Clippers Lose Ingram and Strus: The 30.5 Problem

The Clippers' 30.5 win total was set before the injury news. Brandon Ingram will miss the start of the season after surgery revealed a partially torn Achilles, and Max Strus is out at least four weeks with a partial plantar fascia tear suffered in Sunday's preseason opener. For bettors, the season-long number moves slowly, while the nightly game lines from the October 21 opener onward will price each absence game by game.
The Clippers' 30.5 win total was set before the injury news, and two pieces of it are now sidelined. Brandon Ingram will miss the start of the season after heel surgery revealed a partially torn Achilles tendon, and Max Strus is out at least four weeks with a partial tear of the plantar fascia in his right foot from Sunday's preseason opener. The Best Bet on Sports has spent more than twenty years, and a verified $367,520+ in profit across all sportsbooks, learning how markets absorb news like this: the futures number moves slowly, while the nightly game lines price each absence right away.
The Clippers had already been rebuilt once this year. This week the team that was supposed to replace the old one started losing pieces too.
What Happened to the Clippers This Week?
Two injuries, eight days apart, both to players the front office acquired this offseason to absorb the loss of Kawhi Leonard.
Brandon Ingram. At the Clippers' media day at the end of September, interim president of basketball operations Trent Redden said Ingram had undergone heel surgery in May that also addressed a partially torn Achilles tendon. Redden's words, per NBA.com: "He won't be ready for the start of the season, and we'll reevaluate when we get there." There is no timetable. Reports note that a partial tear carries roughly six fewer months of rehabilitation than a complete one, which is good news for Ingram's career and very little help for the Clippers' October. Ingram arrived from Toronto in the Leonard trade after averaging 21.5 points, 5.6 rebounds and 3.7 assists last season, and he missed the Raptors' final two first-round playoff games with the heel injury.
Max Strus. In Sunday's preseason opener against Golden State in Hawaii, a 104-101 Clippers win, Strus pulled up on a non-contact play about five minutes in and left the game. Monday's diagnosis was a partial tear of the plantar fascia in his right foot, with a re-evaluation in four weeks. That rules him out for the rest of the preseason and at least the start of the regular season, which opens October 21 at home against Sacramento. Strus came over from Cleveland in an August trade, is in the final year of his contract, and appeared in only 12 games last season after missing months with a broken left foot.
The rest of camp has not been clean either. Bradley Beal opened camp unavailable with right knee inflammation, and Jordan Miller is recovering from rotator cuff surgery.
What Was the Clippers' Win Total Before the News?
Thirty and a half.
| Market | Number | When it was quoted |
|---|---|---|
| BetMGM season win total | 30.5 (over -105 / under -115) | Odds as of August 23, per Sports Betting Dime's tracker |
| BetMGM win-total preview | 30.5 | Published September 23 |
| Kalshi, 30 or more wins | 55 cents | September 25, per OddsShopper |
| 2025-26 result | 42 wins against a 49.5 total | Final |
Every one of those numbers predates Ingram's diagnosis becoming public and Strus's injury. We looked for a repriced Clippers total from a named sportsbook dated after Monday and could not find one published. We are not going to invent a number to fill that gap. If a book has moved, it has not said so anywhere we can cite, and the honest statement is that the publicly quoted market is still the pre-injury one.
That gap is the whole story for bettors.
Why Do Season Totals Move Slowly on News Like This?
Because the win total is pricing 82 games, and both injuries are open-ended.
When a starter is ruled out of a single game, the nightly spread absorbs it immediately. Everyone knows the player is not playing, and the number moves to reflect the replacement. A season win total cannot do that cleanly. It has to estimate how many games each player misses, how well the team plays without him, and how much he gives back when he returns, and right now none of those three is known. Ingram has no timetable. Strus has a re-evaluation date, not a return date, and a recent history of foot injuries that makes the optimistic version of that date hard to lean on.
Books are also managing exposure in a market that does not trade much. A season total on a projected lottery team takes a fraction of the money that a nightly NBA spread does, so it can sit at a stale number for days without costing anyone much. That is a structural feature of futures markets, not carelessness.
It is also why we were careful about this number in July. When Leonard was traded, our Kawhi Leonard trade breakdown argued that Ingram's scoring and the added depth should soften the Clippers' drop. That argument rested on Ingram playing. It now has to be re-run without him for an unknown stretch.
How Will the Nightly Lines Treat the Clippers?
Directly, and from night one.
From the October 21 opener against Sacramento, every Clippers spread and total will be set with Ingram and Strus listed out. That makes the nightly market the more current of the two, and the place where this news is actually priced. Three things matter more than the headline in that market.
Who absorbs the minutes. Losing two wings at once does not mean losing two players' worth of production. It means somebody further down the rotation plays 25 more minutes a night than planned, and the quality of that player is what moves the number. Preseason minutes are the best early read on who that is, which is why early-season lines lean so heavily on the final two weeks of camp.
Early-season sample sizes. The first two to three weeks of an NBA season are when team ratings are least stable. Ten games of data is not enough to separate a bad team from a team that has been unlucky, and a roster missing its projected second scorer is especially hard to rate. Markets compensate by leaning on preseason priors longer than they would like to.
Schedule spots. Thin rosters show it most on the second night of a back-to-back, which is where tired legs and a short rotation meet. Our NBA back-to-back betting guide covers how that spot gets priced.
Is the Clippers Under Now a Good Bet?
We are not going to give you a side on a season total from a press release, and you should be wary of anyone who does this week.
The case for the under is obvious and already public: two acquired rotation players out, no timetable on the more important one, and a team that went under its total by seven and a half games last season. BetMGM's own preview leaned under before any of this. The case against piling in is less obvious. The number was already set for a rebuilding team, the injuries are partial tears rather than season-ending ones, and OddsShopper's September 25 analysis argued the franchise has limited incentive to tank because of how its draft pick obligations to Oklahoma City are structured. A win total on a team with little reason to lose on purpose is not the same as one on a team that is openly rebuilding for draft position.
What can be said with confidence is narrower. Anyone betting the 30.5 today is betting a number set before the news, and should only do it at a book that has demonstrably not moved. Anyone who wants exposure to the Clippers' early weakness without locking money up until April has a more current option in the nightly lines.
That is the general rule our basketball handicappers work from in October: the news is priced faster in single-game markets than in futures, and the single-game market is where the information shows up first. For how we approach the NBA more broadly, the NBA handicappers page sets out the method, the basketball handicapping page covers how we rate rosters before the data stabilizes, and the nightly board lives on NBA picks.
What Should Clippers Bettors Watch Next?
Four dates and one question.
The remaining preseason games, for who is actually playing Strus's minutes. The October 21 opener against Sacramento, the first priced game with both absences baked in. Strus's re-evaluation, which lands four weeks after Monday's diagnosis, around the start of November. And any update on Ingram, where the absence of a timetable means even a vague one would move the futures market more than the nightly lines.
The question is whether a named book reposts the Clippers total. When it does, the size of the move is the market's estimate of what these two injuries are worth in wins, and it will be a more honest number than any projection written before it, including ours.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is Brandon Ingram's injury?
Ingram had heel surgery in May that also addressed a partially torn Achilles tendon, which the Clippers disclosed at media day at the end of September. The team said he will not be ready for the start of the season and gave no timetable. A partial tear carries roughly six fewer months of rehabilitation than a complete Achilles rupture.
How long is Max Strus out?
At least four weeks. Strus suffered a partial tear of the plantar fascia in his right foot about five minutes into the Clippers' preseason opener against Golden State in Hawaii, and will be re-evaluated in four weeks. That rules him out for the rest of the preseason and at least the start of the regular season.
What is the Clippers' 2026-27 win total?
The publicly quoted number is 30.5, listed by BetMGM since August, and Kalshi priced 30 or more wins at 55 cents on September 25. All of those quotes predate the Ingram and Strus news. We could not find a repriced total from a named sportsbook published after Monday's Strus diagnosis.
Why hasn't the Clippers' win total moved yet?
Season totals price all 82 games, and both injuries are open-ended, so books have to estimate games missed and replacement quality before moving. Futures markets also take far less money than nightly lines, which lets a number sit longer. Nightly spreads have no such problem and will price both absences from the October 21 opener.
Should I bet the Clippers under?
We do not take a side on a season total off injury news. The under case is public, but the number was already set low for a rebuilding team, both injuries are partial tears, and the team has limited incentive to lose deliberately. Anyone betting it should do so only at a book that has demonstrably not adjusted.
When do the Clippers open the regular season?
October 21, at home against the Sacramento Kings. That is the first game whose spread and total will be set with both Ingram and Strus listed out, and the clearest early read on how the market rates the thinned rotation.
How do injuries affect NBA betting lines early in the season?
Single-game lines adjust immediately to who is in and out, but early-season team ratings rest on very little data, so markets lean on preseason priors longer than usual. The biggest effect usually comes from who absorbs the missing minutes, not from the headline name, and it shows most in bench-heavy stretches and on back-to-backs.
