NFL Wong Teasers, Tested

NFL Wong teasers still beat the math, but only on one side. From 2015 through 2025, six-point teaser legs on underdogs of +1.5 to +2.5 covered 77.1 percent, above the 73.9 percent needed at -120. Favorites of -7.5 to -8.5 covered 72.9 percent, which falls short. Underdog legs in games with totals of 49 or higher also came in below break-even.

NFL Wong teasers still work, but only half of the classic recipe does. From 2015 through 2025, six-point teaser legs on underdogs of +1.5 to +2.5 covered 77.1 percent of the time, comfortably above the 73.9 percent each leg needs at -120. Favorites of -7.5 to -8.5 covered only 72.9 percent, which is below break-even. A two-team teaser built from both kinds of legs would have returned about 5 percent. One built only from favorites would have lost money. The Best Bet on Sports has built a verified $367,520+ in profit across all sportsbooks over more than twenty years by testing betting folklore like this before betting it.

The Wong teaser is the most famous "beat the book" idea in football betting. Take a six-point teaser. Use it to move a favorite of -7.5 to -8.5 down to -1.5 to -2.5, or an underdog of +1.5 to +2.5 up to +7.5 to +8.5. Either way, the leg crosses both 3 and 7, the two numbers NFL games land on most often. Pair two of those legs and you have a bet that was profitable for years.

The idea is now three decades old, and sportsbooks know it well. Many have raised teaser prices or limited them. So the question worth asking in 2026 is whether the edge survived, and if it did, where. We graded every regular-season game from 2000 through 2025 to find out.

What Is a Wong Teaser?

A teaser is a parlay where you get extra points on every leg in exchange for a lower payout. In a standard two-team, six-point NFL teaser, both legs move six points in your favor, and both must cover the new line. The bet is usually priced around -120, and many books now charge more.

A Wong teaser is a teaser restricted to legs that cross both 3 and 7. That gives two eligible groups:

Leg typeOriginal lineTeased lineNumbers crossed
Wong favorite-7.5 to -8.5-1.5 to -2.57 and 3
Wong underdog+1.5 to +2.5+7.5 to +8.53 and 7

The logic is simple. Six points are worth more when they pass through the scores games land on most. Six points that move a line from -10 to -4 cross almost nothing of value. Six points that move +2 to +8 capture every three- and seven-point loss.

How Often Do Wong Teaser Legs Cover?

The break-even math comes first. If a two-team teaser pays -120, the ticket has to win 54.55 percent of the time, which means each leg has to cover about 73.85 percent of the time. At -110 the bar is 72.37 percent per leg. At -130 it is 75.18 percent.

Here is what Wong legs actually did, graded against the closing spread with six points added.

Wong leg, 2015-2025Teased recordCover ratePlausible range
Underdogs +1.5 to +2.5354-105-277.12%73.1-80.7%
Favorites -7.5 to -8.5175-6572.92%67.0-78.1%
All Wong legs529-170-275.68%72.4-78.7%

All Wong legs together covered 75.68 percent, which clears the -120 bar by almost two points. But the two halves are not the same. The underdog legs did all the work. The favorite legs came in below break-even at -120 and barely above it at -110.

One more number explains where the edge comes from. Those same 700 legs covered only 49.86 percent against the original, untouched spread. These are not better teams. The extra points are worth more at these numbers than the price charges for them.

Why Do Wong Favorites Fall Short?

Look at how the losing tickets lost. Of the 65 favorite legs that failed, 61 lost the game outright. Teasing a -7.5 favorite down to -1.5 turns every win by two to seven points into a winner. It does nothing when the favorite simply loses, and favorites of -7.5 to -8.5 lost outright 61 times in 240 games, about one time in four.

Underdog legs fail differently. Of the 105 underdog legs that lost, 103 lost by nine points or more. A short underdog is close to a coin flip to win the game, and six points of cushion turned almost every close loss into a winner on top of that. The underdog side gets the full value of the key numbers. The favorite side carries a built-in risk the extra points cannot touch.

The start of this window also lines up with the 2015 rule change that moved extra-point kicks back to the 15-yard line, which changed how often games land on certain margins. We cannot prove that caused the shift, but it is worth knowing the edge in this study belongs to the modern scoring era.

Did the Wong Edge Change Over Time?

Yes, and that is the most important caution in this article.

Wong legs by eraUnderdog legsFavorite legsAll legs
2000-201471.82%73.13%72.29%
2015-202577.12%72.92%75.68%
2026 through Week 721-5 (80.77%)6-4 (60.00%)27-9 (75.00%)

From 2000 through 2014, Wong legs covered 72.29 percent, below the -120 bar. A bettor playing every Wong teaser in that era at -120 would have lost about 4 percent. The edge in the last eleven seasons is real in the data, but it has not been permanent, and it is concentrated on one side.

Year by year, the combined Wong rate since 2015 ranged from 68.85 percent in 2022 to 84.13 percent in 2016. Seven of the eleven seasons cleared 73.85 percent. A profitable strategy can still lose for a full season.

Which Other Teaser Legs Come Close?

Wong legs are not the only ones in the neighborhood. Here is every common spread band from 2015 through 2025, teased six points.

Original lineTeased recordCover rate
Underdog +1139-52-1372.77%

Favorite -7119-40-474.84%
Favorite -9 to -13.5203-111-464.65%

Two results stand out. Favorites of exactly -7, teased to -1, covered 74.84 percent, but on only 163 games. Underdogs of +3, teased to +9, covered 73.25 percent, just under the -120 bar. Everything else falls well short. Teasing a big underdog from +7.5 to +13.5, a popular move with casual bettors, covered only 63.60 percent. That leg crosses no key numbers at all.

Do Totals, Home Field or Divisions Matter?

The original Wong research favored low-total games, on the theory that fewer points make each point of cushion more valuable. Here is how 2015-2025 splits look.

Wong underdog legsCover rateGames
Total 44 or lower78.16%207
Total 44.5 to 48.578.49%173
Total 49 or higher71.60%81
Home underdog75.23%215
Road underdog78.33%241
Division game78.88%161

High-total underdogs covered 71.60 percent, below break-even. The low- and mid-total groups were nearly identical, so the line that matters is around 49, not 44. Road underdogs did slightly better than home underdogs.

For favorites, home Wong legs covered 69.88 percent and road favorites 79.45 percent, but the road group is only 73 games. We tested more than 15 splits for this article. With that many cuts, a few will look strong by chance, so treat any single split as a lead, not a rule. The split we trust most is the plain one: underdogs, yes; favorites, not reliably.

What Did Real Two-Team Wong Teasers Return?

We also paired every Wong leg with every other Wong leg from a different game in the same week, from 2015 through 2025. That produced 1,275 possible two-team tickets, and 767 of them won, a 60.16 percent hit rate against the 54.55 percent needed at -120.

Those tickets overlap, since one leg can appear in many pairs, so treat the rate as a description rather than an independent sample. The simpler math tells the same story. A leg that covers 75.68 percent produces a two-team ticket that wins about 57.3 percent of the time, which returns roughly 5 percent at -120 and about 1 percent at -130. An underdog-only ticket at 77.12 percent per leg returns about 9 percent at -120. A favorite-only ticket loses about 2.5 percent.

That is why teaser price matters so much. A book charging -130 or worse has taken most of the edge before the game starts. Our earlier comparison of teasers versus parlays covers when each bet makes sense, and the NFL teasers guide covers the mechanics.

⚔ The Live Edge: A pregame teaser locks in six points before anyone knows how the game will be played. Live betting lets you wait. When an underdog's defense is clearly winning the line of scrimmage in the first quarter, the live spread often still prices the pregame view, and you can get a number near +7 without paying teaser juice. That kind of in-game read is what our live betting picks are built on, and it is part of why we are limited on all six major U.S. sportsbooks.

Which Week 8 Games Are Wong-Eligible?

Using early Week 8 lines in the dataset, five games currently qualify:

GameWong legEarly lineTeased
Las Vegas at New York JetsJets (home underdog)+1.5+7.5
Kansas City at DenverBroncos (home underdog)+1.5+7.5
Atlanta at Tampa BayFalcons (road underdog)+2.5+8.5
Indianapolis at JacksonvilleJaguars (home favorite)-7.5-1.5
New England at MiamiPatriots (road favorite)-7.5-1.5

The three underdog legs fit the stronger half of the history, and all three have totals under 49. The two favorite legs fit the weaker half. Lines will move before Sunday, and a half point can take a game in or out of Wong range, so check the number you are actually offered. We are not recommending any of these legs here. This is a list of games that fit the criteria, not a pick.

How Do Football Handicappers Use Teasers?

Good football handicappers treat a teaser as a pricing decision, not a confidence play. The question is never "which two teams do I like most?" It is "where does six points buy the most?" The answer is usually a short underdog in a game with a moderate total, and almost never a big underdog or a heavy favorite outside Wong range.

That is the same discipline behind our football betting picks and our NFL picks against the spread: know the break-even, test the angle, and skip it when the price is wrong. Frequently Asked Questions

Do Wong teasers still work in the NFL?

Partly. From 2015 through 2025, six-point teaser legs on underdogs of +1.5 to +2.5 covered 77.12 percent, above the 73.85 percent each leg needs at -120. Favorites of -7.5 to -8.5 covered 72.92 percent, below break-even. All Wong legs combined covered 75.68 percent, enough for roughly a 5 percent return at -120.

What is the break-even rate for a two-team teaser?

At -120, a two-team teaser must win 54.55 percent of the time, so each leg needs to cover about 73.85 percent. At -110, the per-leg bar is 72.37 percent. At -130, it rises to 75.18 percent. The teaser price your sportsbook charges decides whether a Wong strategy is profitable.

Are Wong teaser favorites or underdogs better?

Underdogs. From 2015 through 2025, Wong underdog legs covered 77.12 percent and favorite legs 72.92 percent. Of the 65 failed favorite legs, 61 lost the game outright, which a teaser cannot protect against. Of the 105 failed underdog legs, 103 lost by nine points or more.

Did Wong teasers always win?

No. From 2000 through 2014, Wong legs covered 72.29 percent, below the -120 break-even, so playing every Wong teaser at that price would have lost about 4 percent. The edge since 2015 came almost entirely from underdog legs, and individual seasons ranged from 68.85 percent to 84.13 percent.

Should you tease big underdogs from +7.5 to +13.5?

The data says no. From 2015 through 2025, underdogs of +7.5 to +8.5 teased six points covered only 63.60 percent, and underdogs of exactly +7 covered 62.58 percent. Those legs cross no key numbers, so the six points buy very little. They fall far below the 73.85 percent needed at -120.

Do totals matter for Wong teasers?

Yes, at the high end. Wong underdog legs in games with totals of 44 or lower covered 78.16 percent, and those with totals from 44.5 to 48.5 covered 78.49 percent. In games with totals of 49 or higher, they covered 71.60 percent, below break-even. The useful cutoff appears to be around 49.

Which Week 8 NFL games are Wong-teaser eligible?

On early lines, the Jets (+1.5 vs. Las Vegas), Broncos (+1.5 vs. Kansas City) and Falcons (+2.5 at Tampa Bay) are Wong underdogs. The Jaguars (-7.5 vs. Indianapolis) and Patriots (-7.5 at Miami) are Wong favorites. Lines will move before kickoff, and this is a list of eligible games, not a recommendation.
