NFL teams that lost outright as favorites of 3 or more points covered the spread 51.8 percent of the time in their next game from 1999 through 2025, 782-727-57. That is just under the 52.4 percent needed to profit at -110. The angle only shows up after the biggest upsets: teams that lost as 7-point favorites covered 55.6 percent the next week, 209-167-14.

NFL teams that lost outright as favorites of 3 or more points covered the spread 51.8 percent of the time in their next game from 1999 through 2025. That's a 782-727-57 record, just under the 52.4 percent you need to profit at standard -110 pricing. The bounce-back story only holds up after the biggest upsets. Teams that lost as favorites of 7 or more covered 55.6 percent of the time the next week, going 209-167-14. Most of that edge came when the team went on the road, and the angle has gone 8-14-3 so far this season. The Best Bet on Sports has built a verified $367,520+ in profit across all sportsbooks over more than twenty years by testing angles like this before betting them.

"Buy the good team after a bad loss" is one of the oldest lines in football betting. It sounds like an edge, because the public overreacts to the last thing it saw. We tested it on 27 seasons of closing lines to find out whether the market really overreacts, and if so, how much.

How Did We Test NFL Teams After an Upset Loss?

We used the nflverse schedule file, which has the closing spread and final score for every regular-season game since 1999. A team qualifies when it was favored by 3 or more points and lost outright. We then graded its next regular-season game against that game's closing spread.

Pushes are listed but left out of the cover rate. At -110, you need to win 52.38 percent of graded bets to break even, so that's the number that matters, not 50 percent.

We also built control groups, because a result means nothing without something to compare it to:

Previous gameNext game ATSCover rate
Lost as a favorite of 3+782-727-5751.82%
Won as a favorite of 3+1,748-1,755-10249.90%
Won as a favorite of 3+ but didn't cover482-497-3149.23%
Lost as a pick'em to 2.5-point favorite or dog659-663-2949.85%
Lost as an underdog of 3+1,735-1,773-9549.46%
All games6,357-6,358-35850.00%

The upset-loss group is the only one above 50 percent, so the direction is real. But it beats the other groups by about two points, and it still falls short of break-even. Bet every upset loser blindly and you'd have lost money over 27 seasons, just slowly.

The 95 percent range on that 51.82 percent runs from about 49.3 to 54.3 percent. A true rate of 50 percent fits inside it.

Does the Size of the Upset Matter?

Yes, and this is where the angle gets interesting. The bigger the upset, the better the next week has gone.

Previous gameNext game ATSCover rate
Lost as a 3 to 6.5-point favorite573-560-4350.57%
Lost as a favorite of 7+209-167-1455.59%
Lost as a favorite of 10+65-51-256.03%

The common upsets, where a field-goal favorite loses a close game, show almost nothing. Those losses happen all the time, and the market doesn't seem to overreact to them.

The big upsets are different. When a team favored by a touchdown or more loses outright, it covered 55.59 percent of the time in its next game. The 95 percent range runs from 50.5 to 60.6 percent, so even the low end sits just above a coin flip. The 7-point group finished above 50 percent in 17 of 27 seasons, below in 7 and even in 3.

The 10-point group looks similar, at 56.03 percent, but with 118 games its range runs from about 47 to 65 percent. It points the same way. It doesn't prove anything on its own.

Does It Matter Where the Next Game Is?

It does. Teams coming off an upset loss covered 54.07 percent of the time on the road (472-401-29) and only 48.74 percent at home (310-326-28).

That split gets stronger after the biggest upsets:

Lost as a 7+ favorite, next gameATSCover rate
On the road134-98-957.76%
At home75-69-552.08%

One likely reason is that a home team coming off an embarrassing loss gets plenty of public support anyway. Fans expect a response, so the line doesn't drop much. A road team after the same loss looks shakier on paper, and that's where the number seems to give a little too much.

We also checked the margin of the upset. Teams that lost by 14 or more went 193-153-7 (55.78 percent) the next week, while teams that lost by 1 to 6 went 377-377-33, exactly 50 percent. A narrow upset loss looks like noise to the market, and it prices it that way. A blowout upset loss looks like a real problem, and that's when the market overcorrects.

There's an even sharper cut: teams that lost by 14 or more as 7-point favorites went 47-23-2, a 67.14 percent cover rate. We're showing it because it's in the data, but we wouldn't bet on it. It's 72 games, and it's the kind of result you get when you keep slicing until something looks great.

⚔ The Live Edge: The pregame number on a team coming off an upset loss is set by fear. The live number is set by what's actually happening. If the "broken" favorite comes out and moves the ball on its first two drives, the live line often hasn't caught up with what you're seeing. That's the kind of gap we look for during games. When in the Season Does This Angle Work Best?

Early. Teams that suffered an upset loss in Weeks 1 through 3 covered 57.29 percent of the time the following week (169-126-10). From Week 9 on, the same angle went 423-432-34, a 49.47 percent cover rate.

That fits what we found when we tested whether early-season NFL lines are softer. In September the market has little current-season data, so a single bad game moves opinions a lot. By November, one upset loss sits next to eight other results, and the market treats it as one data point.

The angle has also been stronger lately. From 2018 through 2025, upset losers covered 54.67 percent of the time, compared with about 50.5 percent in each of the two earlier eras. That's encouraging, but recent strength in a small sample is also how angles fool people, so we'd treat it as a reason to keep watching, not a reason to bet bigger.

How Is This Different From a Letdown or Bounce-Back Spot?

We've tested the other side of this game before. In NFL letdown spots, we looked at the underdog that pulled off the upset and found that fading it the next week didn't work. In NFL bounce-back spots after a blowout, we looked at any team coming off a loss of 20 or more, favored or not.

This study isolates a different team: the one the market expected to win. The data says those two groups behave differently. The upset winner isn't overvalued the next week. The upset loser is slightly undervalued, but only when the loss was big enough to change how people see the team.

Two more numbers help explain why. Teams in our sample were favored by 5.3 points on average in the game they lost, and by only 0.9 points on average in the next game. Some of that drop is just a different opponent and venue. But those teams still won 53.2 percent of their next games outright, and 68.1 percent of the games where they were favored again. They weren't broken. They had one bad Sunday.

Which NFL Teams Fit This Spot in Week 9?

Three teams playing Sunday come off an upset loss as a favorite of 3 or more. Lines are from the nflverse schedule as of Saturday morning and will move.

TeamUpset lossWeek 9 gameFits 7+ spot?
DallasLost 33-30 to Arizona as a 7-point home favorite (Week 8)-4.5 at IndianapolisYes, on the road
HoustonLost 27-21 to the Giants as a 10-point home favorite (Week 7, then a bye)-6 at the ChargersYes, on the road
SeattleLost 34-17 to Chicago as a 3-point home favorite (Week 8)-8.5 vs. ArizonaNo, at home

Dallas and Houston both fit the strongest version of the angle: a big upset loss, followed by a road game. Notice that both are still favored. The market didn't throw them away, which matches the history. The edge, where it exists, is a point or two of overcorrection, not a pick that wins by itself.

This season's results are a good reminder of that. Upset losers have gone 8-14-3 against the spread through the Thursday night game of Week 9. Twenty-five games proves nothing either way, but it shows how far a real edge of a few percent can drift in a short run.

What Does This Mean for Your NFL Picks Against the Spread?

Use it as a filter, not a system. The data supports three rules:

1. Ignore small upsets. A field-goal favorite losing a close game tells you almost nothing about next week. 2. Pay attention to big upsets, especially on the road. Teams that lost as 7-point favorites covered 55.6 percent of the time the next week, and 57.8 percent on the road. 3. Weigh it more in September than in November. The market overreacts most when it has the least data.

Any service selling "bounce-back" plays should be able to show you numbers like these. If it can't, the pick is a story. A real sports handicapping service tests the angle first and tells you how big the edge is. Our NFL spread picks page shows how we handicap against the number, and our NFL picks page has the weekly card. If you're thinking about whether to buy sports picks from anyone, start with expert sports picks that come with the reasoning attached. Our football handicappers page explains our process.

For basketball, our basketball handicappers page applies the same approach to NBA lines, where one bad night moves the market even more often.

What This Study Doesn't Cover

This study uses closing spreads, so it reflects the number at kickoff, not the opening line or what you might get early in the week. It doesn't control for injuries, including the cases where the upset happened because a starter went down. It counts only the next game, and only in the same regular season, so Week 18 upsets are excluded. The splits by venue, margin and week cut a sample of 1,566 games into smaller pieces, and some of those pieces are small enough to be noise.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should you bet on NFL teams after an upset loss?

Not blindly. From 1999 through 2025, teams that lost outright as favorites of 3 or more points covered 51.8 percent of the time in their next game, 782-727-57. That's just under the 52.4 percent needed to profit at -110. The angle only becomes interesting after bigger upsets.

How do NFL teams do after losing as a big favorite?

Better. Teams that lost outright as favorites of 7 or more covered 55.6 percent of the time the next week, going 209-167-14. The 95 percent range runs from about 50.5 to 60.6 percent, and the group finished above 50 percent in 17 of 27 seasons.

Is it better to bet upset losers at home or on the road?

On the road. Teams coming off an upset loss covered 54.1 percent of the time on the road and 48.7 percent at home. After losing as a 7-point favorite, road teams covered 57.8 percent of the time. Home teams likely get enough public support that the line doesn't drop much.

Does the margin of the upset loss matter?

Yes. Teams that lost by 14 or more covered 55.8 percent of the time in their next game. Teams that lost by 1 to 6 covered exactly 50 percent. The market seems to shrug off a narrow loss and overreact to a lopsided one.

Does this angle work all season?

It has worked best early. Teams with an upset loss in Weeks 1 through 3 covered 57.3 percent of the time the following week. From Week 9 on, the cover rate was 49.5 percent. One bad game moves opinions more when there's less current-season data.

Which NFL teams fit the upset-loss spot in Week 9 of 2026?

Dallas, Houston and Seattle. Dallas lost to Arizona as a 7-point favorite and plays at Indianapolis. Houston lost to the Giants as a 10-point favorite and plays at the Chargers. Seattle lost to Chicago as a 3-point favorite and hosts Arizona. Dallas and Houston fit the stronger road version.

How has the upset-loss angle done in 2026?

Poorly so far. Teams coming off an upset loss as a favorite of 3 or more have gone 8-14-3 against the spread through the Thursday night game of Week 9. With only 25 games, that doesn't change the long-term picture, but it shows how much a small edge can swing in a short run.
