4-0 Against the Spread: What a Hot Start Predicts

An NFL team's record against the spread after four games predicts almost nothing about the rest of its season. Across 352 team-seasons from 2015 through 2025, the correlation was -0.05. Teams that opened 4-0 ATS went 71-83-5 the rest of the way, a 46.10 percent cover rate, while the market moved three points toward them. Here is what that means for NFL picks against the spread and for anyone advertising a hot start.
An NFL team's record against the spread after four games predicts almost nothing about the rest of its season. Across 352 team-seasons from 2015 through 2025, the correlation between a team's cover rate in its first four games and its cover rate afterward was -0.05, which is statistically zero. Teams that opened 4-0 against the spread went 71-83-5 the rest of the way, a 46.10 percent cover rate, while the closing spread moved about three points in their favor. The Best Bet on Sports has built a verified $367,520+ in profit across all sportsbooks over more than twenty years, and none of it came from chasing a team's hot start.
Week 5 is when ATS records start getting quoted as if they mean something. A team covers four straight, its name appears on every best-bets list, and the reasoning is always some version of "the market keeps underrating them."
Sometimes that is true for a week. Over a season, the data says it almost never is.
How Did We Test Early-Season ATS Records?
We used every NFL regular-season game from 2015 through 2025 in the nflverse game file, graded from each team's side against the closing spread. For every team in every season, we split its schedule into its first four games and everything after, then compared the two records.
That gives 352 team-seasons, each one a natural experiment: here is what a bettor saw in early October, and here is what happened next.
We used the closing spread because it is the number the market settled on after absorbing everything it knew, including the early-season record. If a hot start carried information the market missed, it would show up as continued covering against the close.
Does a Hot ATS Start Keep Going?
No.
| ATS wins in first four games | Teams | Rest-of-season ATS | Cover rate |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4 | 13 | 71-83-5 | 46.10% |
| 3 | 84 | 522-502-24 | 50.98% |
| 2 | 148 | 883-908-53 | 49.30% |
| 1 | 90 | 544-545-30 | 49.95% |
| 0 | 17 | 112-93-7 | 54.63% |
Read the right-hand column from top to bottom. If early covering predicted later covering, the numbers would fall steadily from the 4-win row to the 0-win row. Instead they hover around 50 percent, and the two extreme rows point the wrong way: the teams that covered every early game were the worst rest-of-season bets, and the teams that covered none were the best.
Both of those extreme rows are small, 13 and 17 teams, and neither is evidence of a reverse trend you should bet. The point is simpler than that. Across all 352 team-seasons the correlation between early and later cover rates was -0.05. An early ATS record is not a signal.
Grouping more broadly gives the same answer. Teams that covered three or four of their first four games went 593-585 afterward, 50.34 percent. Teams that covered one or none went 656-638, 50.70 percent. Neither group clears the 52.38 percent needed to profit at -110.
Does It Work With a Bigger Sample, After Eight Games?
It does not. Using each team's first eight games instead of four, the correlation with the rest of the season was -0.06. Teams that covered six or more of their first eight went 179-170 the rest of the way, 51.29 percent. Teams that covered two or fewer went 203-181, 52.86 percent.
Doubling the early sample did not make the record more predictive. That matters, because the usual defense of a hot-start trend is that four games is too few and the real pattern shows up later. Half a season is not too few, and it still showed nothing.
Why Do Hot ATS Starts Fade?
Because the price catches up.
| Group | Average closing spread, first four games | Average closing spread, rest of season | Move |
|---|---|---|---|
| Teams that opened 4-0 ATS | Favored by 0.22 | Favored by 3.22 | 3.00 points toward them |
| Teams that opened 0-4 ATS | Underdog by 2.64 | Underdog by 4.36 | 1.72 points against them |
A team that covers four straight is a team the market underestimated four straight times. The market notices. For the rest of the season, the 4-0 group closed about three points more favored than in its first month, which is exactly the adjustment that turns a cover machine into a coin flip, or slightly worse.
Covering against the spread is not a team quality. It is the gap between a team and its price. Once the price moves, the gap is gone, and what remains is a team that is good, which the spread already says.
What Does This Mean for the 2026 Season?
Through Week 4 of 2026, one team covered every game: the Las Vegas Raiders. They beat Miami by 14 as 3-point favorites, won outright as underdogs at the Chargers and at New Orleans, and lost to Kansas City by 3 while getting 4.5. That is a 3-1 straight-up team that has been underestimated every single week.
At the other end, Houston and Philadelphia were 0-4 against the spread. The Texans were 0-4 straight up as well. The Eagles were 1-3 and failed to cover even in their win, beating Washington by 2 as 6-point favorites.
The 2015-2025 data does not say fade the Raiders or back the Eagles. It says those records are not reasons to do anything. The useful question about Las Vegas is whether the Week 5 line, which in our data file had New England favored by 3.5, is right, and their ATS record does not answer it. Our post on why the 4-0 teams' odds still look doubtful makes the same point about straight-up records.
To be precise about that callout: this study uses closing spreads and final scores only. It contains no in-game prices, so it cannot measure whether live betting is easier to beat. That is structural reasoning, not a finding from these 352 team-seasons.
What Does This Mean When You Buy NFL Picks Against the Spread?
The same table applies to the people selling the picks.
A team's 4-0 ATS start predicted nothing, and a handicapper's hot October is built from the same raw material: a short run of spreads, each one close to a coin flip. A service that leads with "11-3 ATS this season" is showing you a record that, by itself, is about as informative as the Raiders' 4-0. We worked through how small samples behave in what a good ATS record really is, and the numbers are uncomfortable: a single season of five picks a week sits comfortably inside the range pure chance produces.
So when you evaluate NFL spread picks or any other source of nfl expert picks, ask three questions.
How long is the record? Weeks are nothing. Seasons are barely something. Thousands of graded plays start to count.
Was it graded against prices you could actually have bet? A record built on opening numbers, or numbers that moved before the pick went out, is not a record you could have followed.
Where does the edge come from? If the answer is a trend anyone can look up, such as a hot ATS start, the market has looked it up too, and this table shows what happens next.
That is the standard a sports handicapping service should meet, and it is why our results page shows every graded play rather than a highlighted streak. Our expert sports picks page explains where we think real edges come from, the comparison of what you actually get for the money is on pay for sports picks, and our approach to a full football season is on the football handicappers page. For the general method, read how to read a sports betting track record.
Where This Analysis Stops
Four limits.
This is NFL regular season only, 2015 through 2025, graded against closing spreads. Opening lines are less efficient, and it is possible that a hot team's early-week number lags its record by more than the close does. That would be a line-shopping question, not evidence that the record itself predicts covering.
The extreme groups are small. Thirteen teams opened 4-0 against the spread and eight opened a strict 0-4, so their rest-of-season rates have wide ranges. They are shown to illustrate the price adjustment, not as a trend in either direction.
"First four games" means the first four games each team actually played, so teams with an early bye reached that point a week later.
And this is about ATS records, not team quality. A team that starts 4-0 against the spread is often a genuinely good team. The data says the market figures that out quickly, not that the team is bad.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does an NFL team's early ATS record predict future covers?
No. Across 352 NFL team-seasons from 2015 through 2025, the correlation between a team's cover rate in its first four games and its cover rate in the rest of the season was -0.05, which is effectively zero. Using the first eight games instead, it was -0.06.
How do teams that start 4-0 against the spread do afterward?
Worse than average. The thirteen NFL teams that opened 4-0 against the spread from 2015 through 2025 went 71-83-5 for the rest of their seasons, a 46.10 percent cover rate, below the 52.38 percent needed to profit at -110.
Why do hot ATS teams stop covering?
Because the spread adjusts. Teams that opened 4-0 against the spread closed as favorites by an average of 0.22 points in their first four games and 3.22 points afterward. Covering is the gap between a team and its price, and once the price moves three points, the gap closes.
Should you bet against teams that start 0-4 against the spread?
Not on this evidence. The eight teams that opened a strict 0-4 against the spread went 55-41-2 afterward, but that is too small a sample to treat as a trend. The broader group that covered one or none of its first four games went 50.70 percent afterward.
Which NFL team started 4-0 against the spread in 2026?
The Las Vegas Raiders were the only team to cover all four of their first games in 2026, going 3-1 straight up. Houston and Philadelphia were 0-4 against the spread. Historically, records like these have not predicted rest-of-season covering in either direction.
How should I judge a service selling NFL picks against the spread?
By the length of its record, whether it was graded against prices you could actually bet, and whether its edge comes from something the market does not already price. A short hot streak is as uninformative for a handicapper as a 4-0 ATS start is for a team.
What cover rate do you need to profit on NFL spreads?
About 52.38 percent at standard -110 pricing, because you risk $110 to win $100. In this study, the teams with the best early ATS records never cleared that rate over the rest of the season. The only groups that did were teams with poor early records, and those groups were too small, and too inconsistent with the rest of the table, to bet on.
