The primetime under parlay, betting the under in every Thursday, Sunday and Monday night NFL game of a week, cashed in 30 of 180 weeks from 2015 through 2025. Straight primetime unders went 306-253-7, a 54.74 percent hit rate. But the parlay went 0-for-16 in 2018, lost money in five of eleven seasons, once went seventeen weeks without a winner, and is 0-for-4 so far in 2026.

The primetime under parlay, putting the under in every Thursday, Sunday and Monday night NFL game of a week onto one ticket, cashed in 30 of 180 weeks from 2015 through 2025, and the trend underneath it is one of the few that has actually held up: straight primetime unders went 306-253-7 against the closing total, a 54.74 percent hit rate. But the parlay version went 0-for-16 in 2018, lost money in five of eleven seasons, once went seventeen straight weeks without a winner, and is 0-for-4 so far in 2026. The Best Bet on Sports has built a verified $367,520+ in profit across all sportsbooks over more than twenty years, and this is exactly the kind of ticket we test before we ever talk about it.

Every football Tuesday someone posts the same idea. Night games are slower, defenses are sharper under the lights, the public bets overs on national television, so take the under in all three primetime games and parlay them for a payout around 6-to-1.

Unlike most viral betting angles, part of this one is true. The part that gets left out is what happens when you put it on a single ticket.

How Did We Test the Primetime Under Parlay?

We used the nflverse game file for every NFL regular-season game from 2015 through 2025, 2,895 games with a closing total, closing under price and final score. A game counted as primetime if it kicked off at 7 p.m. Eastern or later on a Thursday, Sunday or Monday. That gave 566 primetime games, and 180 weeks with at least two of them on the board.

Each under was graded against the closing total and paid at the closing under price recorded in the file, not at a flat -110. For the parlay, every primetime under in a given week went on one ticket. If a leg pushed, it was removed and the ticket paid on the remaining legs, which is how most U.S. sportsbooks settle a pushed leg.

This is a test of the exact ticket people post, built from the prices that were really available at close.

Do Primetime NFL Games Really Go Under?

More often than not, yes.

SlotGamesUnder-over-pushUnder rateReturn per $100 at closing prices
Sunday Night Football195107-84-456.02%+$8.67
Monday Night Football198109-87-255.61%+$7.73

All primetime566306-253-754.74%+$6.25
Every other game2,3291,161-1,149-1950.26%-$2.50

Primetime closing totals averaged 46.07 points and the games averaged 45.39. Every other game ran the opposite way, closing at 44.97 and landing at 45.64. That is a gap of about 1.4 points between how night games and day games beat their numbers, and it has been fairly persistent: 53.23 percent unders from 2015 through 2019 and 55.95 percent from 2020 through 2025.

What makes this unusual is that the market did not lean against it. The no-vig under probability implied by closing primetime prices averaged 49.88 percent, almost exactly a coin flip. The books were pricing primetime unders like any other total while the unders kept landing more than half the time.

Before anyone runs to the window, three cautions belong right next to that table.

First, the bootstrap 95 percent range on the straight-bet return runs from -1.65 percent to +14.41 percent. That range includes losing money. It is a real-looking edge, not a proven one.

Second, the slicing has to be read honestly. Weeks 1 through 9 ran 56.51 percent and Weeks 10 onward ran 52.46 percent. Games closing at 41.5 or lower went under only 46.59 percent of the time across 88 games and lost $9.09 per $100. Any one of those splits could be noise, and the more splits you look at, the more noise you find.

Third, the most recent two seasons were close to flat: 48.15 percent in 2024 and 51.79 percent in 2025.

What Happens When You Parlay Every Primetime Under?

The edge gets bigger on paper and much harder to live with.

TicketWeeksWinning weeksHit rateReturn per $100
Every week, all primetime unders1803016.67%+$26.04
Three-leg weeks only1422416.90%+$22.97
Four-leg weeks only24312.50%+$70.89
Two-leg weeks only13323.08%-$13.46

A typical three-leg ticket paid about 6.3-to-1, which implies a hit rate of roughly 13.6 percent. It actually hit 16.90 percent. That three-point gap is what a 54-55 percent single-game edge looks like when you multiply it across three legs, and over eleven seasons it added up to a profit.

Now the bootstrap range on the parlay return: -15.98 percent to +71.24 percent. The parlay has a higher average than the straight bets and a range almost five times as wide. That is the honest trade, and it is the same one we found in our real results for heavy-favorite parlays: a parlay never creates an edge, it only magnifies whatever is underneath, including the noise.

What Did This Parlay Feel Like Season by Season?

This is the table nobody posts.

Five losing seasons out of eleven. A bettor who started this ticket in 2015 was down about 26 units after four years, including a season in which it never cashed once. The longest losing streak across the whole sample was seventeen consecutive weeks, more than a full season of Tuesdays spent watching a ticket die.

The three seasons from 2021 through 2023 produced 60.10 units, more than the entire eleven-year profit of 46.87. The other eight seasons combined lost 13.23 units. A trend that depends on a three-year run is a trend you should expect to see disappear.

And 2026 has started the way 2018 did. Through four weeks, primetime games have gone 4 unders and 8 overs, including Detroit and Buffalo combining for 72 points against a 54.5 total and Atlanta and New Orleans going for 69 against 47.5 on Monday night. The weekly ticket is 0-for-4.

Why Might Primetime Games Go Under?

The usual explanations are short-week preparation on Thursdays, more conservative play-calling in national-television games, and a public betting market that leans toward overs in the games it is most likely to watch. Each of those is plausible, and none of them is proven by a table of final scores.

The more important fact is that everybody has heard them. The primetime under is one of the most widely repeated totals angles in football, and an angle that every bettor knows about tends to get priced. The flat 2024 and 2025 seasons may be the beginning of exactly that, or they may be two ordinary bad years. Eleven seasons cannot tell you which, and anyone who says otherwise is selling certainty the data does not contain.

⚔ The Live Edge: A pregame primetime under is a bet on a number set before anyone has seen how the game is being played. By the second quarter of a night game you know whether both offenses are moving, whether the play-calling is conservative and whether the total is drifting the wrong way, and the live market re-prices all of it in seconds. That in-game window is where our work happens, and it is a large part of why we ended up limited on all six major U.S. sportsbooks.

To be precise about that callout: this study uses closing totals and final scores only. It contains no in-game prices, so it cannot measure whether live primetime totals are easier to beat. That argument is structural reasoning, not a finding from these 566 games.

Should You Bet the Primetime Under Parlay?

If you believe the trend, bet it straight.

A straight under at a fair price carries the whole edge with a fraction of the variance. The parlay adds nothing but the possibility of a 0-for-16 season, and if the trend has faded, it loses faster than the straight bets do. The same logic sits behind our guide to how many legs a parlay should have: every added leg multiplies the hold along with the edge.

If you do play it as a parlay, size it as a long-shot ticket, one you can lose seventeen weeks in a row without changing anything else you bet. Do not chase it in a year like 2026 where the first month has gone the wrong way, and do not stack it with your other primetime bets, because an over-heavy night will take all of them down together. Our post on the first-half over, full-game under parlay covers how totals legs inside the same game interact.

For weekly totals analysis, our NFL over under picks page is the home base, and the slot-specific boards are on Sunday Night Football picks and Monday Night Football picks. If you would rather follow a full card than build your own tickets, football betting picks and daily sports betting picks explain what arrives and when, and every graded result is on the results page.

Where This Analysis Stops

Four limits.

This is regular-season NFL only, 2015 through 2025, graded at closing prices. Opening totals can differ, and a bettor who got a better number early in the week would have done somewhat better than these figures.

Primetime was defined by kickoff time and weekday. Saturday night games late in the season and international morning games were left out, and Christmas and Thanksgiving night games were counted only if they landed on a Thursday, Sunday or Monday.

Pushed legs were removed from the parlay rather than graded as losses. A book that settles pushes differently would change a handful of weeks.

And the sample is 566 games. A real three-to-five-point edge and a lucky streak that is now ending can produce the same table over eleven seasons. The flat last two years are the reason to treat this as an interesting trend rather than a reliable one.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do NFL primetime games go under the total?

More often than not over the last eleven seasons. From 2015 through 2025, Thursday, Sunday and Monday night games went 306-253-7 to the under against the closing total, a 54.74 percent hit rate, compared with 50.26 percent for every other game. The range of plausible returns still includes losing money, and 2024 and 2025 were close to even.

What is a primetime under parlay?

It is a single ticket that takes the under in every primetime NFL game in a week, usually the Thursday, Sunday and Monday night games. A typical three-leg version pays about 6.3-to-1. From 2015 through 2025 it cashed in 30 of 180 weeks, a 16.67 percent hit rate.

Has the primetime under parlay made money?

Over eleven seasons, yes: about 46.87 units on 180 one-unit tickets. But it lost money in five of those seasons, went 0-for-16 in 2018, once went seventeen weeks without a winner, and the three seasons from 2021 through 2023 earned more than its entire eleven-year profit. The plausible range on its return runs from about -16 percent to +71 percent.

Is it better to bet primetime unders straight or in a parlay?

Straight. A straight under carries the same per-game edge with far less variance. The parlay only multiplies the edge, the bookmaker's hold and the noise together, so a modest single-game advantage turns into a ticket that can lose for an entire season.

Which primetime slot has gone under most often?

Sunday Night Football, at 107-84-4 to the under from 2015 through 2025, or 56.02 percent. Monday night was 109-87-2, or 55.61 percent. Thursday night was the weakest at 90-82-1, or 52.33 percent, which barely clears the break-even rate at standard pricing.

How have primetime unders done in 2026?

Badly so far. Through Week 4 of the 2026 season, the twelve primetime games went 4 unders and 8 overs, and the weekly all-unders parlay has not cashed once. Four weeks is far too small a sample to call the trend dead, but it is a reason not to increase stakes on it.

Do sportsbooks price in the primetime under trend?

Not visibly in this sample. The no-vig under probability implied by closing primetime prices averaged 49.88 percent, almost exactly a coin flip, while the unders landed 54.74 percent of the time. The flat 2024 and 2025 seasons could be the start of the market catching up, or simply two ordinary seasons.
