Lions-Bills Moved Before the Injury Report Did

The Lions-Bills line moved from Buffalo -3 to -4.5 before Detroit officially ruled out two starting offensive linemen. With its starting center already on injured reserve, Detroit will start three backups up front on Thursday night. One missing lineman barely moves a spread; three at once change what the whole offense can call, and the market priced that before the report was filed.
The Lions-Bills line moved from Buffalo -3 to -4.5 before Detroit had officially ruled anyone out, and the reason sits in a part of the roster most bettors skip: the offensive line. On Wednesday the Lions ruled out rookie right tackle Blake Miller and left guard Christian Mahogany, and starting center Cade Mays was already on injured reserve. Detroit will start backups at three of its five line spots on Thursday night. The Best Bet on Sports has bet NFL games live for more than twenty years, with $367,520+ in verified profit across all sportsbooks, and a line that moves before the news is official is a line worth reading carefully.
One betting preview published Wednesday called the move "extremely significant, especially when there isn't a major injury for either team." That sentence is the whole story in miniature. No star is out. Jared Goff, Jahmyr Gibbs and Amon-Ra St. Brown are all playing. By the usual headline standard, nothing major happened.
The market disagreed, and it disagreed early.
How Far Did the Lions-Bills Line Move, and When?
Here is the sequence, pieced together from dated reports. Prices differ by sportsbook and by hour, so read it as a path, not a single tape.
| When | Source | Spread | Total | Moneyline |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Monday, Sept. 14 | SI, DraftKings prices | Bills -3 (-115) | 52.5 | Bills -166 / Lions +140 |
| Tuesday, Sept. 15, 4:31 p.m. ET | ESPN | Bills -3.5 | 53.5 | ā |
| Tuesday, Sept. 15, 10:31 p.m. ET | Covers | Bills -4.5 | 53.5 | ā |
| Wednesday, Sept. 16 | SI, DraftKings | Bills -5.5 (-105) | 54.5 | ā |
| Wednesday, Sept. 16, 5:50 p.m. ET | CBS Sports | Bills -4.5 | 54.5 | Bills -231 / Lions +190 |
Two things stand out.
First, the spread went through 3, the most important number in football, and kept going. A move from -3 to -3.5 is a half-point. A move from -3 to -4.5 changes who wins the bet on every three-point and four-point Buffalo win. Books do not push a number across 3 casually.
Second, the timing. The spread reached -4.5 by Tuesday night. The Lions did not rule out Miller and Mahogany until Wednesday, and CBS Sports published the final report at 8:17 p.m. ET that night. The market was not reacting to an announcement. It was pricing the likely outcome of one.
Convert the moneylines and strip out the sportsbook's margin, and Buffalo's implied win probability went from about 60% on Monday to about 67% by Wednesday evening. Seven points of win probability is a big move for a game where no starting quarterback, running back or receiver changed status.
Why Did the Line Move Before the Lions Ruled Anyone Out?
Because most of the information was already public. It just was not labeled "out" yet.
- Cade Mays broke his wrist before the season and is on injured reserve. That was known going into Week 1.
- Christian Mahogany hurt his hip on a first-quarter run play in the opener against New Orleans. Ben Bartch played 66 snaps at left guard in his place. Anyone who watched the game knew Mahogany was hurt.
- Blake Miller, Detroit's first-round pick, played all 77 offensive snaps in Week 1 and reported knee discomfort afterward. The Detroit News ran a story on Monday headlined that his status was "in jeopardy" for the Buffalo game.
Add the calendar. The Lions played an overtime game on Sunday, a 31-30 win over the Saints, and then had to travel to Orchard Park for a Thursday kickoff. One Lions analyst argued this week that if the game were on Sunday, Miller would probably have been listed as questionable by Friday and played. A short week turns "probably plays" into "probably sits," and bettors who follow the team closely could see that coming by Monday afternoon.
So the market was not early. The official report was late, by design. For a Thursday game, final designations come out Wednesday. The information that mattered was on the field Sunday and in the local papers Monday.
One Missing Lineman vs. Three: Why This Moved the Number
We wrote in August about Laremy Tunsil's injury that losing one offensive lineman changes very little about a team's average result and a lot about the shape of its bad games. That is why season-long numbers barely moved when Washington lost its left tackle.
That logic breaks down when the losses stack up, and the reason is practical rather than statistical.
| Position | Week 1 starter | Thursday starter | Background |
|---|---|---|---|
| Center | Juice Scruggs (Mays on IR) | Juice Scruggs | Second start of the season; listed as limited in practice |
| Left guard | Christian Mahogany | Ben Bartch | Played 66 snaps in the opener after Mahogany's injury |
| Right tackle | Blake Miller | Larry Borom | Started 11 games at right tackle for Miami last season |
A single backup can be hidden. Coaches slide a tight end to his side, give him a running back to chip, and keep calling most of the offense. Three backups on one line cannot all be protected at once. The center makes the protection calls. The guard and the tackle on opposite sides mean there is no longer a clean strong side to run behind or protect toward. The things coaches normally use to cover one weak spot start competing with each other.
The result is usually a smaller playbook, not a collapse. Fewer long developing passes, more quick throws, more help assignments that take a receiver or tight end out of the route. A smaller playbook lowers a team's average output, and averages are what spreads and totals are built to price. That is the difference between one missing lineman and three.
Why Did the Total Go Up Instead of Down?
If Detroit's offense is compromised, you might expect the total to fall. It rose from 52.5 toward 54.5 at several books, and CBS Sports reported a move from 53.5 to 54.5 over the same stretch. Three reasons fit that.
Buffalo's offense looked excellent. Josh Allen completed 20 of 29 passes for 334 yards and two touchdowns in the 36-31 win over Houston, and ran for two more scores. Covers credited Buffalo with 7.9 yards per play. Dalton Kincaid caught five passes for 130 yards.
Detroit's secondary is thin too. Safeties Brian Branch (Achilles) and Kerby Joseph (knee) opened the season on the physically unable to perform list, and cornerback D.J. Reed is questionable with a foot injury after limited practices Tuesday and Wednesday. Chris Olave caught passes for nearly 200 yards against this defense in Week 1.
Detroit can still score in ways that do not need five healthy linemen. Gibbs ran 29 times for 156 yards and two touchdowns against New Orleans. A team that has to shorten its passing game can still move the ball on the ground and on quick throws, especially against a defense that just allowed 31 points.
Read together, the market seems to be saying Buffalo scores more, Detroit scores a little less than it otherwise would, and the combination still lands higher. That is consistent with a spread that grew and a total that rose at the same time.
What About the Betting Splits?
This is where caution matters. Two published sources describe the betting on this game in ways that cannot both be the full picture.
According to DraftKings figures cited by SI on Wednesday, 64% of spread bets and 80% of moneyline bets were on Buffalo. TheSpread.com reported that roughly 74% of spread tickets were on Detroit, and read the move toward Buffalo as a sign of bigger money on the other side.
Those are different books, different moments and possibly different definitions of a ticket. We are not going to pick the one that makes a better story. The honest conclusion is that nobody outside a sportsbook has a clean view of who bet this game, and the injury timeline explains the move without needing a sharp-money narrative. We made a similar point after Chiefs-Broncos in Week 1: a split percentage is a clue, not a verdict.
Is Bills -4.5 a Good Bet Now?
We do not publish a pregame side on this game, and here is why.
The value in this situation belonged to people who read the Sunday game film and the Monday reports and bet Buffalo -3 before the number moved. That price is gone. At -4.5 or -5.5 you are paying for information the market already has, and you are laying points on the far side of the key number of 3. If you like Buffalo now, shop for -4 or better, because the gap between -4.5 and -5.5 is a whole point you would be giving up. Our guide to alternate lines and buying points explains how much those half-points are worth near 3 and 7.
If you like Detroit, understand what you are betting on: that three backups hold up better than the market expects, on a short week, on the road, four days after an overtime game.
How to Watch Lions-Bills Live
A line built on an injury assumption gets tested within a few possessions, which is why this game suits in-game betting better than a pregame ticket.
Watch Detroit's first two drives for play type, not points. If Goff is getting the ball out on quick throws and screens, the coaches have shrunk the playbook to protect the line. That is expected. If Detroit is calling deep dropbacks and holding up, the line is performing above its price.
Watch Gibbs's runs to the left side. Bartch at left guard and the protection calls from Scruggs at center will show up first in the running game. Success there keeps the Lions on schedule and makes the higher total look right.
Watch Buffalo's pass rush on third down. A backup right tackle on third-and-long on the road is the matchup the market is betting on. If Detroit keeps avoiding third-and-long, the pregame assumption is being tested in its favor.
Do not overreact to the first score. Live lines move on points, and the first touchdown in a game with a 54-point total tells you very little. The first two or three possessions tell you whether the injury story is true.

What This Does Not Tell You
It does not tell you Detroit loses. A 4.5-point underdog wins outright a meaningful share of the time, and the Lions led New Orleans 21-0 midway through the third quarter on Sunday before the game got away from them.
It does not tell you the backups are bad. Borom started 11 games at right tackle for Miami last season, and Bartch played most of Week 1. The market is pricing uncertainty and a smaller playbook, not a disaster.
And it does not tell you the move is over. Thursday-night numbers can shift again on game day as money comes in and as the inactive list is confirmed 90 minutes before kickoff.

Frequently Asked Questions
Who is favored in Lions vs. Bills?
Buffalo is favored. The Bills opened as 3-point home favorites with a total of 52.5, and by Wednesday evening most books had them at -4.5, with at least one DraftKings listing at -5.5 earlier that day. CBS Sports listed the moneyline at Bills -231 and Lions +190 on Wednesday, which implies roughly a 67% chance of a Buffalo win after removing the sportsbook's margin.
Why did the Lions-Bills line move toward Buffalo?
The most likely explanation is Detroit's offensive line. Center Cade Mays was already on injured reserve, left guard Christian Mahogany hurt his hip in Week 1, and rookie right tackle Blake Miller's knee put his status in doubt by Monday. Both were ruled out Wednesday. The spread reached -4.5 on Tuesday, before that announcement, because the injuries were already visible in game film and local reporting.
Which Lions offensive linemen are out against the Bills?
Right tackle Blake Miller (knee) and left guard Christian Mahogany (hip) were ruled out, and center Cade Mays is on injured reserve with a broken wrist. Juice Scruggs starts at center, Ben Bartch at left guard and Larry Borom at right tackle. Borom started 11 games at right tackle for the Dolphins last season, and Bartch played 66 snaps in the opener.
Do offensive line injuries affect point spreads?
One missing lineman usually moves a spread very little, because coaches can protect a single weak spot with tight end help and play calling. Several missing linemen at once are different, because those protections compete with each other and the playbook shrinks. A smaller playbook lowers a team's average output, which is exactly what spreads and totals are built to price.
Why did the total go up if Detroit's offense is hurt?
Because the rest of the matchup points toward scoring. Josh Allen threw for 334 yards and ran for two touchdowns against Houston, Buffalo averaged 7.9 yards per play, and Detroit's secondary is missing safeties Brian Branch and Kerby Joseph with cornerback D.J. Reed questionable. Detroit can also still run the ball, as Jahmyr Gibbs's 156 rushing yards in Week 1 showed.
What time is Lions vs. Bills on Thursday Night Football?
The game kicks off Thursday, Sept. 17, at 8:15 p.m. ET at Highmark Stadium in Orchard Park, New York, and streams on Prime Video. Both teams are 1-0: Buffalo beat Houston 36-31 and Detroit beat New Orleans 31-30 in overtime.
Is it better to bet Lions-Bills before the game or live?
In a game where the line moved on an injury assumption, live betting lets you see whether the assumption is true before committing. The first two or three Detroit possessions will show whether the coaches have shortened the passing game to protect the line and whether the backups are holding up. Pregame, the value in this number belonged to bettors who acted on Monday.
