Favorite and Over Parlays: 11 Years of Real Results

The favorite-and-over same-game parlay is the most popular two-leg NFL ticket, and it has been the worst of the four combinations. From 2015 through 2025, the favorite covering and the game going over happened together in 23.35 percent of 2,792 decided games, below the 25 percent a coin flip would produce and well below the 27.4 percent a standard two-leg parlay needs to break even.

The favorite-and-over same-game parlay is the most popular two-leg NFL ticket, and over the last eleven seasons it has been the worst of the four possible combinations. Across 2,792 decided NFL regular-season games from 2015 through 2025, the favorite covered the closing spread and the game went over the closing total together just 23.35 percent of the time. That is below the 25 percent you would expect from two coin flips, and well below the roughly 27.4 percent a standard two-leg parlay at -110 needs to break even. The correlation the ticket is built on, that a favorite who covers drags the score over, barely exists in the data. The Best Bet on Sports has built a verified $367,520+ in profit across all sportsbooks over more than twenty years, and we test a pairing like this before we treat it as an edge.

The logic behind the ticket sounds airtight. If the better team covers, it probably scored a lot. If it scored a lot, the game probably went over. So the two legs should travel together, and a same-game parlay should be a way to collect on that link.

Sportsbooks believe the link exists too, which is why many of them price correlated same-game legs below what two independent bets would pay. This post checks whether the link is real, how large it is, and whether there is any version of the ticket that has paid.

How Did We Test the Favorite-and-Over Parlay?

We used every NFL regular-season game from 2015 through 2025 in the nflverse game file, which records the closing spread, the closing total and the final score for each game.

Games that closed at a pick'em were dropped because they have no favorite. Any game where either the spread or the total landed exactly on the number was also dropped, because a push turns a two-leg ticket into a single bet and muddies the comparison. That left 2,792 games in which both legs were decided.

For each game we recorded which of the four combinations happened: favorite covers and over, favorite covers and under, underdog covers and over, or underdog covers and under. We then measured the correlation between the favorite's margin against the spread and the game's margin against the total. If the popular logic is right, that correlation should be clearly positive.

How Often Did the Favorite Cover and the Game Go Over?

Less often than any other pairing.

Combination, 2015-2025GamesHit rate
Favorite covers + over65223.35%
Favorite covers + under70725.32%
Underdog covers + over70925.39%
Underdog covers + under72425.93%

Two things drive that bottom line. Favorites covered only 48.67 percent of these games, and overs hit 48.75 percent. Multiply two slightly-below-half numbers together and you get about 23.7 percent before any correlation enters the picture. The favorite-and-over ticket starts behind because both of its legs are, on average, the slightly worse side.

Then the correlation adds almost nothing. Between the favorite's margin against the spread and the game's margin against the total, it was 0.033 across all 2,792 games. On a scale where 0 means unrelated and 1 means lockstep, that is effectively unrelated. The actual favorite-and-over rate of 23.35 percent landed slightly below the 23.73 percent that pure independence predicts.

We resampled the games 3,000 times to put a range around the 23.35 percent. The middle 95 percent of outcomes ran from 21.88 to 25.04 percent. The 27.4 percent breakeven is nowhere inside it.

Why Doesn't the Correlation Show Up?

Because the closing spread and the closing total already carry the information the parlay is trying to exploit.

When the market expects a favorite to win comfortably in a high-scoring game, it raises both the spread and the total. A team favored by 10 in a game totaled at 51 has to score a lot just to reach both numbers. The "favorite covers so it must have scored" logic works against a fixed bar, but the bar moves with the expectation.

There is also a game-script effect that cuts the other way. Favorites who build a big lead often stop throwing and start running the clock, and trailing teams sometimes score late against soft coverage. Both push margins and totals in directions the simple story does not account for. We discussed the mechanics in our same-game parlay strategy for the NFL and the broader theory in correlated parlays explained. This is the first time we have put real results behind it.

Does the Spread Size Change the Answer?

Slightly, and only for the biggest favorites.

Closing spreadGamesFav + overDog + underCorrelation
3 or fewer1,02622.32%26.32%-0.025
3.5 to 6.597223.97%25.51%0.062
7 to 9.545223.89%24.12%-0.004
10 or more34223.98%28.36%0.170

Favorites of 10 points or more were the one group with a correlation worth naming, 0.170. In those games, a cover and an over did tend to arrive together, and so did the mirror image: an underdog cover and an under hit 28.36 percent of the time.

Notice which side of that link actually paid. It was not the favorite-and-over ticket, which still hit under 24 percent, because double-digit favorites went over only 45.91 percent of the time. The correlated outcome that cleared the 27.4 percent bar was the opposite one: the big underdog hanging around in a low-scoring game. That is 342 games, which is a small sample, and we would not build a strategy on it. It does show that the popular direction of the correlated bet is the less profitable one.

Does the Total Matter?

This is where the most interesting split showed up.

Big favorites (7+) by totalGamesFav + overFav + underDog + under
Total 43.5 or lower30327.06%22.77%23.43%
Total 47.5 or higher23518.30%28.94%28.09%

When a big favorite played in a game with a low total, the favorite-and-over pairing hit 27.06 percent, its best showing anywhere in the study and almost exactly at the two-leg breakeven. When a big favorite played in a high-total game, the same ticket hit 18.30 percent, the worst result in the study.

The likely explanation is that high totals with big spreads ask for two things at once: a blowout and a shootout. Low totals ask for less. A favorite that covers 7.5 in a game totaled at 41.5 only needs a modest final score to push the total over as well.

Before anyone turns that into a rule, look at the sizes. The two groups contain 303 and 235 games. A difference of nine points of hit rate in groups that small is large enough to notice and not large enough to trust. We found it by cutting the data more than one way, which is how most published "angles" are built.

Has It Been Consistent Year to Year?

No. The favorite-and-over pairing hit as low as 20.72 percent in 2020 and as high as 29.06 percent in 2024. It cleared the 27.4 percent breakeven in two of eleven seasons, 2016 and 2024. In the other nine, a bettor making that pairing every week at standard parlay prices would have lost money.

SeasonFav + over hit rate
201628.11%
202020.72%
202220.93%
202429.06%
202524.35%
2015-202523.35%

Through Week 4 of the 2026 season and Thursday night's Week 5 opener, the four combinations have split 11 favorite-and-over, 16 favorite-and-under, 18 underdog-and-over and 15 underdog-and-under in 60 decided games. Thursday's game was a clean example of the pattern: Dallas closed as a 9.5-point favorite against Tampa Bay at a total of 49.5, and the Buccaneers won 24-16. Underdog covered, game stayed under.

What Does a Same-Game Parlay Have to Hit to Pay?

This is the part most bettors skip. Two independent -110 legs pay about +264 as a standard parlay, which requires a 27.4 percent hit rate to break even. Same-game parlays on correlated legs often pay less than that, because the book prices the link it assumes exists. A lower payout means a higher breakeven.

PayoutBreakeven hit rate
+30025.0%
+264 (two -110 legs)27.4%
+25028.6%
+23030.3%

The favorite-and-over pairing hit 23.35 percent. Even its best subset in this study, big favorites with low totals, reached 27.06 percent. At a typical same-game price, neither is close. Check the payout on any ticket you build against this table before you place it.

What About This Sunday's Big Favorites?

As of Friday morning, the nflverse file lists two Week 5 favorites of 7 points or more for Sunday: Jacksonville laying 7.5 against Philadelphia in London with a total of 41.5 (some books show the Jaguars at 6.5 or 7 and the total at 42.5), and Houston laying 7.5 at Tennessee with a total of 37.5. Both fall in the low-total group, the one cell where the favorite-and-over pairing came close to breaking even.

We are not recommending either ticket. "Close to breakeven in a 303-game subset" is not an edge. Whether either favorite is mispriced depends on the matchup, injuries and where the numbers move, which is what NFL picks against the spread should be built on. Our NFL same-game parlay page covers how we think about multi-leg tickets in a single game.

⚔ The Live Edge: A pregame same-game parlay locks in a guess about game script before the first snap. In-game, the script is visible. If a favorite is up 14 at halftime and running the ball, the total is being re-priced in front of you, and the correlation this study could not find in pregame numbers is sometimes sitting in the live board for a few minutes. That is where we work, and it is a large part of why we are limited on all six major U.S. sportsbooks.

To be precise about that callout: this study uses closing pregame lines and final scores. It contains no in-game prices, so it cannot measure whether live correlated bets are easier to beat. That is structural reasoning, not a finding from these 2,792 games.

How Should You Use This?

Treat the favorite-and-over ticket as two bets you would have to like separately, not as one bet with a built-in bonus. The data says the bonus is mostly missing. If you would not bet the favorite against the spread by itself, and you would not bet the over by itself, pairing them does not create value.

That is the same conclusion we reached in our earlier real-results studies on heavy-favorite moneyline parlays and divisional underdog parlays: parlays multiply whatever edge the legs have, and they multiply the variance with it. Our parlay picks page explains when we think a multi-leg ticket earns its place, and the football betting picks page shows how we work the weekly NFL slate. If you want the full board, see our NFL picks, and every graded play is on our results page.

Where This Analysis Stops

Four limits.

This is NFL regular season only, 2015 through 2025, graded against closing numbers. Many bettors build same-game parlays earlier in the week at different lines.

We graded legs against the spread and total, not against alternate lines or player props, which are the legs most same-game parlays actually use.

The subsets by spread size and total contain a few hundred games each. They describe what happened. They do not promise it will repeat.

And we did not have historical same-game parlay prices, only the standard parlay math. Actual same-game payouts vary by book and by day, which is why the breakeven table matters more than any single price we could quote.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a favorite and over same-game parlay a good bet?

Historically, no. From 2015 through 2025, the NFL favorite covered and the game went over together in 23.35 percent of 2,792 decided games. A standard two-leg parlay at -110 needs about 27.4 percent to break even, and same-game parlays often pay less, which raises the bar further.

Do NFL favorites who cover usually go over the total?

Not in a way you can bet. The correlation between the favorite's margin against the spread and the game's margin against the total was 0.033 over eleven seasons, which is effectively zero. The closing spread and total already account for the expectation that a dominant favorite scores more.

Which same-game parlay combination hits most often in the NFL?

Underdog covers plus under hit most often from 2015 through 2025, at 25.93 percent of decided games. Favorite plus under hit 25.32 percent, underdog plus over 25.39 percent, and favorite plus over 23.35 percent. None reached the 27.4 percent breakeven of a standard two-leg parlay.

Is there any spread size where favorite and over works?

Not reliably. Double-digit favorites showed the strongest link between covering and the over, but the pairing still hit only 23.98 percent because those games went over just 45.91 percent of the time. The correlated outcome that paid in that group was the opposite one, underdog plus under, at 28.36 percent in 342 games.

Does a low total help the favorite and over parlay?

In this study, yes, though the sample is small. Favorites of 7 or more in games totaled 43.5 or lower hit favorite plus over 27.06 percent of the time across 303 games. In games totaled 47.5 or higher, the same pairing hit only 18.30 percent across 235 games.

What hit rate does a same-game parlay need to be profitable?

It depends on the payout. A ticket paying +264 needs 27.4 percent, +250 needs 28.6 percent, and +230 needs 30.3 percent. Because books often reduce same-game payouts for legs they consider correlated, the breakeven on a same-game parlay is usually higher than on a standard two-leg parlay.

How has favorite and over done in 2026?

Through Week 4 and Thursday's Week 5 game, favorite plus over has hit in 11 of 60 decided NFL games, the fewest of the four combinations. Underdog plus over has hit 18 times. Sixty games is a small sample, and the pairing has ranged from 20.72 to 29.06 percent in full seasons since 2015.
