Fourth-Quarter Lead Parlays: How Often Leaders Hold

NFL teams leading by 7 to 13 points after three quarters won 85.73 percent of the time from 2015 through 2025, across 918 regular-season games. That makes the fair live moneyline about -600 per leg. Two such leaders in the same week both held on 72.66 percent of the time, a fair price near -266, which is why live parlays of leaders pay so little and carry real risk.
A live NFL parlay built from teams leading after three quarters pays far less than it looks like it should, because those leaders are already priced close to their true odds. From 2015 through 2025, teams leading by 7 to 13 points entering the fourth quarter won 85.73 percent of 918 regular-season games, which works out to a fair moneyline near -600. Two of those leaders in the same week both held on 72.66 percent of the time, a fair two-leg price of about -266. The Best Bet on Sports has built a verified $367,520+ in profit across all sportsbooks over more than twenty years, and that is the math we start from before any fourth-quarter bet.
Every Sunday around 3:30 p.m. Eastern, the same ticket gets built on thousands of phones. The early games are in the fourth quarter, a few teams are up by a touchdown or more, and the live moneylines on those leaders look short but safe. String two or three together, the thinking goes, and you get a better price on outcomes that are close to settled.
This post measures how settled they really are. It uses every regular-season game since 2015 to show how often a fourth-quarter lead of each size holds up, what those leads should cost, and why the two-leg and three-leg versions of this ticket rarely deliver the value bettors expect.
How Did We Measure Fourth-Quarter Leads?
We used nflverse play-by-play data for every NFL regular-season game from 2015 through 2025. For each game, we recorded the score on the last play of the third quarter and the final result. Of 2,895 games, 161 were tied after three quarters and were set aside, leaving 2,734 games with a leader entering the fourth.
A lead "held" if the leading team won the game, including in overtime. Ties counted as a failed hold, because a live moneyline ticket does not cash on a tie.
The play-by-play file also carries a win probability for every snap from a model that blends the score, time, field position and the pregame point spread. We took that number at the first play of the fourth quarter as a stand-in for the market's opinion. Sportsbooks do not publish their live odds history, so we cannot grade real live prices. The model is the closest public proxy for what a live board believes, before the book adds its margin.
For the parlay tests, we paired every qualifying leader with every other qualifying leader from the same season and week. Then we resampled whole weeks 2,000 times to get a range, because games played on the same Sunday are not fully independent.
How Often Does a Team Leading After Three Quarters Win?
Here is the full table. "Fair price" is the moneyline that would break even at the historical hold rate, with no vig.
| Lead after 3 quarters | Games | Leader won | Model expected | Fair price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 to 3 points | 496 | 60.28% | 61.72% | -152 |
| 4 to 6 points | 393 | 73.03% | 71.95% | -271 |
| 7 to 8 points | 401 | 81.30% | 80.61% | -435 |
| 9 to 10 points | 253 | 85.38% | 85.47% | -584 |
| 11 to 13 points | 264 | 92.80% | 90.90% | -1289 |
| 14 to 16 points | 304 | 93.42% | 94.81% | -1420 |
| 17 to 20 points | 265 | 96.98% | 97.98% | -3213 |
| 21 or more | 358 | 99.44% | 99.73% | -17800 |
The first thing to notice is the gap between the "Leader won" and "Model expected" columns. Across most bands it is about a point either way. Over eleven seasons, the win probability on the board at the start of the fourth quarter has been close to what actually happened.
That is the central problem with leader parlays. A bet only makes money when the price is wrong, and these prices have mostly been right.
The jump from 8 to 9 points and from 13 to 14 points matters in practice. A 7- or 8-point lead is one possession with a two-point try. A 9- to 13-point lead takes two scores. Leaders at 7 to 8 held 81.30 percent of the time, and leaders at 11 to 13 held 92.80 percent.
Where Did the Model Miss?
There were three places where the results drifted from the model. None is large, but each one points the same way a careful live bettor would expect.
Short leads by favorites held less often than expected. Pregame favorites leading by 1 to 3 points after three quarters won 174 of 260 games, or 66.9 percent. The model put them at 70.3 percent. That is the spot where a bettor is most tempted to say "the better team is ahead, it's over."
Big leads were slightly overrated. Teams up 14 or more after three quarters won 96.76 percent of 927 games. The model expected 97.62 percent. A gap under one point sounds trivial, but at those prices it is the whole margin. A leg priced at -2000 needs to win 95.2 percent of the time to break even, and a single extra collapse in every 100 games wipes out the edge you thought you had.
Underdogs leading by 7 to 8 held slightly more often than expected. They won 74.0 percent of 154 games, against a model figure of 71.8 percent. That is inside normal noise on a sample this size, so we treat it as a lean, not a rule.
What Does a Two-Leg Fourth-Quarter Lead Parlay Return?
Here is what happened when leaders from the same week were paired.
| Two-leg ticket (same week) | Tickets | Both held | Model expected | Fair parlay price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Two leaders up 1 to 3 | 583 | 34.82% | 38.01% | +187 |
| Two leaders up 4 to 6 | 389 | 52.19% | 52.05% | -109 |
| Two leaders up 7 to 13 | 2,063 | 72.66% | 71.98% | -266 |
| Two leaders up 14 or more | 2,085 | 93.09% | 95.26% | -1348 |
The 7-to-13 pairs, the most popular version of this ticket, came in almost exactly where the model expected. The week-level resampling put the true hit rate somewhere between 68.2 and 76.9 percent. A fair two-leg price is about -266. After a sportsbook adds its parlay margin, a bettor is usually offered something worse.
The two ends of the table are where the parlay hurt. Pairs of 1-to-3-point leaders hit 34.82 percent against a model expectation of 38.01 percent. Pairs of 14-plus leaders hit 93.09 percent against 95.26 percent. In both cases, the parlay compounded a small mispricing into a larger one.
We cover the general version of that problem in why most parlays lose. A parlay does not create value. It multiplies whatever value each leg already has, positive or negative.
What About Three-Leg Live Parlays?
Three leaders up 7 to 13 in the same week, every possible combination, produced 2,898 tickets. All three held 60.94 percent of the time, a fair price near -156.
That number is worth sitting with. A three-leg ticket built entirely from "two-score games in the fourth quarter" still lost about four times in ten. Bettors remember the tickets that cashed at -150 and forget the ones a single backdoor touchdown and onside kick took down. It is the same thinking behind our guide on how to hedge a live parlay mid-game: the exposure on these tickets is larger than the payout suggests.
Has 2026 Been Different?
So far, yes, and in the direction that hurts leader parlays.
Through Monday night of Week 6, teams leading by 7 to 13 points after three quarters have won 24 of 33 games, a 72.7 percent hold rate. The model expected about 83.8 percent, or roughly 28 wins. That is about four extra collapses in six weeks.
Several came on the same Sunday. In Week 6, Tampa Bay led Pittsburgh 16-3 after three quarters and lost by 7. Indianapolis led Tennessee 13-6 and lost by 6. Cleveland trailed Baltimore 10-3 and came back to win by 3. In Week 2, Baltimore led New Orleans 17-9 entering the fourth and lost by 7.
Thirty-three games is a small sample, and one hot stretch does not overturn eleven seasons. Here is how the 7-to-13 band held up by season, which shows how much a single year can swing:
| Season | Games | Leader won |
|---|---|---|
| 2015 | 70 | 87.1% |
| 2017 | 82 | 89.0% |
| 2019 | 82 | 91.5% |
| 2022 | 84 | 81.0% |
| 2024 | 88 | 88.6% |
| 2025 | 86 | 83.7% |
| 2026 (through Week 6) | 33 | 72.7% |
The lowest full season in the sample was 2022 at 81.0 percent. 2026 is well below that so far, which is a reason for caution on leader parlays this fall, not a reason to fade every leader.
How Should You Bet Fourth-Quarter Leaders?
The numbers suggest a few practical rules.
Know the fair price before you look at the board. A 7-point lead entering the fourth is worth about -435 at its historical rate. If the live line is -700, the market is charging a premium for comfort. If it is -350, someone is overreacting to a drive.
Respect the one-score line. The biggest change in hold rate comes between 8 and 9 points. A team up 8 with the ball is in a very different spot than a team up 8 with the opponent driving, and a static number cannot tell those apart.
Skip short-lead favorite parlays. Pairs of 1-to-3-point leaders lost the most against expectation, and favorites up by a field goal were the leg that underperformed most.
Do not treat huge leads as cash. Legs at -1500 and beyond carry most of their risk in rare collapses. Adding them to a parlay to "juice" the price barely moves the payout and adds a real chance of losing the whole ticket.
Bet the situation, not the score. Our parlay picks and football betting picks use the score as a starting point, not as the reason for the bet.
For the halftime version of this question, see our study of the halftime-lead-and-win parlay, which looks at the same idea two quarters earlier, when far more of the game is left to play.
What Are the Limits of This Study?
We did not have actual sportsbook live odds. The model win probability is a reasonable proxy for a live board before the book's margin, but real prices vary by book and by second. A bettor who catches a stale number has a different result than these tables show.
We measured the score at the end of the third quarter, not possession, field position or timeouts. Those details move live prices sharply and are folded into the model figure but not into the hold rates themselves.
We graded regular-season games only, and the 2026 figures are a partial season. Every number here describes what happened, not what is promised to repeat.

Frequently Asked Questions
How often does an NFL team leading after three quarters win?
It depends on the size of the lead. From 2015 through 2025, teams leading by 1 to 3 points after three quarters won 60.28 percent of the time, teams up 7 to 8 won 81.30 percent, teams up 11 to 13 won 92.80 percent, and teams up 21 or more won 99.44 percent. Across leads of 7 to 13 points, leaders won 85.73 percent of 918 games.
Is a live parlay of fourth-quarter leaders a good bet?
Usually not. The win probabilities on the board at the start of the fourth quarter have tracked actual results closely, so the legs are priced near fair before the sportsbook adds its margin. Two leaders up 7 to 13 points both held 72.66 percent of the time from 2015 through 2025, a fair price near -266, and the model expected 71.98 percent.
What is the fair live moneyline for a 7-point fourth-quarter lead?
About -435. Teams leading by 7 or 8 points after three quarters won 81.30 percent of 401 regular-season games from 2015 through 2025. A moneyline of -435 breaks even at that rate with no vig. Possession, field position and timeouts can move the real price well above or below that figure.
How often do two-score fourth-quarter leads blow up?
Rarely, but not rarely enough to treat as settled. Teams leading by 9 to 13 points entering the fourth quarter won about 89 percent of the time from 2015 through 2025. Three such leaders in a three-leg parlay, using leads of 7 to 13 points, all held only 60.94 percent of the time across 2,898 same-week combinations.
Are big fourth-quarter leads overpriced in live betting?
Slightly. Teams up 14 or more after three quarters won 96.76 percent of 927 games from 2015 through 2025, while the win probability model expected 97.62 percent. At prices beyond -1500, that gap is enough to erase the value of the leg. Pairs of 14-plus leaders hit 93.09 percent against a model figure of 95.26 percent.
Have fourth-quarter leads held up in 2026?
Not as well as usual. Through Monday night of Week 6 of the 2026 season, teams leading by 7 to 13 points after three quarters won 24 of 33 games, a 72.7 percent rate, against a model expectation near 83.8 percent. The lowest full season from 2015 through 2025 was 81.0 percent, in 2022.
Which fourth-quarter leads performed worst against expectations?
Short leads held by favorites. Pregame favorites leading by 1 to 3 points after three quarters won 66.9 percent of 260 games from 2015 through 2025, while the model expected 70.3 percent. Two-leg parlays of 1-to-3-point leaders hit 34.82 percent against an expected 38.01 percent, the largest shortfall of any band tested.
