NFL Bounce-Back Spots After a Blowout, Tested

Expert sports picks and handicapping - The Best Bet on Sports
By Sports Betting TikTok•2026-10-17
["nfl picks against the spread""nfl bounce back spots""nfl betting trends tested""nfl expert picks""sports handicapping service""ats betting systems""football handicappers"]

NFL teams coming off a loss of 20 or more points covered the spread 52.57 percent of the time in their next game from 2015 through 2025, 256-231 across 487 games. That is barely above the 52.4 percent needed to profit at -110, and the 95 percent range runs from 48.1 to 57.1 percent. Blowout winners covered 49.49 percent the following week. The bounce-back spot is real in direction and too small to sell alone.

The NFL "bounce-back spot" after a blowout loss is one of the most repeated angles in football betting, and over eleven seasons it has been only barely real. From 2015 through 2025, teams coming off a loss of 20 or more points covered the spread in their next game 256 times in 487 tries, 52.57 percent. A bettor needs about 52.4 percent to profit at standard -110 prices, and graded at the actual closing spread odds, the angle returned +1.63 percent per dollar. The 95 percent range on the cover rate runs from 48.1 to 57.1 percent, which includes losing. Teams coming off 20-point wins covered 49.49 percent the next week. The Best Bet on Sports has built a verified $367,520+ in profit across all sportsbooks over more than twenty years, and this is the kind of claim we test before we let anyone sell it to you.

Every Tuesday, somebody writes that the team that just got embarrassed will "respond." The coach called out the effort, the players held a meeting, and the market has overreacted to one bad afternoon. Every Tuesday, somebody else writes that the team that just won by four touchdowns is due for a letdown.

Both stories sound like football. Both are sold as picks. This post checks what they have actually been worth.

How Did We Test the Bounce-Back Spot?

We used every NFL regular-season game from 2015 through 2025 in the nflverse game file, which records the closing spread, the closing spread odds for each side and the final score.

For every team in every game, we looked at the margin of its previous game in the same season. Week 1 games have no previous game, so they were dropped. Games that landed exactly on the closing spread were dropped too, because a push is neither a cover nor a loss. That left 5,298 team-games.

Each was graded against the closing spread at the side's actual closing price. Where a price was missing, we used -110. Then we sorted the games by how the team's previous game went, from blowout loss to blowout win.

Do NFL Teams Cover After a Blowout Loss?

Slightly more often than not.

Previous gameTeam-gamesATS recordCover rateReturn per $1
Lost by 20 or more487256-23152.57%+1.63%
Lost by 14 to 19418204-21448.80%-5.53%
Lost by 1 to 131,737848-88948.82%-5.37%
Won by 1 to 131,732885-84751.10%-0.76%
Won by 14 to 19417204-21348.92%-4.90%
Won by 20 or more487241-24649.49%-3.73%

The blowout losers were the only group that finished in the black, and only just. They covered 52.57 percent of the time and made 7.95 units across eleven seasons of flat one-unit bets. That is less than one unit a year.

The groups next to them tell you something too. Teams that lost by 14 to 19 points covered 48.80 percent, no better than teams that lost close games. If the bounce-back effect were a strong psychological response to an embarrassing loss, a 17-point beating should produce some of it. It did not.

We resampled the 487 blowout-loss games 3,000 times. The middle 95 percent of cover rates ran from 48.05 to 57.08 percent. The breakeven of 52.4 percent sits almost exactly in the middle of that range. The honest reading is that the bounce-back may be a small real effect, and the data cannot tell it apart from no effect at all.

Do Teams Have a Letdown After a Blowout Win?

Not much of one. Teams coming off wins of 20 or more covered 49.49 percent the following week, and teams coming off wins of 30 or more covered 46.40 percent across 125 games. That second number looks like a letdown, but the 95 percent range around it runs from 37.6 to 55.2 percent. A sample of 125 cannot carry the claim.

The mirror image is similar. Teams that lost by 30 or more covered 53.66 percent in 123 games, with a range of 44.7 to 62.6 percent. The more extreme the blowout, the more dramatic the story and the less data behind it.

When Did the Bounce-Back Work Best?

Two cuts stood out, and both need the same warning.

Blowout loser (20+), next gameGamesATS recordCover rate
Underdog in the next game346191-15555.20%
Favorite in the next game13863-7545.65%
Had been favored in the blowout loss9456-3859.57%
Had been the underdog in the blowout loss392200-19251.02%
Next game after a bye3115-1648.39%

Blowout losers getting points the next week covered 55.20 percent, worth +6.69 percent per dollar. Blowout losers laying points covered only 45.65 percent. That split has a plausible reason: when a beaten team is still favored, the market has not marked it down much, so there is less overreaction to collect.

The most striking cut was teams that were favored and still lost by 20 or more. They covered 59.57 percent the next week. That is 94 games across eleven seasons, fewer than nine a year, and the 95 percent range on it runs from 50.0 to 69.1 percent. It is a pattern worth watching. It is not a system.

Here is why we keep saying that. We ran six previous-game bands and five splits on the blowout group. Eleven cuts on the same 5,298 games will produce a couple of eye-catching numbers by chance alone. That is how most published betting trends are made, and it is the main reason they stop working when you start betting them. It is the same test we applied to the bye-week edge and referee over/under trends, and both came back weaker than their reputations.

Has It Been Consistent Year to Year?

No. Blowout losers covered at better than 50 percent in seven of eleven seasons, peaking at 60.8 percent in 2017 and 60.6 percent in 2022. They covered 45.8 percent in 2023 and 40.8 percent in 2024, when a bettor taking every bounce-back spot went 20-29.

In 2026, through Thursday night's Week 6 game, blowout losers are 8-3-1 against the spread the next week, and blowout winners are 4-8. That is the angle having a strong six weeks. It also looks a lot like 2017 did in October. A strong six-week run is also the trap behind how much a hot ATS start actually predicts, and early-season lines were not measurably softer in our eleven-season test either.

What Are This Week's Bounce-Back Spots?

Four teams lost by 20 or more in Week 5, and all four play Sunday. Lines below are the nflverse closing figures posted Saturday morning.

TeamWeek 5 resultWeek 6 gameWeek 6 line
ChicagoLost 31-7 at Green Bay as a 1.5-point favoriteat AtlantaChicago -1.5
Las VegasLost 45-17 at New Englandvs. BuffaloLas Vegas +4.5
TennesseeLost 26-3 to Houstonat IndianapolisTennessee +7
ArizonaLost 45-21 to Detroitat the RamsArizona +12.5

Chicago is the awkward one. It fits the strongest cut, a favorite that got blown out, and the weakest one, a blowout loser laying points the next week. Small subsets pointing in opposite directions on the same game is a good reminder of how little these splits can carry.

We are not recommending any of the four. A bounce-back spot is a reason to look at a game, not a reason to bet it. Whether Las Vegas is the right side at +4.5 depends on what actually went wrong in New England, who is healthy and where the number moves, which is what NFL picks against the spread should be built on.

⚔ The Live Edge: Whether a beaten team has "responded" is not knowable on Tuesday. It is visible in the first quarter on Sunday. A team that comes out flat again is still priced, for a while, as though the bounce-back narrative might be true, and a team that comes out sharp is sometimes priced as though last week still matters. Reading that live is what we do, and it is a large part of why we are limited on all six major U.S. sportsbooks.

To be precise about that callout: this study uses closing pregame spreads. It contains no in-game prices, so it cannot measure whether live lines after a blowout are easier to beat. That is our structural view, not a finding from these 487 games.

What Should You Expect From a Sports Handicapping Service?

This is the part that matters if you are deciding whether to pay for picks.

A bounce-back angle that wins 52.57 percent is roughly the size of a real NFL edge. Good bettors do not win 60 percent against the spread over large samples. They win something in the low-to-mid 50s, consistently, at good prices. So a service selling "bounce-back spots that hit 60 percent" is either showing you a small subset, a short window, or both.

Three questions will tell you a lot about any service. Does it show you its full record, including the seasons when its favorite angles failed, like 2024 for this one? Does it explain why a pick should win beyond "the team will respond"? And does it grade its picks at prices you could actually have bet? Our results page lists every graded play, and the sports handicapping service page explains what we think a service owes the people who pay for it.

If you are comparing options, our pages on NFL expert picks, football handicappers and how to pay for sports picks walk through what to look for. The same scrutiny applies in basketball, where "bounce-back" and "letdown" spots are sold in even greater volume. We have not tested the NBA version here, and the basketball handicappers you consider should be able to show you whether they have.

Where This Analysis Stops

Four limits.

This is NFL regular season only, 2015 through 2025, graded at closing numbers. Bettors who act on Tuesday bet a different line than the one we graded.

"Previous game" means the previous game in the same season, so a bye week sits between some of them. Only 31 blowout losers came off a bye, too few to judge separately.

The margin of a blowout says nothing about why it happened. A 24-point loss with the starting quarterback hurt in the first quarter is a different event from a 24-point loss at full strength, and this study treats them the same.

And the subsets are small. They describe what happened. They do not promise it will repeat.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do NFL teams cover the spread after a blowout loss?

Slightly more often than not. From 2015 through 2025, NFL teams coming off a loss of 20 or more points covered in their next game 256 times in 487 tries, 52.57 percent, returning +1.63 percent per dollar at closing prices. The 95 percent range runs from 48.1 to 57.1 percent, so the effect cannot be separated from chance.

Is there a letdown after an NFL blowout win?

Not a reliable one. Teams coming off wins of 20 or more covered 49.49 percent the following week from 2015 through 2025. Teams coming off wins of 30 or more covered 46.40 percent, but that is 125 games and the range around it runs from 37.6 to 55.2 percent.

What is the best version of the NFL bounce-back angle?

In this study, teams that were favored and still lost by 20 or more covered 59.57 percent of the time in their next game, 56-38. Blowout losers getting points the next week covered 55.20 percent across 346 games. Both are subsets found by cutting the data several ways, and the smaller one averages fewer than nine games a season.

What cover rate do you need to profit on NFL spreads?

At standard -110 prices, about 52.4 percent. That means the bounce-back angle's 52.57 percent sits right at breakeven. Most real NFL edges are in the low-to-mid 50s, which is why a pick service claiming 60 percent or more over a long stretch deserves close scrutiny.

How has the bounce-back angle done in 2026?

Through Thursday night's Week 6 game, NFL teams coming off a 20-point loss are 8-3-1 against the spread the next week, and teams coming off a 20-point win are 4-8. Twelve games is a very small sample. In 2024, the same angle went 20-29.

Which teams are in a bounce-back spot in NFL Week 6?

Four teams lost by 20 or more in Week 5: Chicago, which is -1.5 at Atlanta; Las Vegas, +4.5 at home against Buffalo; Tennessee, +7 at Indianapolis; and Arizona, +12.5 at the Rams. A bounce-back spot is a reason to look closer at a game, not a reason to bet it.

Should a sports pick service sell bounce-back systems?

A service can use situational angles, but it should show the full record behind them, including bad seasons, and explain why a pick should win beyond the narrative. The bounce-back angle has had losing years as recent as 2023 and 2024. A service that only shows the good years is showing you a subset.
