NFL Road Favorite Parlays, Tested

NFL road favorite parlays lost less than home favorite parlays but still lost. From 2015 through 2025, two-leg moneyline parlays of road favorites playing the same week returned -2.66 percent per dollar across 2,843 tickets, while home favorite pairs returned -9.25 percent. Road favorites alone won 65.27 percent of games and returned -1.26 percent at closing prices.
NFL road favorites have been the least overpriced favorites in football, and parlaying them has still lost money. From 2015 through 2025, road favorites won 65.27 percent of 1,083 regular-season games and returned -1.26 percent per dollar on the moneyline at closing prices. Home favorites returned -4.44 percent. Pairing two road favorites from the same week produced 2,843 moneyline parlays that hit 42.67 percent of the time and returned -2.66 percent, against -9.25 percent for home favorite pairs. The Best Bet on Sports has built a verified $367,520+ in profit across all sportsbooks over more than twenty years by testing parlay ideas like this before betting them.
The case for road favorites is an old one. When the market makes a team favored on the road, it is saying that team is clearly better, good enough to overcome home field. Home favorites, the argument goes, carry a home-field premium that has been shrinking for a decade, and casual money keeps piling on them anyway. So if you are going to parlay favorites, the road ones should be the better legs.
Part of that argument holds up. The parlay part does not.
How Did We Test Road Favorite Parlays?
We used the nflverse game dataset, which records every NFL game with closing spreads, closing moneylines and final scores. We kept regular-season games from 2015 through 2025 played at one team's home stadium, which removes international and neutral-site games where "road" means nothing. A road favorite is a visiting team with a negative closing spread.
Each moneyline leg was graded at its closing price. A two-leg parlay pays the product of the two decimal prices, which is how sportsbooks price standard parlays, so the return on each ticket is what a bettor would actually have been paid. For spread parlays, both legs had to cover, pushes were removed, and the ticket was compared with the standard +264 payout, which needs both legs to hit 27.47 percent of the time.
Are Road Favorites Better Bets Than Home Favorites?
On the moneyline, yes, by a meaningful margin. Neither one beat the market.
| Favorite type, 2015-2025 | Games | ATS record | Cover rate | Won outright | Price implied | Moneyline return |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Road favorites | 1,083 | 526-533-24 | 49.67% | 65.27% | 66.05% | -1.26% |
| Home favorites | 1,758 | 814-895-49 | 47.63% | 66.78% | 69.66% | -4.44% |
"Price implied" is the average win probability built into the closing moneyline, including the sportsbook's margin. Road favorites won about 0.8 points less often than their prices implied. Home favorites won about 2.9 points less often. That gap is the whole story of this article: home favorites are priced as if home field is worth more than it has been.
The pattern is not a one-era accident. From 2006 through 2014, road favorites returned -1.92 percent on the moneyline and home favorites -4.25 percent. From 2020 through 2025, road favorites returned +0.13 percent, essentially break-even, while home favorites returned -4.83 percent. Against the spread, home favorites covered 47.63 percent over the full window, which means the home underdog side covered 52.37 percent, right at the break-even line.
Does the Size of the Spread Matter?
It matters for how badly you lose, and at the extremes it matters a lot.
| Road favorite spread | Games | ATS cover | Won outright | Price implied | Moneyline return |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 0.5 to 3 | 492 | 50.95% | 57.06% | 57.67% | -1.17% |
| 3.5 to 6.5 | 360 | 50.70% | 67.69% | 68.34% | -1.33% |
| 7 to 9.5 | 152 | 46.00% | 80.00% | 77.59% | +3.19% |
| 10 or more | 79 | 44.16% | 77.22% | 85.58% | -9.88% |
Short and mid-size road favorites were priced almost exactly right. Road favorites of 7 to 9.5 points returned +3.19 percent on the moneyline, but that is 152 games and the plausible range on their 80 percent win rate runs from 72.9 to 85.6 percent, which comfortably includes losing. It was also one of several bands we looked at, which makes it more likely to be luck.
The road favorites of 10 or more are the clearest result in the table, and it points the other way. They won only 77.22 percent of the time while their prices implied 85.58 percent, a -9.88 percent return across 79 games. A double-digit road favorite is often a strong team visiting a bad one, and that is exactly the kind of leg bettors add to a parlay because it feels safe. Against the spread, those same teams covered only 44.16 percent.
Do Two-Leg Road Favorite Parlays Make Money?
Not overall. Here is every same-week pairing of two road favorites, split by spread band, next to the same test for home favorites.
| Two-leg moneyline parlay, 2015-2025 | Tickets | Both won | Return per dollar |
|---|---|---|---|
| Road favorites, 0.5 to 3 | 587 | 33.73% | +0.41% |
| Road favorites, 3.5 to 6.5 | 336 | 47.92% | +1.34% |
| Road favorites, 7 or more | 126 | 65.08% | +1.25% |
| All road favorite pairs | 2,843 | 42.67% | -2.66% |
| Home favorites, 0.5 to 3 | 759 | 30.43% | -10.53% |
| Home favorites, 3.5 to 6.5 | 920 | 41.52% | -11.87% |
| Home favorites, 7 or more | 855 | 66.67% | -1.24% |
| All home favorite pairs | 7,520 | 44.41% | -9.25% |
The within-band road pairs land slightly above zero, and the full road pool lands at -2.66 percent. The difference comes from pairs that mix bands, especially pairs that include a 10-point road favorite, which carried the worst pricing in the study. The positive bands are small samples and should be read as "roughly break-even," not as a system.
The home favorite results are where the lesson lives. Pairing two short home favorites lost 10.53 percent per dollar. Pairing two mid-size home favorites lost 11.87 percent. A parlay multiplies the margin in each leg, so the overpricing on home favorites roughly doubled in a two-leg ticket. That is the same multiplication we found for underdog moneyline parlays and heavy favorite moneyline parlays. Parlays do not create value. They magnify whatever value or cost is already in each leg.
What About Road Favorite Spread Parlays?
Worse. Both road favorites covered in 675 of 2,713 two-leg pairs, 24.88 percent, well short of the 27.47 percent needed at +264. Road favorites of 3.5 to 6.5 points hit 27.84 percent across 334 pairs, just above the line and well inside the noise. Road favorites of 7 or more hit 20.49 percent. Home favorite spread pairs hit 22.30 percent across 7,136 tickets.
If you are going to build a favorite parlay, the moneyline has been the better instrument for road favorites. That matches what we found when we asked whether to take the moneyline or the spread with NFL favorites: the spread costs favorites more than the moneyline does, and road favorites were the better bet on either.
How Much Does It Swing Year to Year?
A lot. Road favorites covered 44.33 percent of the time in 2022 and 53.70 percent in 2024. They won outright 57.6 percent of the time in 2018 and 73.4 percent in 2024. A bettor who started building road favorite parlays in 2024 would believe the angle was money, and one who started in 2022 would have quit.
Through Week 7 of 2026, road favorites are 21-18-2 against the spread and 27-14 straight up, a small sample that tells you nothing about Week 8.
Which Week 8 Games Have Road Favorites?
Only two, based on early lines in the dataset. Both will move.
| Game | Road favorite | Early spread | Early moneyline |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kansas City at Denver | Chiefs | -1.5 | -122 |
| New England at Miami | Patriots | -7 | -310 |
Paired, those two prices would pay about +141. Kansas City sits in the band that has been priced almost exactly right. New England sits in the 7 to 9.5 band, the small sample that ran hot. Denver is also a division revenge spot after losing 31-10 in Kansas City in Week 1. None of that makes either game a bet, and we are not taking a side here. Injuries, quarterback health and matchups will matter far more than which sideline a team stands on.
What Should a Favorite Parlay Bettor Take From This?
Three things. First, if you must parlay favorites, road favorites have cost you far less than home favorites, because the home-field premium has been overpriced for at least two decades. Second, double-digit favorites on the road are not safe legs; they have been the most overpriced favorites in this data. Third, no version of this parlay made reliable money. The best you can say is that some versions lost slowly.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are NFL road favorites good bets?
They have been the least overpriced favorites, but not profitable. From 2015 through 2025, road favorites won 65.27 percent of 1,083 regular-season games while their closing moneylines implied 66.05 percent, a -1.26 percent return per dollar. Against the spread they covered 49.67 percent, below the 52.38 percent needed at -110.
Do road favorite parlays make money?
Not overall. Two-leg moneyline parlays of road favorites playing in the same week returned -2.66 percent per dollar across 2,843 tickets from 2015 through 2025, hitting 42.67 percent of the time. Pairs within the same spread band landed near break-even, but those were small samples.
Why are home favorites worse bets than road favorites?
Home favorites have been priced as if home field is worth more than it has been. From 2015 through 2025, home favorites won 66.78 percent of games while their prices implied 69.66 percent, a -4.44 percent moneyline return. Two-leg home favorite parlays returned -9.25 percent because a parlay multiplies the cost in each leg.
Are double-digit road favorites safe parlay legs?
No. Road favorites of 10 or more points won 77.22 percent of the time from 2015 through 2025 while their prices implied 85.58 percent, a -9.88 percent moneyline return across 79 games. They covered the spread only 44.16 percent of the time.
Should I parlay road favorites on the moneyline or the spread?
The moneyline has held up better. Two-leg road favorite spread parlays hit 24.88 percent of the time from 2015 through 2025, short of the 27.47 percent needed at the standard +264 payout. The moneyline version lost far less per dollar.
Which NFL teams are road favorites in Week 8 of 2026?
Based on early lines, two: Kansas City at Denver, with the Chiefs favored by 1.5 at about -122, and New England at Miami, with the Patriots favored by 7 at about -310. Paired, those prices would pay roughly +141. Lines will move before kickoff.
What is the smartest way to bet NFL favorites?
Bet them one at a time unless you have a reason to believe both legs are underpriced. A parlay multiplies the margin in every leg, so it turns a small cost into a larger one. Price shopping, avoiding inflated home favorites and watching for live spots where a good road team falls behind early have all done more for bettors than stacking favorites.
