Divisional Underdog Parlays: 11 Years of Real Results

Divisional underdogs are one of the few NFL betting trends that has roughly held up, but a divisional underdog parlay is a different bet. From 2015 through 2025, divisional dogs covered 52.27 percent at real closing prices. A weekly ticket of every divisional dog cashed 18 times in 188 weeks, and two of those hits produced more than the entire profit. Here is the full record.

Divisional underdogs are one of the few popular NFL betting trends that has roughly held up, but a divisional underdog parlay is a very different bet from the trend itself. Across 1,056 NFL divisional games from 2015 through 2025, the underdog covered 540 times and failed 493 times, a 52.27 percent rate that returned +1.27 percent at the actual closing spread prices. A weekly parlay of every divisional underdog on the board cashed 18 times in 188 weeks, and its two biggest hits produced more than its entire profit. The Best Bet on Sports has built a verified $367,520+ in profit across all sportsbooks over more than twenty years, and this is the kind of record we check before anyone calls a trend an edge.

"Take the points in division games" is repeated every autumn, usually with the same explanation: the teams know each other, the talent gap shrinks, the favorite cannot pull away. Our own older post on NFL divisional game betting strategy makes that case.

This is the test. Every number below comes from real games and real closing prices, not from a sample chosen after the fact.

How Did We Test Divisional Underdogs?

We used every NFL regular-season game from 2015 through 2025 in the nflverse game file, which records the closing spread, the spread price on each side, the closing moneylines and a flag for divisional games. Games that closed at a pick'em were dropped, because there is no underdog.

That left 1,056 divisional games and 1,835 non-divisional games. Each underdog was graded against the closing spread at the price actually posted for that side. Where the file had no price, we used -110. Pushes are shown separately and count as no action.

For the parlays, we built a ticket each week from every divisional underdog on the board, removed any leg that pushed, and paid the ticket at the product of the real leg prices. We also drew random two-leg and three-leg tickets from the same weekly pools, fifty per week, to see what a more typical bettor's parlay would have done.

Do Divisional Underdogs Really Cover More Often?

Slightly, yes. That is rarer than it sounds for a trend this well known.

Underdog typeATS recordCover rateReturn at real prices
Divisional underdogs540-493-2352.27%+1.27%
Non-divisional underdogs909-876-5050.92%-1.42%
Divisional road underdogs335-287-1653.86%+4.40%
Divisional home underdogs205-206-749.88%-3.51%

Divisional underdogs beat their non-divisional counterparts by about 1.35 points of cover rate and finished on the right side of breakeven. That is a real number from a large sample.

It is also a thin one. We resampled the 1,056 divisional results 5,000 times to estimate how much luck is in that +1.27 percent. The middle 95 percent of outcomes ran from -4.40 percent to +7.03 percent. A long-run losing result is well inside the range. The honest summary is that divisional dogs have been a slightly better-than-average bet, not a proven one.

The road-versus-home split is the most interesting line in the table. Almost all of the effect came from divisional road underdogs. Divisional home underdogs, the spot most often cited because of the crowd, were a coin flip and a losing bet at real prices.

Does the Spread Size Matter?

It does, and in a direction the familiar story does not predict.

Closing spreadDivisional dogs ATSCover rateNon-divisional dogs cover rate
0.5 to 3190-164-1153.67%49.56%
3.5 to 6.5190-167-153.22%51.52%
7 or more159-162-1149.53%52.31%

The "familiarity closes the talent gap" explanation should work best when the gap is largest. It does the opposite. Big divisional underdogs were the worst group in the table, below their non-divisional equivalents. The divisional edge, such as it is, lived in games that were already close.

The best-looking slice we found was divisional road underdogs getting 6.5 points or fewer: 229-177-6, 56.40 percent. We are showing it precisely because it is the kind of number to distrust. It was found by cutting the data three ways and keeping the best cut, which is how most published trends are made. If you slice any 1,000 games enough times, one slice will look like this.

Has the Trend Held Up Over Time?

Roughly, with ugly seasons inside it.

PeriodDivisional dogs cover rateReturn
2015-201750.18%-1.82%
2018-202152.93%+2.53%
2022-202553.17%+2.33%

Season by season, the range is wide. Divisional underdogs covered 58.7 percent in 2015 and 40.2 percent in 2017, when they went 37-55. Five of the eleven seasons finished below the 52.38 percent needed to profit at -110. A bettor who started on this trend in 2016 would have needed several years of patience before it looked like anything.

What Do Divisional Underdogs Do on the Moneyline?

They win about as often as the price says. In the 1,050 decided divisional games with moneylines, underdogs won 33.33 percent of the time against an average no-vig implied probability of 33.05 percent. After the bookmaker's margin, betting every divisional dog straight up returned -3.96 percent.

The exception was short underdogs. Divisional dogs of 3 points or fewer won outright 46.41 percent of the time against 43.50 percent implied, and returned +4.23 percent on the moneyline. That is the same "close games" pattern from the spread table, and it carries the same warning about small subsets.

What Happens When You Parlay Every Divisional Underdog?

This is where a thin edge meets a long ticket.

Weekly divisional underdog ticket, 2015-2025Result
Weeks with a ticket188
Weeks it cashed18 (9.57%)

Median payout if it hit27.6 times the stake
Total profit, 1 unit per week+40.46 units
Return per ticket+21.52%
Two biggest hits combined+100.3 units
Longest losing run25 weeks

On paper, +21.52 percent per ticket looks excellent. Look at the two biggest hits. Those two weeks paid 52.9 and 47.4 units, more than the whole 11-year profit. Take them away and the same strategy lost about 60 units.

The season results show what living with it would be like. The ticket went 0-for-17 in 2015, finished in the red in six of eleven seasons, and once went 25 straight weeks without a hit. A bootstrap of the weekly results put the middle 95 percent of outcomes between -52 percent and +116 percent per ticket. That is not a strategy you can evaluate in a season, or even in three.

Smaller tickets behaved more sensibly. Random two-leg divisional underdog parlays hit 28.28 percent of the time against a breakeven of about 26.7 percent, a return of +6.31 percent. Three-leg tickets hit 14.21 percent against about 13.7 percent breakeven, +3.19 percent. Those are the straight-bet edge compounded, which is what a parlay does: it multiplies whatever edge each leg has, along with its variance. If you would not bet the legs one at a time, the parlay does not fix them.

Compare that with what we found for heavy-favorite moneyline parlays, where every leg was fairly priced and every ticket size lost, and primetime under parlays, where a real straight-bet trend still produced a ticket that went 0-for-16 in a season. The pattern is consistent. Parlays do not create edges. They expose the ones you have and amplify the ones you do not.

Do Divisional Games Go Under the Total?

Not in a way you can use. Divisional games went under 537 times and over 509 times, 51.34 percent, against 50.96 percent unders in non-divisional games. The average divisional total closed at 44.77 and the average game produced 44.82 points. The market already prices divisional games as lower scoring, and the final scores matched the price almost exactly.

That matters for same-game parlays, because "divisional dog plus the under" is a common pairing. The data supports the first half modestly and the second half not at all.

What Does This Mean for This Week's Divisional Games?

Through the first four weeks of 2026, divisional underdogs are 12-5 against the spread, which will make the trend sound stronger than ever this weekend. Seventeen games is nothing. The 2017 season had stretches like that before finishing 37-55.

As of Thursday morning, the nflverse file lists five divisional games for Sunday: Chicago at Green Bay with the Packers getting 1.5, Houston at Tennessee with the Titans getting 7.5, the Giants getting 3.5 at Washington, Denver at the Chargers with Los Angeles getting 3.5, and San Francisco getting 3 at Seattle. Two of those are road underdogs, the group that carried the historical effect. Three are home underdogs, the group that did not.

We are not turning that list into a ticket. The point of the study is that a divisional label is a weak input. Whether any of those numbers is wrong depends on the matchup, the injury report and where the line moves, which is what NFL picks against the spread are supposed to be built on.

⚔ The Live Edge: A pregame divisional parlay commits to five or six prices before any of those games tells you anything. The live market keeps re-pricing those same games after the first possession, the first injury and the first sign that a favorite cannot move the ball. That is where we work, and it is a large part of why we ended up limited on all six major U.S. sportsbooks.

To be precise about that callout: this study uses closing pregame prices and final scores. It contains no in-game prices, so it cannot measure whether live betting is easier to beat. That is structural reasoning, not a finding from these 1,056 games.

How Should You Use a Trend Like This?

As one input, priced honestly. A 52 to 53 percent trend is worth knowing, and it is worth almost nothing on its own once you pay the vig and accept the variance shown above. The bettors who profit from divisional spots do it by finding the games where the number is wrong for a reason, not by betting the label every week.

That is the difference between a trend and a sports handicapping service: the trend is public, and the market has already seen it. Our football betting picks page explains how we approach the NFL slate, our parlay picks page covers when we think a multi-leg ticket makes sense, and every graded play is on our results page. Where This Analysis Stops

Four limits.

This is NFL regular season only, 2015 through 2025, graded at closing prices. Opening numbers and early-week lines may behave differently, and many bettors cannot get the closing price.

The parlay results are dominated by a handful of weeks. Any summary statistic for the weekly ticket, including its +21.52 percent return, is fragile and should not be read as an expected return.

Divisional status is a blunt variable. It mixes rivalries, rematches and late-season games with nothing at stake, and this study does not separate them.

And the subsets are small. The spread-band and road-underdog cuts each contain a few hundred games, enough to describe what happened and not enough to promise it will continue.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do NFL divisional underdogs cover the spread more often?

Slightly. From 2015 through 2025, NFL divisional underdogs went 540-493-23 against the closing spread, a 52.27 percent cover rate and a +1.27 percent return at real prices. Non-divisional underdogs covered 50.92 percent. The difference is real but small, and a long-run loss is still inside the statistical range.

Is a divisional underdog parlay a good bet?

It is a high-variance bet with a thin edge underneath it. A weekly parlay of every divisional underdog cashed 18 times in 188 weeks from 2015 through 2025. It showed a profit overall, but two winning weeks produced more than the entire profit, and the ticket lost money in six of eleven seasons.

Are divisional home underdogs or road underdogs better bets?

Road underdogs. Divisional road underdogs covered 53.86 percent of the time from 2015 through 2025, while divisional home underdogs covered 49.88 percent and lost money at real prices. Almost the entire divisional underdog effect came from road teams.

Do big divisional underdogs cover more often?

No. Divisional underdogs of 7 points or more covered only 49.53 percent of the time, worse than non-divisional underdogs of the same size at 52.31 percent. The divisional edge appeared in games with spreads of 6.5 points or fewer.

Do NFL divisional games go under the total?

Not by enough to bet. Divisional games went under 51.34 percent of the time from 2015 through 2025, compared with 50.96 percent in other games. The average divisional total closed at 44.77 points and the average divisional game scored 44.82, so the market already prices them correctly.

How many legs should a divisional underdog parlay have?

Fewer is more predictable. Random two-leg divisional underdog parlays hit 28.28 percent of the time against a breakeven of about 26.7 percent, while the full weekly ticket of about five legs cashed 9.57 percent of the time with long losing runs. A parlay compounds whatever edge each leg has and multiplies the variance.

How are divisional underdogs doing in 2026?

Through the first four weeks of the 2026 season, divisional underdogs went 12-5 against the spread. That is a very small sample. In 2017, divisional underdogs finished 37-55, so a strong month says little about the rest of a season.
