Lamar Jackson Thumb: Ravens Line Swing

Lamar Jackson's right thumb surgery moved the Ravens from a 3-point home favorite to an 8.5-point home underdog against Jacksonville on Thursday, an 11.5-point swing at DraftKings, with the total down from 48.5 to 43.5. Since 2002, quarterbacks making their first career start as home underdogs of 7 or more went 22-12 against the spread, a small 34-game sample.
Lamar Jackson's right thumb injury moved the Ravens from a 3-point home favorite to an 8.5-point home underdog against Jacksonville for Thursday Night Football, an 11.5-point swing at DraftKings, while the total fell from 48.5 to 43.5. Jackson will have surgery and go on injured reserve, backup Tyler Huntley is unlikely to play with turf toe, and undrafted rookie Joe Fagnano is the likely starter. Since 2002, quarterbacks making their first career start as home underdogs of 7 or more went 22-12 against the spread. The Best Bet on Sports has built a verified $367,520+ in profit across all sportsbooks over more than twenty years by pricing quarterback changes like this one.
This is the second time this season Baltimore's season has been repriced around Jackson's health. In October, his ankle injury moved the Ravens-Falcons line by nine points. This one is bigger, because there's no healthy veteran behind him.
What Happened to Lamar Jackson?
Jackson returned from the ankle injury that cost him three starts and hurt his right thumb on his first snap back, in Sunday's 36-10 loss at Buffalo. Head coach Jesse Minter said Jackson will go on injured reserve and have surgery, and he said the injury could potentially end Jackson's season. Injured reserve means at least four games out, so the shortest possible absence runs past the November 10 trade deadline and most of the month.
It got worse from there. Huntley, who started the three games Jackson missed in October, left Buffalo with turf toe and is unlikely to play Thursday. Fagnano, an undrafted rookie, made his NFL debut in relief and went 10-of-21 for 91 yards with an interception and a lost fumble. He's dealing with an ankle injury of his own, though Minter said he has a chance to be ready. Baltimore signed Austin Reed to the practice squad for depth.
The Ravens are 4-4. They went 3-1 in the four games Jackson started and finished, and 1-2 with Huntley.
How Far Did the Ravens-Jaguars Line Move?
Further than it did after his ankle injury in October.
| Market | Before the injury | After (DraftKings, Nov. 2) |
|---|---|---|
| Spread | Ravens -3 | Jaguars -8.5 |
| Total | 48.5 | 43.5 |
| Moneyline | Ravens favored | Jaguars -426, Ravens +330 |
That's an 11.5-point move on the spread. Prediction markets went further: on Kalshi, Jacksonville was trading at -9.5 with a 42.5 total, and the Jaguars at 79 percent to win, as of Monday afternoon. When different venues disagree by a full point on a number this large, it usually means the market doesn't know yet who is starting.
The total moved five points, which is unusual. Spread moves after a quarterback injury are common. Totals usually move a point or two. A five-point drop says the market expects a Ravens offense that can't sustain drives, and that it doesn't expect Jacksonville to run up the score in a short-week road game.
How Good Is Jacksonville?
Good enough that the line isn't all about Baltimore. The Jaguars are 5-2 and 4-3 against the spread, with wins over Cleveland, New England, Cincinnati, Philadelphia, and Indianapolis. They beat the Colts 42-7 on Sunday as 10-point favorites. Covers reports Jacksonville is 14-2 straight up and 12-3-1 against the spread in its last 16 games as a favorite.
Baltimore, meanwhile, is 0-3 against the spread at home this season. The Ravens lost to New Orleans as 8.5-point favorites, beat Tennessee by only six as 11.5-point favorites, and lost to Cincinnati by 22 as 3-point underdogs. Covers also has them 0-4-1 against the spread in their last five as a home underdog.
Both teams are on a short week, since both played Sunday. The difference is what each team is carrying into Thursday. Jacksonville is coming off a 35-point win with its starter healthy. Baltimore is coming off a 26-point loss, with a quarterback room that may not get a full practice together before kickoff.
How Do First-Career-Start Quarterbacks Do Against the Spread?
If Fagnano starts, it will be his first career start, and that's a situation we can test. We used the nflverse games file and found the first regular-season game each quarterback appeared as his team's starter, from 2002 through 2025. We started in 2002 so that veterans whose careers began before the data, which starts in 1999, wouldn't be miscounted as first-timers.
| First career start | Games | ATS record | Cover rate | Won the game |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| All | 256 | 126-130 | 49.22% | 30.27% |
| As a favorite or pick'em | 48 | 20-28 | 41.67% | 54.17% |
| As an underdog under 7 | 110 | 52-58 | 47.27% | 36.04% |
| As an underdog of 7 or more | 98 | 54-44 | 55.10% | 12.75% |
| As a home underdog of 7 or more | 34 | 22-12 | 64.71% | 22.86% |
Overall, the market prices first starts about right: 49.22 percent covers across 256 games. But the split is worth noticing. When the line moves a lot, first-time starters have covered more often than not, and as home underdogs of 7 or more they went 22-12.
Two cautions. First, 34 games is a small sample. A 22-12 record would happen by chance fairly often, roughly one time in eight, so it is a lean, not a rule. Second, most of the effect is the home underdog itself. Every home underdog of 7 or more from 2002 through 2025 went 247-205 against the spread, 54.65 percent, without regard to the quarterback. The first start adds a little on top, and in a small sample.
There's also a split worth pairing with it. Our earlier study of rookie quarterbacks against the spread found that rookies as a group don't beat the number over a full season. The first start is when the market knows the least about a quarterback, and the price moves the most. After a few starts, the market catches up: quarterbacks in their second through fourth starts covered 51.73 percent of 663 games.
What Does the Ravens Line Mean for Bettors?
It means the market has already done most of the work. An 11.5-point swing is big, but so is the drop from Jackson to an undrafted rookie with one turnover-filled appearance. The question isn't whether Baltimore is worse. It's whether 8.5 or 9.5 points is too much, and the history above says big home underdogs with a new quarterback have covered slightly more often than not.
Watch the starter announcement. If Huntley is cleared, the line should come back toward Baltimore, possibly by a point or more. If Fagnano is ruled out too and Reed or another emergency option starts, it could go the other way.
Watch the trade deadline. The Ravens are reportedly pursuing Chicago's Tyson Bagent, and Arizona's Jacoby Brissett, who was demoted to third string, has been linked to Baltimore. A trade before Thursday is unlikely to produce a starter in three days, but it would change the price for the weeks after. Our trade deadline buyers and sellers guide covers how futures react.
Be careful with the total. A five-point drop puts the total near 43. Short weeks and backup quarterbacks lean under, but that's exactly why the number moved. The value was in the first hour after the news, not now.
Don't chase the moneyline. At +330, Baltimore would need to win about 23 percent of the time to break even. First-time starters as big home underdogs won 22.86 percent in our data, which is right at the price.
What Does This Mean When You Buy NFL Picks?
Big injury news is where a pick service either earns its price or doesn't. Anyone can tell you Baltimore is worse without Jackson. The useful part is knowing what the move should be, and whether the number overshot.
Our NFL picks against the spread and Thursday Night Football picks are built around that question, and every result is posted on our results page. If you're comparing expert sports picks, ask how each service handles a quarterback change before the starter is named. Our football handicappers page explains our process, and our basketball handicappers page shows how we apply the same injury pricing to the NBA, where lines move on lineup news every night.
