Ja Morant's Hamstring: What Portland's Line Says

Ja Morant's Grade 2 hamstring strain moved Portland's line only half a point. The Trail Blazers opened -6.5 at Utah for Saturday and sat at -6 by game morning, with 83 percent of spread tickets on Portland. Morant will be re-evaluated in four weeks, and the average Grade 2 hamstring absence in the NBA runs about 35 days, or roughly 18 games.

Ja Morant's Grade 2 left hamstring strain has moved Portland's betting line by half a point. The Trail Blazers opened as 6.5-point favorites at Utah for Saturday afternoon and were listed at -6 (-115) by game morning, with the total sliding from 232.5 to 232. Even after the injury news, 83 percent of spread tickets were on Portland. Morant will be re-evaluated in four weeks, and the average Grade 2 hamstring absence in the NBA is about 35 days. The Best Bet on Sports has built a verified $367,520+ in profit across all sportsbooks over more than twenty years, much of it by reading how lines react to injury news before and during games.

Morant came to Portland this summer in the biggest trade of the offseason, a deal we broke down when Ja Morant was traded to the Blazers. Four games into the partnership with Damian Lillard, Morant is out until at least late November, and the market barely flinched. That small move is the story, and it tells you more about how books priced Morant than about how Portland will play without Morant.

What Is Ja Morant's Injury?

Morant left Thursday's 124-103 home loss to Memphis, his first game against his former team, with 7:46 left in the fourth quarter. Coach Micah Nori said afterward that Morant told the staff he felt a "twinge" in the hamstring. Imaging on Friday showed a Grade 2 strain of the left hamstring, and the team said Morant will be re-evaluated in four weeks.

The re-evaluation is not a return date. Hoops Rumors cited injury analyst Jeff Stotts of In Street Clothes, who puts the average time lost for an NBA player with a Grade 2 hamstring strain at 34.7 days. ESPN counted at least the next 15 games for Portland. At a five-week absence, Hoops Rumors counted 18 games, with a return in early December.

Morant's injury history matters here. Morant played 79 total games across the final three seasons in Memphis and only 20 last season after an elbow sprain. Hamstrings are also among the injuries most likely to recur when a player returns too soon. Plan for the long end of the range, not the short end.

How Much Did the Line Move?

Very little. TheSpread's Saturday-morning odds listed Portland -6 (-115) with a -240 moneyline, down from an opening -6.5. The total opened at 232.5 with the over at -115 and dropped to 232 at even juice. Another preview listed Portland -6.5 with a -226 moneyline, so the market was split between 6 and 6.5 on game day.

A half-point move on a player who leaves for a month says one of two things. Either the books already priced Morant as a modest upgrade over the next guard in line, or the market expects the drop-off to show up over several weeks rather than in one game. Both are probably true.

Why Didn't Morant's Absence Move the Number More?

Because the role Morant was playing in Portland was smaller than the name. Through four games, Morant averaged 15.8 points, 5.5 assists and 2.5 rebounds while shooting 54.2 percent from the field, according to ESPN, with a season high of 23 in Tuesday's win over the Lakers. Hoops Rumors put Morant's minutes at 27.0 per game over the first three. That is a productive, efficient guard on a minutes plan, not the 30-points-a-night creator Morant was at peak in Memphis.

Portland also has more guard depth than most teams. Jrue Holiday is the likely starter next to Lillard, Scoot Henderson keeps a bench creation role, and Vit Krejci could see more minutes. Deni Avdija is the team's leading scorer at 22.8 points and 6.5 assists per game, so Portland's offense does not run through any one guard.

The team numbers back that up. Through four games, Portland had the third-best offensive rating in the league at 121.9 and a 113.2 defensive rating, at a pace of 100.7 possessions per 48 minutes. Losing a 27-minute guard from that rotation costs something, but not six points.

What About Shaedon Sharpe?

This is where the injury news compounds. Shaedon Sharpe is out for most of the season after right knee surgery to repair a torn meniscus, so Portland's backcourt is now missing two players from its preseason rotation. Robert Williams III (knee) and Chris Youngblood (ankle) were questionable for Saturday as well.

One absence a team can absorb. Two in the same position group, on the front end of a road trip, is where depth starts to show. Holiday is 36, Lillard is coming back from an Achilles injury, and both will play more minutes over the next month. Watch for rest nights on back-to-backs, because that is when the line has to move more than half a point.

How Does Utah Fit In?

Utah is a soft first test. The Jazz are 1-4 and have lost three straight, all at home. Utah's defensive rating of 118.4 ranks 25th, and the Jazz have allowed 120.2 points per game. Utah is also banged up: Jaren Jackson Jr. (torn MCL) and Jusuf Nurkic (foot) are out, and Lauri Markkanen (wrist) was listed as day-to-day. Keyonte George leads the Jazz at 24.4 points per game.

So the first game without Morant may not tell you much. A win over a depleted 1-4 team will look like proof the Blazers are fine without Morant, and a loss will look like a collapse. Neither is reliable on one game. The stops after Utah, which include Phoenix and Denver, are better tests.

Where Is the Betting Value?

Three places, in order of how much we trust them.

1. Fade the overreaction, either way. After one game without a star, the market tends to overweight the result. If Portland covers easily against Utah, expect the number against Phoenix or Denver to stay tight even though those are much better teams. If Portland loses, expect a bigger adjustment than the injury itself justified. In both cases the second game is the one to price carefully.

2. Player props move before spreads do. Holiday's and Henderson's minutes, assists and points are the markets that should change most, and books often set them off season-to-date averages that include games next to Morant. The first two or three games of a new rotation are when prop numbers lag the most.

3. Totals are the quietest market. Portland's last three games went 248, 265 and 227 combined points, and Utah's four home games produced 239, 255, 215 and 228. The total has moved only half a point. A team that loses a ball-dominant guard can play slower, but Portland's pace comes from Avdija and Lillard as much as Morant, so we would not chase an under on the injury alone.

⚔ The Live Edge: The pregame line priced Morant's absence at half a point. What it cannot price is how Portland's rotation actually looks in the first six minutes: who brings the ball up, whether Holiday is guarding the other team's best scorer, and how Nori staggers Lillard and Henderson. Those answers show up early in the first quarter, and live lines adjust slowly to rotation changes. That gap is where our live betting picks do most of their work, and it is a big part of why we are limited on all six major U.S. sportsbooks.

What Does This Mean for Portland's Season?

The preseason win total was 42.5, a number we called flat for a team adding Lillard and Morant in our breakdown of what Portland's 42.5 assumed. A 3-1 start pushed the Blazers ahead of that pace. Missing Morant for something like 15 to 18 games costs Portland a game or two in expectation, not a season, if Holiday and Lillard hold up.

That second condition is the real risk. Holiday and Lillard are both well into their 30s, and the Blazers are now asking both to absorb more minutes on a road trip. If either misses time while Morant is out, Portland's guard depth goes from strength to problem quickly, and that is the scenario where the Blazers' line moves by points, not halves.

How Should You Bet NBA Injury News?

The pattern here repeats across the league. Early-season injuries to stars on new teams tend to move lines less than bettors expect, because the books had already priced the player's role on the new team, not the reputation. We saw the same pattern this month with Kawhi Leonard's knee in Toronto and Jalen Williams' leg injury in Oklahoma City.

Good basketball handicappers price the replacement player's minutes, not the injured player's name. That is the approach behind our NBA picks and our NBA handicappers page. If you are deciding whether to pay for sports picks this season, ask any service how it priced the first game after a star injury, and check its results on those spots.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long will Ja Morant be out?

At least four weeks. The Trail Blazers announced a Grade 2 left hamstring strain on Oct. 30 and said Morant will be re-evaluated in four weeks. The average time lost for an NBA player with a Grade 2 hamstring strain is 34.7 days, according to Jeff Stotts of In Street Clothes, which would mean about 18 games and a return in early December.

How did Ja Morant get hurt?

Morant left Portland's 124-103 home loss to Memphis on Oct. 29 with 7:46 left in the fourth quarter, after telling coach Micah Nori he felt a twinge in the hamstring. Imaging the next day showed the Grade 2 strain. It was Morant's first game against the Grizzlies since the offseason trade to Portland.

How much did the Blazers' line move after the Morant injury?

Half a point. Portland opened as a 6.5-point favorite at Utah for Oct. 31 and was listed at -6 (-115) by game morning, with a -240 moneyline. The total moved from 232.5 to 232. About 83 percent of spread tickets were on Portland even after the news.

Who replaces Ja Morant in Portland's lineup?

Jrue Holiday is the likely starter alongside Damian Lillard, with Scoot Henderson in a bench creation role and Vit Krejci a candidate for more minutes. Deni Avdija, at 22.8 points and 6.5 assists per game, remains Portland's leading scorer and primary playmaker.

Why didn't Morant's injury move the spread more?

Morant was playing a smaller role than the name suggests: 15.8 points and 5.5 assists per game on a limited minutes plan through four games. Portland also has guard depth in Holiday, Lillard and Henderson, and the third-best offensive rating in the league, so books priced the drop-off as modest.

Should you bet the Blazers without Ja Morant?

Not on the first game alone. The opener at Utah comes against a 1-4 team missing Jaren Jackson Jr. and Jusuf Nurkic, so the result will say little. The more useful spots are the games against Phoenix and Denver, where the market may overreact to whatever happened in Utah.

What is the best way to bet NBA injury news?

Price the replacement, not the injured player. Lines usually move by the gap between the injured player and the next man up, and player props for the replacements tend to lag for the first two or three games. Live markets also adjust slowly to new rotations, which is where in-game betting has an edge.
