Juiced NFL Parlay Legs, Tested

Juiced NFL parlay legs have not covered more often than cheap ones. From 2010 through 2025, spread sides priced at -120 or worse covered 47.62 percent of the time while their prices implied 53.45 percent, a -12.73 percent return. Two-leg parlays of -115-or-worse sides hit 26.40 percent against a 29.23 percent break-even. Pairs of -105-or-better sides finished near even.
Juiced NFL spread legs have not been better parlay legs. Across 4,174 regular-season games from 2010 through 2025, sides priced at -120 or worse covered 47.62 percent of the time, while their no-vig prices implied 53.45 percent, a -12.73 percent return per dollar. Two-leg parlays built from sides priced at -115 or worse hit 26.40 percent of the time against a 29.23 percent break-even and lost 9.52 percent per dollar. Pairs of sides priced at -105 or better finished almost exactly even. The Best Bet on Sports has built a verified $367,520+ in profit across all sportsbooks over more than twenty years by testing betting folklore like this before trusting it.
Every parlay bettor has seen it. Two teams at the same number, one at -110 and one at -120. The common reading is that the extra juice is a signal: the book saw sharp money on that side and raised the price instead of moving the line. Follow the juice, the theory goes, and you are riding with the bettors who know.
We wanted to know if that holds up, because it matters more in a parlay than anywhere else. A juiced leg shrinks the payout on every ticket it touches, so it has to cover more often just to break even.
How Did We Test Juiced Parlay Legs?
We used the nflverse game dataset, which records closing spreads, the price on each side of the spread, and final scores for every NFL game. Prices are in the file for nearly every game from 2010 on, so the study covers the 2010 through 2025 regular seasons: 4,174 games and 8,348 sides.
Each side was graded against its closing spread. Pushes count as zero return and are removed from cover rates. For each game we also stripped the margin from the two prices to get a no-vig probability, which is the market's own estimate of how often that side should cover. If juice really carries information, sides with heavier prices should cover at least as often as their no-vig number says.
For parlays, we paired every two sides from different games in the same week, graded both legs and paid each winning ticket the product of the two decimal prices. That is how sportsbooks price a standard parlay, so the return on each ticket is what a bettor would have been paid. These pairs overlap, since one side shows up in many tickets, so treat the parlay rates as a description, not as independent trials.
One limit to keep in mind: the dataset carries one price per side, so it reflects a single market snapshot, not the best price available across every book.
Do Juiced Spread Sides Cover More Often?
No. Here is every side, grouped by its price.
| Spread price, 2010-2025 | Sides | ATS record | Cover rate | No-vig implied | Return per dollar |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| -120 or worse | 331 | 150-165-16 | 47.62% | 53.45% | -12.73% |
| -119 to -115 | 774 | 382-371-21 | 50.73% | 52.05% | -5.49% |
| -114 to -111 | 839 | 422-402-15 | 51.21% | 51.42% | -3.21% |
| -110 or -109 | 1,107 | 546-537-24 | 50.42% | 50.66% | -3.59% |
| -108 to -105 | 1,926 | 936-947-43 | 49.71% | 50.11% | -3.49% |
| -104 to -101 | 1,426 | 701-687-38 | 50.50% | 49.42% | -0.23% |
| Even or plus money | 1,945 | 931-959-55 | 49.26% | 47.92% | +0.41% |
Read the cover rate column from top to bottom and it barely moves. The market's no-vig estimate runs from 53.45 percent at the expensive end to 47.92 percent at the cheap end, a spread of more than five points. Actual cover rates stay between 47.6 and 51.2 percent with no order to them. The correlation between a side's no-vig probability and whether it covered was -0.002, which is zero.
That means the juice on an NFL spread, on its own, has not told you who covers. What it has told you is how much you pay. The heaviest sides lost 12.73 percent per dollar. Sides at even money or better finished slightly positive. Everything in between lost roughly the standard vig.
The no-vig fair price guide on this site describes a -115/-105 split as a sign that sharp money hit the favorite. This data does not support reading it that way at closing prices. If a shaded price did mean sharp action, the closing number had already absorbed it.
Does It Matter Whether the Juiced Side Is the Favorite?
Not much. Among sides priced at -115 or worse, favorites covered 50.19 percent of the time (258-256-20) and underdogs covered 49.46 percent (274-280-17). Both carried a no-vig estimate of about 52.5 percent, and both lost money, -6.94 percent on favorites and -8.33 percent on underdogs.
The juice is not hiding a favorite or underdog effect. It is simply a price, and the price has been a little too high.
Has the Pattern Changed Over Time?
Somewhat, which is worth knowing before you rule anything out.
| Spread price | 2010-2017 cover | 2010-2017 return | 2018-2025 cover | 2018-2025 return |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| -120 or worse | 43.79% (160) | -19.64% | 51.23% (171) | -6.27% |
| -119 to -115 | 48.35% (282) | -9.90% | 52.08% (492) | -2.96% |
| -114 to -111 | 47.66% (326) | -9.92% | 53.48% (513) | +1.06% |
| Even or plus money | 50.87% (1,181) | +3.89% | 46.77% (764) | -4.96% |
From 2010 through 2017, heavily juiced sides were a disaster and plus-money sides made a little money. From 2018 through 2025, the gap closed, and moderately shaded sides even covered a bit more often than their prices required. The market may have gotten better at using price as information. It did not get good enough to make juiced sides a winning bet: the -120 band still lost 6.27 percent per dollar in the recent era.
The other change is how often books shade at all. In the dataset, 10 percent of sides were priced at -115 or worse in 2010. That share was 19.1 percent in 2023, 21.3 percent in 2024 and 32.2 percent in 2025. Books are moving the price far more often instead of moving the number, which means a typical NFL parlay now has a much better chance of carrying a juiced leg.
What Does Juice Do to a Parlay Payout?
It compounds. A standard two-leg parlay at -110 on both sides pays +264, which needs both legs to hit 27.47 percent of the time. Change both legs to -120 and the ticket pays about +236, which needs 29.75 percent. Make both legs even money and it pays +300, which needs 25.00 percent.
| Two-leg parlay, 2010-2025 | Tickets | Both legs covered | Average payout | Needed to break even | Return per dollar |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Both legs -115 or worse | 2,352 | 26.40% | about +242 | 29.23% | -9.52% |
| Both legs -105 or better | 23,790 | 24.88% | about +303 | 24.86% | +0.25% |
The juiced pairs hit more often, 26.40 percent against 24.88 percent, partly because the cheaper pool includes many plus-money underdog sides. But hitting more often did not come close to covering the lower payout. The juiced tickets lost 9.52 percent per dollar. The cheap tickets broke even.
This is the same multiplication we have found in every parlay study on this site, from favorite and over parlays to road favorite parlays. A parlay does not create value. It multiplies whatever cost or value sits in each leg. A leg that costs you 5 or 12 cents more than fair costs you more than that once it is stacked.
What Has 2026 Shown So Far?
Through Week 7, sides priced at -115 or worse are 33-27-4 against the spread, and sides at -105 or better are 27-33-4. That is 64 games, a small enough sample that a few late covers flip it, and it is the opposite of the 2010-2025 result. It tells you nothing reliable about Week 8.
Which Week 8 Games Carry Juiced Sides?
Based on the prices in the dataset as of Oct. 30, seven Week 8 games have a side at -115 or worse. All of these prices can move before kickoff, and other books will show different numbers.
| Game | Juiced side | Spread price | Other side |
|---|---|---|---|
| Minnesota at Detroit | Lions -3 | -120 | Vikings +3 at even money |
| LA Chargers at LA Rams | Rams -6.5 | -118 | Chargers +6.5 at -102 |
| Baltimore at Buffalo | Bills -3 | -115 | Ravens +3 at -105 |
| Arizona at Dallas | Cardinals +7 | -115 | Cowboys -7 at -105 |
| Kansas City at Denver | Broncos +1.5 | -115 | Chiefs -1.5 at -105 |
| New England at Miami | Dolphins +7 | -115 | Patriots -7 at -105 |
| Chicago at Seattle (Mon.) | Seahawks -3 | -115 | Bears +3 at -105 |
A two-leg parlay of the Lions at -120 and the Seahawks at -115 would pay about +243, well below a standard +264 ticket. We are not taking a side in any of these games. The point of the table is the cost: if you like a juiced side, you need to like it by more, or find it at a better price somewhere else.
What Should a Parlay Bettor Take From This?
Three things. First, juice on an NFL spread is a cost, not a tip. At closing prices it has not predicted covers, and the heaviest prices have been the worst bets. Second, in a parlay the cost compounds, so a ticket built from juiced legs needs a real edge in each leg just to stay level. Third, books are shading more often than they used to, which makes price shopping a bigger part of any parlay than it was five years ago.
That is the honest answer we give about every parlay idea. Our parlay picks page explains how we use parlays, and our football betting picks page covers the weekly approach. Frequently Asked Questions
Does heavy juice on an NFL spread mean sharp money?
It may reflect where money came in, but at closing prices it has not predicted covers. From 2010 through 2025, NFL spread sides priced at -120 or worse covered 47.62 percent of the time while their no-vig prices implied 53.45 percent. The correlation between a side's no-vig probability and whether it covered was effectively zero.
Should I avoid juiced legs in a parlay?
You should demand more from them. Two-leg NFL parlays built from sides priced at -115 or worse hit 26.40 percent of the time from 2010 through 2025, short of the 29.23 percent their lower payouts required, and lost 9.52 percent per dollar. Pairs of sides priced at -105 or better finished near break-even.
How much does -120 juice lower a two-leg parlay payout?
A two-leg parlay at -110 on both sides pays about +264 and needs both legs to hit 27.47 percent of the time. At -120 on both sides it pays about +236 and needs 29.75 percent. At even money on both sides it pays +300 and needs 25.00 percent.
Do juiced favorites cover more than juiced underdogs?
No meaningful difference. Among NFL spread sides priced at -115 or worse from 2010 through 2025, favorites covered 50.19 percent of the time and underdogs covered 49.46 percent. Both lost money, about -6.9 percent and -8.3 percent per dollar.
Are sportsbooks shading NFL spread prices more often?
Yes, in this data. About 10 percent of NFL spread sides were priced at -115 or worse in 2010. That share rose to 19.1 percent in 2023, 21.3 percent in 2024 and 32.2 percent in 2025, so modern parlays are far more likely to include a juiced leg.
Which Week 8 NFL games have juiced spread sides in 2026?
Based on prices in the nflverse dataset on Oct. 30, the Lions at -3 (-120) against Minnesota, the Rams at -6.5 (-118), and the Bills, Seahawks, Cardinals, Broncos and Dolphins at -115. Prices move before kickoff and differ by sportsbook.
What is the best way to handle juice in parlays?
Shop for price on every leg before building the ticket. Because a parlay multiplies each leg's price, a few cents saved on each leg adds up quickly. If a side is only available at a heavy price, it needs a clear edge to belong in a parlay at all.
