NFL Teams After Overtime, Against the Spread

NFL teams coming off an overtime game are close to a coin flip against the spread. From 1999 through 2025, they went 375-387 ATS (49.21 percent) in 762 games. The exception is a Thursday game right after overtime: those teams went 8-28 ATS (22.22 percent), losing to the number by 6.75 points per game on average, while other short-week teams covered 52.06 percent.

NFL teams coming off an overtime game are close to a coin flip against the spread in their next game. From 1999 through 2025, they went 375-387 against the spread, a 49.21 percent cover rate across 762 games, while teams coming off a regulation game covered 50.05 percent. The one exception is a short week. Teams that played on Thursday right after an overtime game went 8-28 ATS, a 22.22 percent cover rate, and missed the spread by 6.75 points per game on average. The Best Bet on Sports has built a verified $367,520+ in profit across all sportsbooks over more than twenty years by testing betting angles like this before trusting them.

Overtime games are on the rise this season. Through Thursday night of Week 8, nine of the first 108 regular-season games in 2026 went to overtime, 8.33 percent, a higher rate than any full season since 2012. The New York Giants have played two of them, a 27-27 tie in Washington in Week 5 and a 27-21 overtime win in Houston in Week 7.

Every time it happens, the same question comes up during the week: is the overtime team tired, and should you fade it? Here is what 27 seasons of results say.

How Did We Test Teams After Overtime?

We used the nflverse game file for every regular-season game from 1999 through 2025. For each team, we found the previous game that season and noted whether it went to overtime and how it ended. We then graded the next game against the closing spread from that team's side. Pushes were dropped. Week 1 games had no previous game that season and were excluded.

That left 12,715 graded games: 11,953 after a regulation game and 762 after an overtime game. For each overtime game we also recorded the days of rest before the next game, so we could separate Thursday games, normal Sunday-to-Sunday weeks and games after a bye.

Do Teams Cover After an Overtime Game?

Not much differently from everyone else.

Previous gameNext game ATSCover rateGames
Regulation5,982-5,97150.05%11,953
Overtime, any result375-38749.21%762
Overtime win176-19347.70%369
Overtime loss186-17751.24%363
Overtime tie13-1743.33%30

The overall number is a non-result. A 49.21 percent rate on 762 games is well within the range of a fair coin. The split by result is more interesting: teams coming off an overtime win covered 47.70 percent, and teams coming off an overtime loss covered 51.24 percent. That direction fits the usual market story, where bettors pay up for the winning team. But the closing lines don't support it. Teams coming off an overtime win were, on average, 0.12-point underdogs in their next game, and teams coming off an overtime loss were 0.13-point underdogs. The market priced the two groups almost identically.

So there's no broad fade here. A rule like "bet against every overtime winner" would have lost money at -110 (break-even is 52.38 percent, and fading it would have covered 52.30 percent). Close, but not enough to bet blindly.

What Happens on a Short Week After Overtime?

This is where the data stops being a coin flip.

Rest before next gameNext game ATSCover rateGames
5 days or fewer (Thursday games)8-2822.22%36
6 to 8 days (normal week)318-32149.77%639
9 days or more (after a bye)49-3856.32%87

All 36 short-week games in the sample were Thursday or Friday games following a Sunday overtime game, and in every case the opponent was also on a short week. So the gap isn't extra rest for the other team. It's an overtime team against a team that played a normal-length game four days earlier. Those overtime teams missed the spread by 6.75 points per game on average.

Compare that with every other short-week team. Teams playing on Thursday after a regulation game went 290-267 ATS, a 52.06 percent cover rate, with an average result of 0.49 points better than the spread. A short week, by itself, didn't hurt. A short week after overtime did.

The result held across decades, too. In the 2000s, these teams went 0-6 ATS. In the 2010s, they went 3-16. From 2020 through 2025, they went 4-6. The one 1999 game covered. Only the 2020s group came close to break-even.

How Much Should You Trust 8-28?

Less than the number makes it look, and more than zero.

Thirty-six games is a small sample. Before using it, we asked how often 36 coin flips would produce eight or fewer heads. The answer is well under one in 1,000. Even after allowing for the fact that we split the overtime data several ways, a result this extreme is unlikely to be pure luck.

There's also a plausible reason for it. Overtime adds up to 10 extra minutes in the regular season (it was 15 until 2017), and it comes at the end of a game, when players are already tired. On a normal week, that wears off by the next Sunday. On a Thursday turnaround there's no time to recover, and the closing spread doesn't seem to account for it.

Still, 36 games across 27 seasons means the spot comes up about once or twice a year. It's an angle to note when it shows up, not a system. And because the sample is small, we'd expect the true effect to be smaller than 22 percent. A reasonable estimate is that the overtime team on a Thursday is a real underdog to the number, not a near-certain loser.

Does an Overtime Team Do Better After a Bye?

It did slightly. Teams with nine or more days of rest after an overtime game, nearly all of them after a bye, went 49-38 ATS, a 56.32 percent cover rate. That fits the short-week finding: give the team time to recover and the overtime game stops mattering. But 87 games is also a small sample, and a 56 percent rate on 87 games is not far enough from 50 to bet on its own.

This is the situation the Giants and Texans are in now. Both played the Week 7 overtime game in Houston, both had their bye in Week 8, and both play on the road in Week 9: the Giants at Philadelphia and the Texans at the Los Angeles Chargers. The bye gives both teams full recovery, so our data says to handicap those games on the matchups, not on the overtime.

Does Home or Road Matter After Overtime?

There's a split, but we don't trust it much. Teams coming off overtime covered 45.17 percent at home (159-193) and 52.68 percent on the road (216-194). Favorites coming off overtime covered 45.74 percent (172-204), and underdogs covered 52.88 percent (202-180).

Those numbers line up with the broader pattern that the market slightly overrates teams with something positive behind them. But each split is one of several we tested, and none is strong enough to bet alone. They add a small lean at most.

The era breakdown is similarly noisy. From 2000 through 2009, overtime teams covered 52.28 percent the following week. From 2010 through 2016, it was 42.06 percent. Since overtime was shortened to 10 minutes in 2017, it's 50.21 percent. No era held up for long, which is what you'd expect if the overall effect is close to zero.

Do Overtime Teams Go Over or Under the Next Week?

Neither. The next game after an overtime game went over the closing total 50.46 percent of the time, across 753 games without a push. Straight up, teams coming off overtime won 46.59 percent of their next games, compared with 50.11 percent after a regulation game. That gap partly reflects that overtime teams tend to be slightly worse on average, which the spread already accounts for.

⚔ The Live Edge: A pregame trend can tell you a tired team might fade late, but it can't tell you whether it's actually happening. In-game, you can see it: a pass rush that's no longer getting home in the third quarter, a defense playing more snaps than usual, a team going conservative early. Those signs show up before the live line moves. That's the kind of read our live betting picks are built on, and it's a big part of why we are limited on all six major U.S. sportsbooks.

What Does This Mean When You Buy NFL Picks?

It means most "fatigue" talk around overtime games is noise. The only spot with a meaningful track record is a Thursday game right after overtime, and even that comes up only once or twice a season. Any service that fades overtime teams every week is selling a story the data doesn't support.

Our NFL picks against the spread are built on angles we've tested against closing lines, and we post every result on our results page. Frequently Asked Questions

Do NFL teams cover the spread after an overtime game?

About as often as anyone else. From 1999 through 2025, teams coming off an overtime game went 375-387 against the spread in their next game, a 49.21 percent cover rate across 762 games. Teams coming off a regulation game covered 50.05 percent.

Should you bet against a team that just won in overtime?

Not as a blanket rule. Teams coming off an overtime win covered 47.70 percent of the time in their next game, so fading them covered 52.30 percent, just under the 52.38 percent break-even at -110. The closing line priced overtime winners and losers almost identically.

How do NFL teams do on Thursday after an overtime game?

Badly. From 1999 through 2025, teams playing on a Thursday or Friday right after an overtime game went 8-28 against the spread, a 22.22 percent cover rate, and missed the spread by 6.75 points per game on average. Short-week teams coming off regulation games covered 52.06 percent.

Is 8-28 against the spread a reliable trend?

It's a real signal on a small sample. Thirty-six coin flips would produce eight or fewer heads well under one time in 1,000, and the short turnaround after extra minutes gives a plausible reason. But the spot comes up only once or twice a season, and the true effect is probably smaller than 22 percent.

Do teams play better after a bye that follows an overtime game?

Slightly. Teams with nine or more days of rest after an overtime game went 49-38 against the spread, a 56.32 percent cover rate. That fits the idea that recovery time removes the overtime effect, but 87 games is too small a sample to bet on its own.

How common are overtime games in the NFL?

From 1999 through 2025, between 3.5 and 9.8 percent of regular-season games went to overtime each season. Through Thursday of Week 8 in 2026, nine of 108 games went to overtime, 8.33 percent, the highest rate for any season since 2012.

Do games after overtime go over or under the total?

Neither, meaningfully. The next game after an overtime game went over the closing total 50.46 percent of the time across 753 games from 1999 through 2025. Overtime fatigue doesn't show up in the next week's scoring.
