelve games over five seasons, with different rosters and different coordinators, is too few to treat as a Huntley trend in either direction. What it does show is that Baltimore has not collapsed with Huntley the way a nine-point move might suggest to a casual bettor. The market has generally priced those games close to right.
Does the Market Usually Overreact to Backup Quarterbacks?
Historically, it has done the opposite. Across 918 NFL regular-season starts from 2015 through 2025 by a quarterback who was not the team's most frequent starter that season, those teams went 404-495 against the closing spread, a 44.94 percent cover rate. On average they finished 1.79 points worse than the spread. Teams with their regular starter covered 50.96 percent.
That group is broad. It includes rookies who took over midseason, veterans who were benched and true emergency backups, so it is not a clean estimate for any single team. But the direction is clear. Across the league, the closing price has tended to under-adjust for a quarterback change, not over-adjust.
Put that next to the Ravens-specific numbers and the picture is mixed. League-wide history says backups have been a slightly bad bet even after the line moves. Baltimore's own history says the market has priced its no-Jackson games accurately. Neither says the current number is obviously wrong.
Where Is the Real Risk in This Line?
In the uncertainty, not the size of the move.
Right now the number is pricing a game where Jackson most likely does not play. If Baltimore announces late in the week that Jackson will start, the line will move back toward the Ravens, possibly by most of the nine points. If Jackson is ruled out early, it may settle where it is or drift slightly further.
That makes any bet placed before the status is known a bet on two things at once: the game itself, and the injury decision. A bettor who takes Baltimore +3.5 now is partly betting that Jackson plays. A bettor who lays 3.5 with Atlanta is partly betting that Jackson does not. Neither of those is a football handicap, and the price being offered is a blend of both outcomes.
There is a second, quieter risk. A quarterback who plays on a sprained ankle is not the same player. A healthy Jackson's value comes heavily from running, and a limited Jackson may be priced as the full version once declared active. That is the scenario where the pregame number is most likely to be wrong, and it is invisible until the game starts.
What Should Bettors Watch Before Sunday?
The practice reports Thursday and Friday, the Ravens' final injury designation, and the line reaction to each. A move back toward Baltimore on Friday would tell you the market thinks Jackson is trending toward playing.
We are not offering a side on this game. The data says the current number is in the range the market has historically charged for Jackson's absence, and the deciding information has not been released yet. For our weekly board, see our NFL picks, and for how we approach the primetime slate, see Sunday Night Football picks.
To be precise about that callout: the numbers in this post use closing pregame lines and final scores. They contain no in-game prices, so they cannot measure whether live betting on this game will be easier to beat. That is structural reasoning, not a finding.
What Does This Mean for Your NFL Picks Against the Spread?
Big injury swings are where bettors most often confuse news with value. Everyone knows Jackson is hurt, and the line has already moved nine points to say so. The value, if there is any, comes from knowing something the number does not yet reflect, such as how a backup's skills fit this specific opponent or how a limited star will actually move.
That is the work behind NFL picks against the spread, and it is what to ask of anyone selling expert sports picks on a week like this. Our football handicappers page explains how we handle injury weeks, and our earlier study of how wrong the closing spread actually is shows how much room a single game's number leaves. Frequently Asked Questions
How much did the Ravens-Falcons line move after Lamar Jackson's injury?
About nine points. DraftKings had the Ravens as 6-point favorites on the lookahead line before the injury. By Monday the Falcons were favored by 3, and the consensus line on Thursday, October 8 was Atlanta -3.5. The total dropped from 46.5 to 43.5.
Is Lamar Jackson playing against the Falcons?
As of Wednesday, October 7, Jackson did not practice after an ankle sprain against Tennessee, and head coach Jesse Minter called Jackson's chances of playing an outside chance. Tyler Huntley took the first-team snaps. The final status was not yet announced when this was published.
How much is Lamar Jackson worth to the point spread?
From 2019 through 2025, the Ravens closed as 5.43-point favorites on average in games Jackson started and 3.11-point underdogs in games without Jackson, a gap of about 8.5 points. That is a historical average across different opponents, not a fixed value.
How have the Ravens done without Lamar Jackson?
In 17 regular-season games without Jackson from 2019 through 2025, Baltimore went 6-11 straight up and 8-8-1 against the spread. They lost by an average of 3.0 points while closing as 3.1-point underdogs, so the market priced those games almost exactly right on average.
How has Tyler Huntley done as a starter for the Ravens?
In 12 starts for Baltimore, including one playoff game, the Ravens went 5-7 straight up and 7-5 against the spread with Huntley at quarterback. That is too small a sample to treat as a trend in either direction.
Do teams with backup quarterbacks cover the spread?
Historically, less often than average. From 2015 through 2025, NFL teams starting a quarterback who was not their most frequent starter that season covered 44.94 percent of the time against the closing spread, compared with 50.96 percent for regular starters.
Should you bet the Ravens-Falcons game before Jackson's status is announced?
Betting before the announcement means betting on the injury decision as well as the game. If Jackson is declared active, the line is likely to move back toward Baltimore. If Jackson is ruled out, it may stay near its current number. That uncertainty is built into the price you are offered now.
