NFL Teams That Won While Outgained, Tested

Fading NFL teams that won while being outgained doesn't work against the spread. From 2016 through 2025, teams that won despite being outgained by 100 or more yards went 87-73-7 ATS the next week, a 54.37 percent cover rate. All teams that won while outgained covered 50.40 percent. Final margin also predicted next week's result slightly better than yardage did.
Fading NFL teams that won while being outgained doesn't work against the spread. We tested every regular-season game from 2016 through 2025. Teams that won despite being outgained by 100 or more yards went 87-73-7 against the spread the next week, a 54.37 percent cover rate, the opposite of what the "lucky winner" theory predicts. All teams that won while outgained covered 50.40 percent of the time. And the final score predicted next week's result slightly better than the yardage did. The Best Bet on Sports has built a verified $367,520+ in profit across all sportsbooks over more than twenty years by testing ideas like this before betting them.
This is one of the oldest ideas in football handicapping. A team that wins while getting outgained got lucky, the thinking goes, maybe with turnovers, a return touchdown or a few bounces. The market sees the win, rates the team too high, and the smart money fades it next week. The reverse should work too: back the team that lost despite moving the ball.
It's a good story. Here's what happened when we tested it.
How Did We Test the Lucky-Winner Theory?
We used nflverse play-by-play data for every regular-season game from 2016 through 2025 and counted each team's net yards on running and passing plays, including sacks. That's close to total yards from scrimmage. It leaves out penalty yards and special teams.
Then we joined each game to the closing spread from the nflverse game file and looked at every team's next regular-season game in the same season. That gave us 4,958 team-games with a next-week result. Across all of them, teams covered 49.98 percent of the time, which is what you'd expect from a fair market.
Do NFL Teams That Win While Outgained Cover the Next Week?
They covered at about the normal rate, and the most extreme ones covered more:
| Last game | Next week ATS | Cover rate | Avg vs. spread |
|---|---|---|---|
| Won, outgained by any amount | 379-373-20 | 50.40% | +0.16 pts |
| Won, outgained by 100+ yards | 87-73-7 | 54.37% | +1.21 pts |
| Won, outgained opponent | 829-825-43 | 50.12% | +0.28 pts |
| Won, outgained opponent by 100+ | 389-406-18 | 48.93% | +0.31 pts |
| All teams | 2,416-2,418-124 | 49.98% | 0.00 pts |
If the lucky-winner theory were right, the 100-yard group should be the best fade on the board. Instead, those teams beat the spread by 1.21 points per game. Fading them would have gone 73-87, or 45.63 percent, well short of the 52.38 percent you need to break even at -110.
We wouldn't bet the other way either. With 160 decisions, a 54.37 percent rate has a plausible range of about 46.6 to 62.1 percent. That's consistent with no effect at all. The honest reading is that the angle is dead, not that it's reversed.
What About Teams That Lost While Outgaining Their Opponent?
The reverse angle, backing the "unlucky loser," didn't work either:
| Last game | Next week ATS | Cover rate |
|---|---|---|
| Lost, outgained opponent by any amount | 377-371-24 | 50.40% |
| Lost, outgained opponent by 100+ yards | 75-86-6 | 46.58% |
| Lost, outgained | 817-837-37 | 49.40% |
Teams that lost despite outgaining their opponent by 100 or more yards covered only 46.58 percent of the time the next week. Again, that's within the range of chance, but it's the wrong direction for anyone selling "back the team that moved the ball."
Does Yardage Predict Next Week Better Than the Score?
Not in this data. We measured how well each stat lined up with the following game:
| Last game's stat | Correlation with next week's margin | Correlation with next week's ATS result |
|---|---|---|
| Final score margin | 0.124 | 0.003 |
| Yardage differential | 0.108 | 0.000 |
Both stats tell you a little about how a team will play next week. The final margin tells you slightly more. And neither tells you anything about the spread, because the market already uses both.
That's the real lesson. Yardage is public. Box scores are public. Every book and every bettor who has ever heard of the lucky-winner theory can see that a team got outgained. A signal that obvious gets priced in quickly.
Did the Angle Work in Some Seasons?
It flipped back and forth with no pattern. Here's the year-by-year record for teams that won while being outgained by any amount:
| Season | Next week ATS |
|---|---|
| 2016 | 47-39 |
| 2017 | 29-41 |
| 2018 | 41-35 |
| 2019 | 34-34 |
| 2020 | 44-34 |
| 2021 | 29-44 |
| 2022 | 31-45 |
| 2023 | 39-29 |
| 2024 | 46-31 |
| 2025 | 39-41 |
These teams covered more than half the time in five seasons and less than half in four, with one even. If you'd started fading them after a good year, you'd have been just as likely to hit a bad one. In 2026, through Week 8, they're 15-16-1. Teams that lost while outgaining their opponent are 13-13-5.
Is There Any Version That Works?
We found one cut that looked good, and we don't trust it. Teams that won while being outgained by 100 or more yards and were favored the next week went 44-30-2, or 59.46 percent. When they were underdogs, they went 43-43-5.
Here's why we don't bet that. It's 74 decisions, found by slicing an already small group. The plausible range runs from about 48 to 71 percent. And we found it by looking for something that worked after the main idea failed. That's the most common way bettors end up with a "system" that stops working the moment they use real money on it.
Which Teams Fit This Week?
Three teams won in Week 8 while getting outgained:
| Team | Week 8 result | Yards | Week 9 game |
|---|---|---|---|
| Raiders | Won 38-33 at Jets | Outgained 439-335 | at 49ers, listed SF -10 |
| Broncos | Won 28-24 vs. Chiefs | Outgained 399-297 | at Panthers, listed DEN -2.5 |
| Rams | Won 24-9 vs. Chargers | Outgained 295-281 | at Commanders, listed LA -4.5 |
The Week 9 lines are from the nflverse game file as of Friday and may have moved. The Raiders and Broncos were both outgained by more than 100 yards. Denver is favored next week, which puts the Broncos in the small 44-30-2 group above. We're not betting it for the reasons we explained.
On the other side, the Jets and Chiefs both lost Week 8 games in which they gained 100 or more yards more than their opponent. That's the 75-86-6 group. It's not a reason to fade them. It's a reason not to back them because of the box score.
What Should You Expect From NFL Expert Picks?
You should expect them to be tested. The lucky-winner idea is popular because it sounds smart and it's easy to explain. That's also why the market prices it. Any service selling it as an edge should show you the record across every season, not just the years it worked.
Good nfl picks against the spread come from information the market hasn't fully priced yet, not from stats every bettor can see in the box score. Our football handicappers page explains how we work, and our NFL picks page has the weekly card. For the side-by-side of what a paid service should deliver, see our sports handicapping service page, and our expert sports picks page explains how we evaluate our own record.
We've tested several similar ideas, with similar results. Teams after a turnover disaster and teams in look-ahead spots both came out close to a coin flip once you check the full sample.
Basketball bettors can find the same approach on our basketball handicappers page.
Where This Analysis Stops
We used scrimmage yards, not efficiency stats like yards per play or success rate, which some bettors prefer. A per-play measure might produce a different result, although it's just as public. We studied only the next game, not the rest of the season. We used closing spreads, so we can't say whether an early number was beatable before the market adjusted. And all the subgroup results have wide ranges. None of them should be bet on its own.

Frequently Asked Questions
Should you fade NFL teams that won while being outgained?
No. From 2016 through 2025, teams that won while being outgained covered the next week 50.40 percent of the time. Teams outgained by 100 or more yards in a win covered 54.37 percent, going 87-73-7. Fading them would have lost money.
Do NFL teams that lose but outgain their opponent cover the next week?
Not reliably. Teams that lost while outgaining their opponent covered 50.40 percent of the time the next week. When they outgained their opponent by 100 or more yards, they went 75-86-6 against the spread, a 46.58 percent cover rate.
Is yardage a better predictor than the final score in the NFL?
Not in this data. The final score margin correlated slightly more with the next week's margin, 0.124 compared with 0.108 for yardage. Neither one correlated with the next week's result against the spread, because the market already prices both.
Why doesn't the lucky-winner angle work against the spread?
Because it's public. Every bettor and every sportsbook can see a box score. When a team wins while getting outgained, the market already knows, and the next week's line reflects it. A stat that obvious can't stay mispriced for long.
Which NFL teams won while being outgained in Week 8 of 2026?
The Raiders beat the Jets 38-33 while being outgained 439-335, the Broncos beat the Chiefs 28-24 while being outgained 399-297, and the Rams beat the Chargers 24-9 while being outgained 295-281.
Did the outgained-winner angle work in any season?
It went back and forth. Teams that won while outgained covered more than half the time in five seasons from 2016 to 2025, less than half in four and exactly half in one. In 2026 through Week 8 they are 15-16-1.
What should I look for in NFL expert picks?
Ask how an angle has performed across every season, not just the good ones, and whether it relies on information the market already sees. Popular theories like fading lucky winners usually get priced in. A real edge comes from information the market hasn't caught up to yet.
