Haliburton Returns Tonight: What 44.5 Wins Assumes

Tyrese Haliburton plays tonight for the first time in 472 days, and the betting market has already priced his return. BetMGM lists the Pacers' win total at 44.5, with the over at -125, after a 19-63 season without him. That is a 25.5-win swing built almost entirely on one surgically repaired Achilles. Here is what the number assumes, and why tonight's preseason minutes will not tell you whether it is right.
Tyrese Haliburton plays tonight for the first time in 472 days, and the betting market finished pricing his comeback weeks ago. BetMGM lists the Indiana Pacers' 2026-27 win total at 44.5, with the over at -125 and the under at +105, after a 19-63 season played entirely without him. That is a 25.5-win improvement built mostly on one surgically repaired Achilles tendon, and the -125 means the market leans toward even more. Tonight's preseason game in Ames, Iowa will produce highlights, not information about that number. The Best Bet on Sports has built a verified $367,520+ in profit across all sportsbooks over more than twenty years, and the useful betting information about Haliburton arrives later than tonight.
What Is Happening Tonight?
The Pacers open their preseason schedule against the Minnesota Timberwolves at 7 p.m. Eastern at Hilton Coliseum on the Iowa State campus, where Haliburton played his college basketball. It is his first game against NBA competition since he tore his right Achilles tendon in the first quarter of Game 7 of the 2025 NBA Finals against Oklahoma City. He had surgery the next day and missed the entire 2025-26 season.
At the end of September he told reporters he had no limitations. The Pacers have not announced a minutes plan for tonight, and nothing in this post assumes one.
The return is a good story. For betting purposes, the more important fact is that it was already in the price before the ball goes up.
What Does a 44.5 Win Total Assume?
Almost everything goes right.
| Measure | Number | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| 2025-26 record, without Haliburton | 19-63 | The baseline the market is moving away from |
| 2024-25 record, with Haliburton | 50-32 | Cleared a 46.5 preseason total |
| BetMGM 2026-27 win total | 44.5 | A 25.5-win swing from last season |
| Over / under price | -125 / +105 | No-vig over probability of about 53.3% |
| Bleacher Report projection (Grant Hughes) | 43.5 | One independent estimate a win below the book |
Strip the bookmaker's margin out of -125 and +105 and the over carries roughly a 53 percent probability. The market's center of gravity sits slightly above 44.5 wins, about five wins short of the 50 the Pacers posted in 2024-25 with Haliburton running the offense.
That makes the number a reasonable estimate of a healthy Haliburton, a full season of Ivica Zubac, who arrived from the Clippers at the February trade deadline, and a supporting group of Pascal Siakam, Andrew Nembhard and Aaron Nesmith returning from a lost year. It is a much less obvious estimate of the uncertainty around all of that.
A win total is a single number, but it is really an average over outcomes. A Haliburton who plays 70 games at his old level and a Haliburton who is managed through back-to-backs and plays 55 games are very different teams, and the 44.5 has to sit somewhere between them. The -125 says the market thinks the first version is a little more likely. It does not say the second version has been ruled out.
Why Won't Tonight's Preseason Game Settle Anything?
Because preseason games are built to answer a different question.
Teams use them to manage workloads, test rotations and give minutes to players fighting for the last roster spots. Starters rarely play full stints, scores swing on lineups that will never appear together in October, and results have almost no relationship to regular-season records. A player returning from an Achilles repair is the one the coaching and medical staff will protect most carefully, which makes his preseason minutes a statement about caution rather than a measurement of his health.
So the honest betting read on tonight is limited. If Haliburton plays comfortable minutes and moves the way he did before the injury, that is reassuring, but it is already the assumption built into 44.5. If he looks rusty in a preseason game after sixteen months away, that is also normal, and it should not move a full-season number much either.
The bettor who reacts hardest to tonight is the one most likely to pay a worse price.
Where Does the Real Information Come From?
The regular season, and specifically three things a preseason game cannot show.
The first is availability. The difference between 55 and 70 games played is the biggest single swing inside the Pacers' win total, and it is revealed one schedule decision at a time, especially on the second night of back-to-backs. Our guide to betting NBA back-to-backs covers how those games get priced when a star's status is uncertain until close to tip-off.
The second is how the nightly lines react. Every early-season Pacers spread is the market's current opinion of Haliburton expressed in points. If Indiana is being priced like a 50-win team in its first two weeks while he is visibly limited, that is a gap. If it is being priced like a 40-win team while he looks like himself, that is a gap the other way. Those numbers move far faster than a season win total.
The third is what happens inside the games. Burst off the dribble, willingness to drive into contact and late-game usage are exactly the things that show up during a game, possession by possession, and exactly the things a pregame line has to guess at.
How Should You Bet the Pacers Right Now?
We are not giving a side on the 44.5 in this post, because the evidence that would justify one does not exist yet.
What we would avoid is acting on tonight. A preseason line, a preseason box score or a highlight clip from Ames is the least informative thing that will happen to this team all season, and it is going to generate a lot of confident takes. If you hold a Pacers future already, nothing tonight should change your position. If you are thinking about one, the first two or three weeks of regular-season availability and pricing will tell you more than a month of preseason.
This is also the second time in two weeks that one team's whole outlook has hinged on medical news before a single regular-season game. The Clippers lost Brandon Ingram and Max Strus while every public total predated both injuries, as we covered in the Clippers' 30.5 problem. Indiana is the mirror image: a number that already priced in good news, waiting to find out whether it was right.
That pattern is how good basketball handicapping actually works. The edge is rarely in having an opinion before anyone else. It is in knowing which new information has already been priced, and recognizing the moment the market misjudges the information that has not.
What Should a Basketball Bettor Do With This?
Treat October as a month for watching prices, not making season-long bets on hope.
The NBA season is long enough that availability, rotations and rest decide more games than preseason narratives do. A good starting point is our NBA betting strategy guide, and our NBA picks page carries the nightly board once games count. If you are comparing services before the season opens, our page on basketball handicappers explains what separates a real record from a marketed one, and the NBA handicappers page covers how to evaluate them. The method behind all of it is on basketball handicapping, and every graded result we publish is on the results page.
Where This Analysis Stops
Three limits.
The 44.5 and its prices are from BetMGM's preview published September 23. Win totals at other books may differ by a game or more, and the number may move after tonight. We could not confirm a current figure from a second named sportsbook, so none is quoted here.
The Pacers have not published a minutes plan for tonight, and we have not assumed one.
And this post does not estimate how players recover from Achilles injuries in general. Recoveries vary widely, and any single number offered as a rule for Haliburton would be a guess presented as a fact.

Frequently Asked Questions
When does Tyrese Haliburton return for the Pacers?
Tonight, October 7, in the Pacers' preseason opener against the Minnesota Timberwolves at 7 p.m. Eastern at Hilton Coliseum in Ames, Iowa. It is his first game against NBA competition in 472 days, since he tore his right Achilles tendon in Game 7 of the 2025 NBA Finals.
What is the Pacers' win total for the 2026-27 season?
BetMGM lists the Pacers at 44.5 wins, with the over at -125 and the under at +105, in a preview published September 23. Removing the bookmaker's margin, the over carries roughly a 53 percent probability. Bleacher Report's Grant Hughes projected 43.5 wins.
How many games did the Pacers win without Haliburton?
Nineteen. Indiana finished 19-63 in 2025-26 with Haliburton out for the entire season. The year before, with him healthy, the Pacers went 50-32, cleared a 46.5 preseason win total and reached Game 7 of the NBA Finals.
Does Haliburton's preseason performance matter for betting?
Very little. Preseason minutes are managed for workload and rotation testing, and a player returning from an Achilles repair is the one a team protects most. A strong or rusty showing tonight is consistent with the 44.5 the market already set, so it should not move a full-season bet much in either direction.
Is the Pacers' over 44.5 a good bet?
We are not giving a side. The number assumes a healthy Haliburton and a full season with Ivica Zubac, and the -125 price leans slightly toward the over. The information that would justify a strong opinion, regular-season availability and how nightly lines react to it, does not exist yet.
What matters most for the Pacers' win total?
How many games Haliburton plays. A season of about 70 games at his previous level and a carefully managed season of about 55 games describe very different teams. The 44.5 sits between those outcomes, and the answer will appear one schedule decision at a time, especially on back-to-backs.
How can you bet on a returning NBA star?
Patiently. Nightly spreads in the first weeks of the season are the market's current opinion of the player, and they move much faster than a win total. Live betting goes further, because it prices what the player is actually doing in a given half rather than what the pregame number assumed.
