NFL Winning Margin Parlays, Tested

An NFL winning margin parlay is far harder to hit than it looks. From 2015 through 2025, favorites won by 1 to 6 points in 20 to 25 percent of games at every spread, which is a fair price near +300 for one leg. Two same-week legs hit together 5.86 percent of the time among close favorites, a fair price of about +1600 before any sportsbook margin.

An NFL winning margin parlay asks two or more favorites to win by a specific band of points, and eleven seasons of results show how narrow that target really is. From 2015 through 2025, NFL favorites won by 1 to 6 points in roughly 20 to 25 percent of games, and that rate barely moved whether the favorite was laying 2 points or 12. A two-leg ticket on close favorites both winning by 1 to 6 hit 5.86 percent of the time, a fair price of about +1600. The Best Bet on Sports has built a verified $367,520+ in profit across all sportsbooks over more than twenty years by checking the real hit rate before the payout.

Winning margin markets look like a smarter version of a moneyline parlay. You are not just saying a team will win. You are saying how. The payouts are big, the menu is tidy, and a 3-point favorite "winning by a field goal" feels like the most natural result in football.

That feeling is half right. Three points is the single most common NFL winning margin. It is also only about one in eight favorite wins, and the 1-to-6 band as a whole lands about once in every four games. Stack two of those and the ticket becomes a long shot dressed up as a read.

This study measures it directly.

How Was the Study Built?

We used the public nflverse game file, which records every regular-season game with its closing point spread and final score. The sample runs from 2015 through 2025: 2,891 regular-season games with a favorite, after dropping games that closed at a pick'em.

For each game we took the favorite's final margin, positive if the favorite won and negative if it lost, and placed it into the bands a typical winning margin menu uses: 1 to 6, 7 to 12, 13 to 18, and 19 or more. Losses and ties sit in their own columns.

Then we grouped favorites by the size of the closing spread:

  • 1 to 3 points (1,083 games)
  • 3.5 to 6.5 points (988 games)
  • 7 to 9.5 points (465 games)
  • 10 points or more (355 games)

Fair prices in this post are the American odds that match the measured hit rate with no sportsbook margin. They are a ceiling for value, not a quote. Any real winning margin price you see will be shorter, because the book builds its hold into every band.

How Often Do NFL Favorites Win by 1 to 6 Points?

This is the full outcome table, as a share of all games in each spread band.

Favorite's spreadLoseWin by 1-6Win by 7-12Win by 13-18Win by 19+
1 to 343.86%23.55%14.59%8.22%9.33%

10 or more14.37%20.56%14.08%18.31%32.68%

Ties are not shown (0 to 0.65 percent per band), so rows sum to just under 100.

Read across the 1-to-6 column and the main finding jumps out. It barely changes. A 2-point favorite wins by 1 to 6 about 23.6 percent of the time. A 5-point favorite does it 24.6 percent of the time. A double-digit favorite still does it 20.6 percent of the time.

What the spread actually changes is the two ends of the row: how often the favorite loses, and how often it wins big. A bigger spread moves probability out of the "lose" column and into the "19 or more" column. The one-score win stays roughly a one-in-four event no matter what.

The plausible range around those numbers is narrow enough to trust. For 3.5-to-6.5-point favorites, the 1-to-6 rate was 24.60 percent, with a bootstrap range of about 22.0 to 27.5 percent across 988 games. For 1-to-3-point favorites, the range was about 21.1 to 26.0 percent.

What Is a Fair Price for a Single Winning Margin Leg?

Converting those rates into prices shows what the market has to beat.

Favorite's spreadWin by 1-6 (fair)Win by 7-12 (fair)Win by 13-18 (fair)Win by 19+ (fair)
1 to 3+325+585+1117+972
3.5 to 6.5+307+533+723+648
7 to 9.5+400+481+528+347
10 or more+386+610+446+206

If a book offers a 4-point favorite to win by 1 to 6 at +300, that price sits just under the measured fair line of +307. It is not a gift. It is roughly a fair bet before considering the book's hold on the rest of the menu, and in practice offered prices are often shorter than that.

The cleaner way to use this table is as a filter. If the price in front of you is shorter than the fair number, the bet is negative expectation on the historical record. If it is meaningfully longer, you have a reason to look closer, not a reason to fire.

One trap shows up clearly. Bettors gravitate to "win by 7 to 12" on a touchdown favorite because a 7-point spread makes a 7-to-12-point win feel like the expected outcome. It happened 17.20 percent of the time for 7-to-9.5-point favorites, a fair price of +481. The single most likely band for those favorites was actually 19 or more, at 22.37 percent.

Which Exact Margins Happen Most Often?

The 1-to-6 band is so steady partly because one number dominates it. Among all favorite wins in the sample, the exact final margins broke down like this:

Exact winning marginShare of favorite wins
312.99%
78.22%
66.23%
145.45%
104.71%
84.50%
54.24%
44.14%
23.93%
173.72%

A 3-point win is the most common outcome, by a wide margin. That is the key number every handicapper works around, and the reason close games cluster in the 1-to-6 band. But notice that 7 is the second most common margin, and it falls into the next band. A single extra point after a late touchdown moves a ticket from winner to loser.

That is the hidden fragility of margin bands. The edges of each band sit right on top of key numbers. Our NFL point spread guide covers why 3 and 7 matter so much against the number. Winning margin bets put those same key numbers at the boundaries of your ticket.

What Happens When You Parlay Two Winning Margin Legs?

To measure parlays without cherry-picking, we built every possible two-game combination inside the same season and week, using favorites from the same spread band. That reflects how people actually build these tickets: two games on the same slate.

Two-leg ticketTicketsBoth hitHit rateFair price
Both 1-3 favorites win by 1-62,8521675.86%+1608
Both 3.5-6.5 favorites win by 1-62,4051526.32%+1482
Both 7-9.5 favorites win by 1-6541234.25%+2252
Both 1-3 favorites win by 7-122,852612.14%+4575
Both 3.5-6.5 favorites win by 7-122,405502.08%+4710
Any two favorites win by 1-620,4261,0575.17%+1832

Two things stand out.

First, the legs behaved close to independently. Squaring the single-leg rate for 1-to-3-point favorites (23.55 percent) gives 5.55 percent, and the real pair rate was 5.86 percent. Games on the same Sunday did not cluster into "close-game weeks" in any way you could plan around. That means the parlay math is roughly multiplicative, and the book's margin on each leg multiplies along with it.

Second, the payout has to be enormous just to break even. A two-leg 1-to-6 ticket needs about +1500 to +1600 to be a fair bet. If each leg is priced at a modest discount to fair, the combined discount compounds, and a ticket that looks like a 15-to-1 shot is usually priced like a 12-to-1 shot. Our 2-team parlay payout calculator shows how fast that compounding eats the return.

Did the Pattern Change Over Time?

The one-score band was stable across eras. For 1-to-3-point favorites, the 1-to-6 rate was 20.93 percent from 2015 through 2019 and 25.57 percent from 2020 through 2025. For 3.5-to-6.5-point favorites, it was 24.89 percent and then 24.35 percent.

The modest rise among the closest favorites matches what you would expect from the post-2015 extra-point distance and more aggressive fourth-down decisions, both of which reshape late scoring. But the band never left the 20-to-26-percent range in any group.

Through the 2026 games played so far, which run to the Week 7 Thursday game, favorites won by 1 to 6 in 23 of 94 games, or 24.5 percent. That is right on the long-run line, and far too small a sample to suggest anything new.

Why Do Winning Margin Parlays Look Better Than They Are?

Because the bettor is solving the wrong problem. The question people ask is "who wins and is it close?" The question the ticket asks is "does the final whistle land inside a six-point window, twice?"

A few habits make the gap worse:

  • Anchoring on the spread. A 3-point spread does not mean a 3-point game. It means the market thinks the favorite is about 3 points better on average, with a wide spread of outcomes around that.
  • Ignoring garbage time. A late touchdown by a trailing team, or a late field goal by a leading one, moves the margin without changing who won. Those plays decide margin bands constantly.
  • Overrating your read. Calling a "close game" is not a skill the market lacks. The closing number already contains everyone's view of how competitive the game will be.
⚔ The Live Edge: Margin bands are priced before kickoff from a full distribution of possible games. Once the game starts, most of that distribution disappears. A favorite up 10 at halftime with a backup quarterback forced into the game is a different margin bet than the one quoted at 1 p.m., and the live board re-prices that change in seconds. Reading which way a game is really going, drive by drive, is where our live betting picks do their work and part of why we are limited on all six major U.S. sportsbooks.

To be clear about that callout: this study uses closing spreads and final scores only. It contains no in-game prices, so it cannot show that live margin markets are mispriced. The argument for working inside the game is structural reasoning, not a finding from these 2,891 games.

How Should You Use Winning Margin Bets?

If you play them at all, treat them as single-leg value bets, not parlay fuel.

1. Compare the price to the fair line in the table above. If a 1-to-6 price on a close favorite is shorter than about +300, pass. 2. Price the boundary. A band that ends at 6 loses to every 7-point win. If the game profiles as a likely late touchdown, that boundary matters more than the side. 3. Do not stack bands. Two legs that each carry a small negative edge become one ticket with a bigger negative edge. 4. Remember the alternative. A favorite winning by 7 or more is the same as the favorite covering an alternate -6.5 line, which our guide to alternate lines and buying points prices directly. Compare both before you choose.

For the closer-to-even version of this idea, our study of scoring first and winning tests another popular two-condition bet, and our fourth-quarter lead study shows how hold rates change once the game is already underway.

Why Does This Matter If You Buy Football Picks?

Because any service selling margin parlays should be able to show you this math. A service that posts "Chiefs by 1-6 plus Bills by 1-6" without a price discipline is selling excitement, not edge.

The best football handicappers talk about price first and story second. If you are comparing football betting picks or weighing whether to buy sports picks at all, ask what fair price the picks are measured against. The honest answer to "what does a winning margin parlay pay" is "less than it should, almost every time."

For the core side-and-spread work that converts more reliably, see our NFL picks against the spread and the weekly NFL picks. If basketball is your next sport, our basketball handicappers apply the same price-first discipline to the NBA slate.

What Are the Limits of This Study?

  • No real winning margin prices. There is no public history of offered margin-band odds, so this study compares outcomes to fair prices only. It cannot tell you how much a specific book shades each band.
  • Bands vary by book. Some books use different cutoffs or split ties differently. Check the exact rules before using these numbers.
  • Closing lines only. Margins were grouped by the closing spread. Bets placed earlier at a different number carry different probabilities.
  • Regular season only. Playoff games were excluded.
  • Small 2026 sample. The current-season numbers are shown for context, not as evidence of change.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a winning margin bet in the NFL?

A winning margin bet asks you to pick which team wins and by roughly how many points, using bands such as 1 to 6, 7 to 12, 13 to 18, or 19 or more. You only win if the final margin lands inside your chosen band. It pays more than a moneyline because it is much harder to hit, and the bands sit right on top of key numbers like 3 and 7.

How often do NFL favorites win by 1 to 6 points?

From 2015 through 2025, favorites won by 1 to 6 points in roughly 20 to 25 percent of regular-season games. The rate was 23.55 percent for 1-to-3-point favorites, 24.60 percent for 3.5-to-6.5-point favorites, 20.00 percent for 7-to-9.5-point favorites, and 20.56 percent for favorites of 10 or more. The size of the spread barely changed it.

What is a fair price for a favorite to win by 1 to 6?

Based on the 2015-2025 hit rates, the fair price is about +307 to +325 for favorites of 6.5 points or less and about +386 to +400 for larger favorites. Those are no-margin prices. Any sportsbook quote will normally be shorter because the book builds its hold into each band, so a quote below the fair number is a losing bet on the historical record.

Are winning margin parlays a good bet?

Usually not. Two same-week legs on close favorites both winning by 1 to 6 hit only 5.86 percent of the time, a fair price of about +1600. The legs behaved close to independently, so each leg's sportsbook margin multiplies across the ticket. A winning margin bet is easier to justify as a single value bet than as a parlay.

What is the most common winning margin in the NFL?

Three points. Among favorite wins from 2015 through 2025, 12.99 percent ended in a 3-point margin, followed by 7 points at 8.22 percent and 6 points at 6.23 percent. Because 7 is so common and falls just outside the 1-to-6 band, a single late touchdown or extra point regularly decides a winning margin ticket.

Should I bet a touchdown favorite to win by 7 to 12?

The data says be careful. Favorites of 7 to 9.5 points won by 7 to 12 just 17.20 percent of the time, a fair price of +481. Their single most likely band was actually a win by 19 or more, at 22.37 percent. The spread describes the average result, not the most likely final margin.

How does live betting change winning margin bets?

Pregame margin prices cover every possible version of the game. Once play starts, injuries, game script and scoring pace remove most of those versions, and the live board re-prices quickly. This study uses closing lines and final scores only, so it does not measure live prices, but the in-game window is where game-specific information becomes visible before the final result.
