NFL Highest-Scoring Half, Tested

The second half is not usually the highest-scoring half in the NFL. Across 4,174 regular-season games from 2010 through 2025, the second half outscored the first only 47.05 percent of the time with overtime counted, while the first half won 49.28 percent and 3.67 percent tied. Halves average almost the same points, so the bet only has value at a plus price.

The second half is not usually the highest-scoring half of an NFL game. Across 4,174 regular-season games from 2010 through 2025, the second half outscored the first only 47.05 percent of the time, even with overtime counted toward the second half. The first half won 49.28 percent of the time and the halves tied 3.67 percent of the time. First halves averaged 22.82 points and second halves 22.65, so a "second half" leg needs a plus price to break even. The Best Bet on Sports has built a verified $367,520+ in profit across all sportsbooks over more than twenty years by testing betting rules like this before using them.

"Highest-scoring half" is one of the most common NFL game props, and it shows up in parlays and same-game parlays every Sunday. Most bettors default to the second half. The reasoning sounds solid: teams adjust at halftime, trailing teams throw more, the clock rules change in the last two minutes, and overtime, where a book counts it, only adds points to the back half.

We tested it with play-by-play data and found the opposite of what most bettors believe.

How Did We Test the Highest-Scoring Half?

We used the nflverse play-by-play files for every regular-season game from 2010 through 2025, a total of 4,174 games. For each game we took the combined score at the end of the second quarter and the final score, and checked the final against the nflverse game file. The second half is everything after halftime.

Sportsbooks handle overtime differently, so we graded the bet both ways. With overtime counted, the second half includes overtime points. With regulation only, it does not. Most U.S. books post the market as three outcomes: first half, second half, or tie. On a three-way market a tie loses both half bets, and that is how we graded it. Check your book's house rules before betting, because the overtime rule changes the answer.

How Often Is the Second Half the Highest-Scoring Half?

Less than half the time, under either rule.

Rule, 2010-2025 (4,174 games)Second half higherFirst half higherTie
Overtime counts toward second half47.05%49.28%3.67%
Regulation only45.62%49.62%4.77%

The average points were nearly even: 22.82 in the first half, 22.39 in the second half of regulation, and 22.65 with overtime added. There were 246 overtime games in the sample, and they are the only reason the second half gets close.

A bet that wins 47.05 percent of the time loses money at even money (break-even 50.00 percent) and loses more at standard -110 pricing (break-even 52.38 percent). At even money, the second half returned -5.89 percent per dollar risked over the 16 seasons. At -110 the loss grows to -10.17 percent, and at -120 to -13.74 percent.

Why Doesn't the Second Half Score More?

Three things pull second-half scoring down, and they cancel the halftime adjustments people expect to help.

Leading teams slow the game. A team ahead by two scores runs the ball, stays in bounds and lets the clock run. That shortens the second half by possessions, not by minutes.

Blowouts end early. In games where one team led by 18 or more at halftime, the second half was higher-scoring only 24.56 percent of the time. Starters come out, both teams play conservatively, and the final 30 minutes become a formality.

The first half has its own two-minute drill. Teams score before halftime as aggressively as they do at the end of the game. Both halves end with a hurry-up, so that advantage is not unique to the second half.

Does the Pregame Spread or Total Change the Answer?

The spread changes it more than the total does.

Closing spread, 2010-2025GamesSecond half higherFirst half higherTie
0 to 2.5 points94747.94%48.47%3.59%

7 to 9.5 points69742.61%54.23%3.16%
10 points or more51244.34%51.17%4.49%

Games with a spread of 3 to 6.5 points were the only band where the second half won more often than the first, and only by 1.4 percentage points. Games with a spread of 7 or more leaned toward the first half, which fits the blowout explanation: a favorite that builds a lead early stops pushing late.

Before anyone builds a rule from the 7 to 9.5 row, note that it is one of four bands tested, and the plausible range on 697 games runs about 3.7 points either way. It points in a sensible direction, but we do not bet it as a standalone angle.

48 to 50.563346.76%49.13%4.11%
51 or higher40946.21%51.34%2.44%

The total barely matters. The second half trailed the first in every band.

Has the Second Half Ever Been the Better Bet?

In a few seasons, yes, but not for long. With overtime counted, the second half won more often than the first in only three of the 16 seasons: 2015 (50.39 percent), 2021 (51.10 percent) and 2025 (50.00 percent, against 46.32 percent for the first half). The worst season was 2023, when the second half was higher only 44.49 percent of the time.

2022-20251,08746.37%49.95%22.6822.11

No era turned the second half into a winning bet. If anything, the last four seasons made it slightly worse.

How Is 2026 Going So Far?

Through the first 108 regular-season games of 2026, which includes Thursday night of Week 8, the second half has been higher in 55 games, the first half in 47, and six have tied. That is 50.93 percent for the second half, with second halves averaging 23.70 points against 22.33 in the first. It is a small edge in a small sample, about one-fortieth of the historical data. Do not read it as a new trend.

How Does the Highest-Scoring Half Work in a Parlay?

Badly, if you are using the second half as a default leg. Every leg compounds the shortfall.

Parlay of "second half higher" legsHit rate, 2010-2025Break-even at even-money legs
1 leg47.05%50.00%
2 legs22.14%25.00%
3 legs10.42%12.50%
4 legs4.90%6.25%

The 2-leg figure is not just multiplication. We built all 29,521 two-game combinations from games played in the same week and the pair hit 22.17 percent, almost exactly the 22.14 percent the single-leg rate predicts. Second-half scoring in one game tells you nothing about another game that day.

At even-money legs, a 2-leg ticket would have returned about -11.4 percent and a 3-leg ticket about -16.6 percent. This is the same compounding problem we found with first-quarter parlays, where ties quietly eat a large share of tickets. The tie outcome here is smaller, 3.67 percent, but it still loses every half bet.

Is the Highest-Scoring Half Correlated With the Over?

Yes, modestly, which matters for same-game parlays. In games that went over the closing total, the second half was higher 51.20 percent of the time. In games that went under, it was higher only 42.85 percent of the time. The correlation between the two outcomes was 0.08.

"Over and second half higher" hit together in 25.13 percent of games, compared with 23.10 percent if the two were unrelated. "Under and first half higher" hit together in 26.21 percent, compared with 24.61 percent. Those are real but small, and a same-game parlay price usually already charges for correlation, as our NFL same-game parlay guide explains. Our all-overs correlation study covers why stacking related legs across a slate does less than people think.

What Does Halftime Tell You About the Second Half?

A lot, and this is where the bet becomes useful. The most important finding in the data is how stable second-half scoring is. No matter what happened in the first half, the second half averaged between 21 and 24 points.

First-half pointsGamesSecond half higherFirst half higherAverage second-half points
0 to 1368985.63%10.30%21.26

28 to 3472020.69%77.50%23.02
35 or more4147.00%91.55%23.75

A 10-point first half did not predict a slow second half, and a 38-point first half did not predict a shootout after halftime. The second half came out close to 22 or 23 points either way. Pregame, that means the highest-scoring half is close to a coin flip with a small first-half lean. At halftime, it becomes a question of one number: how many points did the first half produce?

The halftime margin matters too. When the game was within three points at halftime, the second half was higher 54.44 percent of the time. When one team led by 18 or more, it was higher only 24.56 percent of the time.

Live books know this too, and second-half lines adjust to the first-half score. The value is in reading why a first half was high or low: a 30-point first half built on two defensive touchdowns and a short field is different from one built on long drives, even though the scoreboard looks the same. Our second-half spread parlay study and halftime lead-and-win study show the same pattern from the side of the spread and moneyline.

⚔ The Live Edge: The pregame "second half higher" leg is a 47 percent bet. The halftime version is a different bet entirely, because the first-half score and the way it was scored are now known. Second-half scoring stays near 22 to 23 points almost every week, so the edge comes from spotting when a first half was inflated or held down by plays that will not repeat. That is the kind of read our live betting picks are built on, and it is part of why we are limited on all six major U.S. sportsbooks.

What Does This Mean When You Buy Football Picks?

It means a pick service that adds "second half higher" to every Sunday parlay is giving away about 3 points of win rate before the games start. Defaults like this are easy to sell because they sound like football knowledge. They are also easy to test, and this one fails.

Our football betting picks and NFL picks against the spread are built on what teams are actually doing, and we post every result on our results page. If you are comparing NFL expert picks from different services, ask which props each one has tested against real outcomes. Our football handicappers page explains how we approach the weekly card. With the NBA season under way, our basketball handicappers page shows how the same testing applies to quarter and half markets in basketball.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which half scores more points in the NFL?

Neither by much, but the first half wins slightly more often. From 2010 through 2025, the first half was higher-scoring in 49.28 percent of 4,174 regular-season games and the second half in 47.05 percent, with overtime counted toward the second half. First halves averaged 22.82 points and second halves 22.65.

Is "second half higher" a good NFL bet?

Not as a default. It won 47.05 percent of the time with overtime counted and 45.62 percent in regulation only. At even money that returned -5.89 percent per dollar, and at -110 it returned -10.17 percent. It needs a plus price, or a specific game read, to be worth betting.

Does overtime count in the highest-scoring half bet?

At many U.S. sportsbooks, overtime points count toward the second half, but house rules vary. That rule matters: with overtime counted, the second half was higher 47.05 percent of the time; in regulation only, 45.62 percent. Check your book's rules before betting.

How often do NFL halves end tied in scoring?

From 2010 through 2025, the first and second halves produced the same number of points in 3.67 percent of games with overtime counted and 4.77 percent in regulation only. On a three-way market, a tie loses both the first-half and second-half bets.

Should I put the highest-scoring half in a parlay?

Only if you have a reason beyond the default. A 2-leg parlay of "second half higher" legs hit 22.14 percent of the time against a 25.00 percent break-even at even-money legs, and a 3-leg parlay hit 10.42 percent against 12.50 percent. Each leg compounds the shortfall.

Is the highest-scoring half correlated with the over?

Slightly. When a game went over the closing total, the second half was higher 51.20 percent of the time, versus 42.85 percent when it went under. The correlation was 0.08, so the two outcomes are related but far from a pair that moves together.

Does the first-half score predict second-half scoring?

Almost not at all. From 2010 through 2025, second halves averaged between 21.26 and 23.75 points whether the first half produced 13 points or 35. That stability is why the halftime score, not a pregame lean, decides the highest-scoring half.
