NFL Team Total Parlays, Tested

An NFL team total parlay rarely beats its payout. From 2015 through 2025, favorites topped their implied team total 48.8 percent of the time and underdogs 50.1 percent. Both teams in the same game went over just 25.7 percent of the time, a fair price near +289, short of the 27.5 percent a standard +264 two-leg payout needs, because the two team totals are nearly independent.

An NFL team total parlay feels like a sharper way to bet points than a plain over, because you get to pick which offense you trust. The numbers say the market already knows. From 2015 through 2025, favorites topped their implied team total 48.8 percent of the time and underdogs 50.1 percent. Stacking both team overs in the same game cashed 25.7 percent of the time, a fair price near +289, while a standard two-leg parlay at -110 pays only +264. The two team totals in one game moved almost independently, with a correlation of 0.035. The Best Bet on Sports has built a verified $367,520+ in profit across all sportsbooks over more than twenty years by checking what a ticket actually hits before it pays for one.

Team totals have become one of the most popular building blocks on a Sunday slip. A bettor likes an offense, does not want to lay points, and does not want to need the other team's help to clear a full-game over. So the team total goes on the ticket, often alongside another one.

The logic sounds clean. The results are less forgiving. We pulled every regular-season NFL game from 2015 through 2025 with a favorite, 2,891 games, and graded each team against the total its closing line implied. Here is what that study shows, including the one split that looks tempting and why we would not build a parlay on it.

How Did We Test NFL Team Totals?

Sportsbooks post team totals directly, but historical team total lines are not available in any public archive we trust. What is available is the closing spread and closing total for every game in the nflverse dataset, and those two numbers imply each team's expected score.

The math is simple. Add the spread to the total and divide by two for the favorite. Subtract the spread from the total and divide by two for the underdog. A game with a 45.5 total and a 3.5-point spread implies 24.5 points for the favorite and 21 for the underdog.

StepFavoriteUnderdog
Formula(Total + Spread) / 2(Total - Spread) / 2
Example: 45.5 total, 3.5 spread24.521.0
Average implied total, 2015-202525.2219.97
Average actual points, 2015-202525.3920.21

That is a clean benchmark, but it is not identical to a posted team total. About 46 percent of the implied numbers land on a quarter point, which a book would round, and posted team totals carry their own juice. Treat everything here as a test of the market's expected score, not of a specific book's posted line. We dropped pick'em games because neither side is the favorite.

Do Favorites or Underdogs Beat Their Team Totals?

Neither does by enough to matter. Across 2,891 games, the favorite went over its implied team total 1,392 times and under 1,463 times, with 36 landing exactly on the number. That is a 48.76 percent over rate, with a plausible range from 46.9 to 50.6 percent.

Underdogs were a coin flip. They went over 1,435 times and under 1,428 times, a 50.12 percent over rate. The full-game over hit 48.90 percent.

Bet type (2015-2025)OverUnderPushOver rate
Favorite team total1,3921,4633648.76%
Underdog team total1,4351,4282850.12%
Full-game total1,4011,4642648.90%

At standard -110 pricing you need 52.38 percent to break even on a single bet. None of these rates gets close in either direction. The market's expected score for each side is about as accurate as its expected score for the game.

That alone is a problem for team total parlays. A two-leg parlay is just two bets that both have to win. If neither leg beats 52.38 percent on its own, combining them does not create an edge. It multiplies the house's.

Are the Two Team Totals in One Game Correlated?

Barely, and that is the finding most bettors get wrong. A common belief is that a shootout lifts both offenses together, so pairing both team overs in one game is a correlated play that books underprice. The data does not support much of that.

We measured how far each team landed above or below its implied total and compared the two sides. The correlation was 0.035. For context, zero means no relationship and 1.0 means the two move in lockstep. At 0.035, knowing that one offense blew past its number tells you almost nothing about the other.

Same-game combinationHit rateIf independent
Both team totals over25.72%24.42%
Both team totals under26.88%25.58%
Favorite over, underdog under23.03%—

Both overs hit 727 times in 2,827 games without a push, a 25.72 percent rate. Independence would predict 24.42 percent. There is a small bump, roughly 1.3 points, but it is far from the large correlation the shootout story implies.

Now look at the price. A 25.72 percent outcome is worth about +289. A standard two-leg parlay at -110 per leg pays +264, which needs a 27.47 percent hit rate to break even. Both-overs falls about 1.75 points short of that. Same-game parlay pricing varies by book, and some books shade correlated legs further, so the real payout on your app may be lower still.

Compare that with simply betting the full-game over. That is one leg, priced at -110, hitting 48.90 percent in this sample. Both-team-overs is a narrower, harder version of nearly the same opinion, and it pays less than its true odds.

Does the Spread Change How Team Totals Land?

Here is where the study gets interesting, and where it is easiest to fool yourself. We split favorites and underdogs by the size of the spread.

Spread bandGamesFavorite TT overUnderdog TT over
0.5 to 31,08344.67%50.19%
3.5 to 6.598851.13%51.28%
7 to 9.546552.71%50.33%
10 or more35549.43%46.42%

Short favorites of three points or fewer went over their implied team total only 44.67 percent of the time, 478 overs against 592 unders. Flip it around and the under on a short favorite's team total hit 55.33 percent, which clears the 52.38 percent break-even. The plausible range for the over rate runs from 41.7 to 47.7 percent, so random noise alone is an unlikely explanation.

We still would not build a parlay on it, for three reasons.

It is one of many cuts. We tested four spread bands for each side, plus four bands of implied team totals for each side, plus several parlay structures. When you slice a dataset a dozen ways, one slice will look strong by chance. A 55 percent result found that way deserves a discount.

The posted line is not the implied line. The short-favorite effect could shrink or vanish once you use real posted team totals, which books shade and round. Our benchmark is the market's expected score, not the line you would actually bet.

It moves around year to year. Favorites' team total over rate ran from 42.7 percent in 2022 to 55.0 percent in 2024. A pattern that swings that much by season is not one we would stake a multi-leg ticket on.

The same caution applies to the implied-total cut. Favorites with an implied total of 22.5 or lower went over 45.42 percent of the time. That overlaps heavily with the short-favorite effect, since low team totals usually come with small spreads, so it is the same signal seen twice, not a second confirmation.

What About Team Total Parlays Across Different Games?

Most team total parlays are not same-game tickets. They are two or three offenses from different games stacked on one slip. We tested every two-game pair within the same week, roughly 20,000 combinations for each structure.

Two-leg, same-week cross-game parlayHit rateFair price
Two favorite team total overs23.87%+319
Two underdog team total overs24.94%+301
Two underdog team total unders24.80%+303
Two favorite team total unders26.30%+280

Every structure falls short of the 27.47 percent a +264 payout needs. The closest is two favorite team total unders at 26.30 percent, which still loses money at standard pricing. Two favorite overs, the most popular version in our experience, was the worst of the four at 23.87 percent.

These hit rates sit close to what you get by multiplying the single-leg rates, which tells you games in the same week behave almost independently. There is no hidden slate-wide pattern lifting these tickets.

Is 2026 Any Different So Far?

Slightly, and in the over direction. Through Sunday of Week 7, there were 106 games with a favorite. Favorites went over their implied team total 52.38 percent of the time, underdogs 53.33 percent, and full-game overs 51.89 percent. Underdogs are averaging 21.10 points against an implied 20.26.

That is about six weeks of football. At 106 games, the plausible range on the underdog over rate runs from roughly 44 to 63 percent, which comfortably includes the long-run 50 percent. Scoring environments do shift with rule changes and officiating emphasis, but seven weeks is not enough to tell a new normal from a hot start. We would not change a parlay approach on it.

How Should You Use Team Totals Instead?

Team totals are useful as single bets when you have a specific read the full-game number does not capture. A backup quarterback starting for one team, a defense missing two cornerbacks, an offense that has changed play-callers. In those cases the information is about one side, and the team total lets you bet that side without taking a view on the other.

The trouble starts when team totals become parlay filler. Our data says:

1. The two team totals in a game are nearly independent. Pairing them does not exploit a shootout correlation of any real size. 2. No team total structure beat its payout over eleven seasons. Not same-game, not cross-game, not overs, not unders. 3. The one strong-looking split, short favorites going under, is fragile. It came from one of many cuts, uses implied rather than posted lines, and swings by season.

If you want points exposure, a single full-game total or a single team total with a specific reason behind it costs you one vig, not two. Our football betting picks page shows how we decide when a total is worth a bet at all, and our NFL picks against the spread cover the side markets that convert best for our members.

⚔ The Live Edge: Pregame team totals are set on projected game scripts. Live team totals react to what is happening: a starter limping off, a defense that cannot get off the field, a trailing team that has abandoned the run. When the score has not caught up to what the field already shows, a live team total can be mispriced for a few possessions. That is the window our live betting picks are built for, and it is part of why we are limited on all six major U.S. sportsbooks.

Where Does This Leave Football Handicappers?

The best football handicappers treat a parlay as a pricing question first. What does this combination actually hit, and what does it pay? For team totals, eleven seasons answer both questions the same way: it hits less than the payout requires.

That is why our sports handicapping service is built around straight bets and live entries rather than stacked pregame tickets. If you are weighing a subscription, our expert sports picks page explains what that looks like week to week, and the results page shows the verified record. Frequently Asked Questions

How often do NFL favorites go over their team total?

From 2015 through 2025, NFL favorites went over their implied team total 48.76 percent of the time, 1,392 overs against 1,463 unders with 36 pushes in 2,891 regular-season games. The implied total comes from the closing spread and total. That rate is close to a coin flip and well short of the 52.38 percent needed to profit at -110.

Do underdogs beat their team totals in the NFL?

Not by enough to bet blindly. Underdogs went over their implied team total 50.12 percent of the time from 2015 through 2025, 1,435 overs against 1,428 unders. Underdogs averaged 20.21 points against an average implied total of 19.97, a gap of about a quarter point, which standard juice more than erases.

Is a same-game parlay of both team total overs a good bet?

Not at standard pricing. Both teams in the same game went over their implied totals 25.72 percent of the time, a fair price near +289. A two-leg parlay at -110 per leg pays +264, which needs 27.47 percent to break even. The two team totals had a correlation of only 0.035, so the shootout effect is much smaller than many bettors assume.

Are the two team totals in an NFL game correlated?

Only slightly. Comparing how far each team finished above or below its implied total across 2,891 games produced a correlation of 0.035, where zero means no relationship. Both overs hit 25.72 percent against 24.42 percent if fully independent, a difference of about 1.3 points, which is not enough to make the parlay profitable.

Should you bet the under on short favorites' team totals?

Be careful. Favorites of three points or fewer went under their implied team total 55.33 percent of the time from 2015 through 2025. But that result came from one of many splits we tested, it uses implied rather than posted lines, and the favorite over rate swung from 42.7 percent to 55.0 percent between seasons. We would not build a strategy on it alone.

What is the best team total parlay structure?

None of the structures we tested beat a +264 payout. Two favorite team total unders from different games came closest at 26.30 percent, followed by two underdog team total overs at 24.94 percent. Two favorite team total overs, a common choice, hit only 23.87 percent. A single team total with a specific reason behind it costs one vig instead of two.

How do you calculate an implied team total?

Add the point spread to the game total and divide by two for the favorite, then subtract the spread from the total and divide by two for the underdog. A 45.5 total with a 3.5-point spread implies 24.5 points for the favorite and 21 for the underdog. Posted team totals are usually close but are rounded and carry their own juice.
