The 1 PM Problem: When Sunday Parlays Actually Die

Most NFL Sunday parlays are already dead before the late games kick off. Across 189 full Sunday slates from 2015 through 2025, 62.61 percent of all Sunday games start in the 1 PM ET window, and a four-leg spread ticket built at random from a real slate was already busted before the 4 PM kickoffs 77.87 percent of the time. The failure is not bad luck in the night game. It happens in the first three hours.
An NFL Sunday is not one betting event. It is three, and they are wildly unequal. Across 189 full Sunday slates from 2015 through 2025, 62.61 percent of every Sunday game kicked off in the early window, which means a parlay built across the card is overwhelmingly exposed before most bettors have finished their first coffee. In our simulation of 756,000 four-leg spread tickets drawn from those real slates, 77.87 percent were already dead before the 4 PM games started. The Best Bet on Sports has traded these Sundays live for more than twenty years with a verified $367,520+ in profit across all sportsbooks, and the single most common thing we hear on a Sunday evening is that somebody's ticket "came down to the night game." Almost none of them do.
The feeling of a parlay is that it builds toward something. You watch the legs come in, the payout gets closer, and the last leg carries the weight. The arithmetic of a parlay on an NFL Sunday is close to the opposite. The overwhelming majority of the exposure resolves in the first window, most tickets are settled before the afternoon games begin, and the drama people remember is a small and unrepresentative slice of what actually happens.
This post puts numbers on that, using real slates and real results rather than a thought experiment.
How Is an NFL Sunday Actually Structured?
Start with the shape of the card, because everything else follows from it.
Using the nflverse game file, we took every regular-season Sunday game from 2015 through 2025 and grouped the games by kickoff time. We kept the 189 Sundays that carried at least ten games, which is what a normal in-season Sunday looks like, giving 2,394 games in the sample.
| Window | Kickoff times (ET) | Games | Share of the Sunday card |
|---|---|---|---|
| Early | 9:30 and 1:00 | 1,499 | 62.61% |
| Late | 4:05, 4:25, 4:30 | 703 | 29.37% |
| Night | 8:15, 8:20 | 192 | 8.02% |
The median full Sunday holds eight early games, four late games and one night game. That distribution is the whole story. Nearly two thirds of the board goes off at once, and a single game closes the day.
Bettors do not build tickets that way. They build them as if the Sunday card were an evenly spaced sequence, and then experience the day as a sequence, because the ticket that survives to the night game is the one they remember.
How Often Is a Sunday Parlay Dead Before the Late Games?
Here is the method, stated plainly so the result can be argued with.
We picked a real Sunday slate at random, drew a given number of distinct games from it without replacement, and chose a side on each leg by coin flip. Each leg was then graded against the actual final result and the actual closing spread for that game. That last part matters: these are not simulated games, they are the real ones. A coin-flip side is the honest baseline, because it is what a bettor without a demonstrated edge is actually doing, and it is the assumption a sportsbook prices against. We ran 756,000 tickets at each leg count.
| Legs | Dead before the 4 PM window | Dead at some point | Still alive at the night kickoff | Share of losing tickets that died early |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2 | 52.17% | 73.82% | 26.18% | 70.7% |
| 3 | 67.29% | 86.62% | 13.38% | 77.7% |
| 4 | 77.87% | 93.15% | 6.85% | 83.6% |
| 5 | 85.03% | 96.50% | 3.50% | 88.1% |
| 6 | 89.97% | 98.21% | 1.79% | 91.6% |
| 7 | 93.35% | 99.09% | 0.91% | 94.2% |
| 8 | 95.61% | 99.52% | 0.48% | 96.1% |
Read the four-leg row slowly, because it is the row most people are actually betting. Better than three tickets in four were finished before the late window began. Of the four-leg tickets that lost, 83.6 percent lost during the early games. And 6.85 percent were still live when the night game kicked off, which is roughly one Sunday in fifteen for a weekly four-leg bettor.
The right-hand column is the one that changes how the day feels. It says that the experience of a parlay is not a build toward a climax. It is a short burst of exposure, then several hours of watching football you no longer have a stake in.
Why Does the Early Window Do So Much Damage?
There is nothing special about the 1 PM games. They are not harder to handicap, the numbers are not worse, and the outcomes are not more random. The early window dominates the failure statistics for one reason: it contains most of the games.
A leg drawn at random from a full Sunday has a 62.61 percent chance of sitting in the early window. Across four legs, the expected number of early legs is about two and a half. With that much of the ticket resolving simultaneously, the probability that all of it survives is small, and it gets smaller the more legs you add.
This is worth separating from a claim it is often confused with. The early window is not where tickets go to die because of anything about the games. It is where you find out. The death is baked in at the moment you accept the leg count.
We can demonstrate that directly.
Does Building the Ticket From Late Games Fix Anything?
This is the obvious response, and it is worth testing rather than assuming, because it sounds like it should work.
We ran the identical simulation restricted to the 4 PM and night windows only, so no leg could possibly resolve before the late kickoffs.
| Legs | Dead before 4 PM | Dead at some point | Alive to the end |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2 (late and night only) | 0.00% | 74.09% | 25.91% |
| 3 (late and night only) | 0.00% | 86.78% | 13.22% |
| 4 (late and night only) | 0.00% | 93.32% | 6.68% |
Compare the four-leg row against the four-leg row in the previous table. Built across the whole card, a four-leg ticket loses 93.15 percent of the time. Built entirely out of late and night games, it loses 93.32 percent of the time. That difference is inside the noise of the simulation, and it is the most useful result on this page.
Shifting your legs later does not improve the ticket. It only changes the hour at which you learn the outcome. If the appeal of the late-only build is that the day stays interesting longer, that is a real preference and there is nothing wrong with holding it, but it should be understood as buying entertainment rather than buying equity.
What Should Change About How You Build a Sunday Ticket?
Four things follow from the data, and none of them require you to stop betting parlays.
Price the leg count, not the legs. The survival column moves from 26.18 percent at two legs to 6.85 percent at four and 1.79 percent at six. Every additional leg is a large, fixed tax on the probability that you see the night game with a live ticket. Our longer treatment of where that curve turns is in how many legs a parlay should have, and this study is an independent route to the same conclusion.
Expect the day to be over early, and plan the rest of it accordingly. If you know going in that better than three tickets in four are settled by 4 PM, the afternoon stops being a place where you chase. The most expensive hours on an NFL Sunday are the ones after a ticket busts, when the late slate is sitting there offering a rebuild.
Stop treating the night game as the risk. It carries 8.02 percent of the Sunday card. On a four-leg ticket, 83.6 percent of the losses already happened before the late games began. The night game is where you notice the outcome, not where it is decided.
Watch the push exposure. Across the Sunday sample, 2.24 percent of games landed exactly on the closing spread. That is a small per-leg number that compounds like everything else on a ticket, and the mechanics of what it does to your payout are covered in what happens when a parlay leg pushes.
Where This Analysis Stops
Two honest limits.
The coin-flip assumption means these numbers describe a bettor with no demonstrated edge. A real edge on each leg raises every survival figure, and it raises them multiplicatively, which is exactly the argument for fewer and better legs rather than more of them. What the simulation cannot do is tell you whether you have that edge, and most bettors who believe they do have never checked against closing numbers.
The sample is NFL Sundays only. Saturday college slates have a different window structure, with games spread far more evenly from noon to midnight, and the early-window concentration that drives this result is much weaker there. The same leg-count arithmetic still applies, but the timing conclusion does not transfer directly, and our read on the weekend crossover ticket lives in college football and NFL weekend parlay strategy.
None of this is an argument that a parlay is unbeatable or that you should never build one. It is an argument that the thing you are buying is not the thing the payout screen suggests you are buying. Our weekly board sits on NFL picks and football picks, the spread-specific work is on NFL spread picks, and what a real sports handicapping service owes you for the money is spelled out separately.

Frequently Asked Questions
What percentage of NFL parlays are dead before the late games?
In a simulation of 756,000 four-leg spread tickets drawn from 189 real NFL Sunday slates between 2015 and 2025, 77.87 percent were already losing before the 4 PM ET window began. At three legs it was 67.29 percent and at six legs 89.97 percent. The driver is that 62.61 percent of all Sunday games kick off in the early window, so most of a ticket's exposure resolves at once.
Why do so many Sunday games start at the same time?
The NFL schedules the large majority of its Sunday card in a single early block, historically 1:00 PM ET plus an occasional 9:30 AM international game, then a smaller 4 PM block and one night game. Across the 2,394 Sunday games in our sample the split was 1,499 early, 703 late and 192 night, and the median Sunday held eight early games against four late and one night.
Does building a parlay from only late games improve your odds?
No. We ran the same simulation restricted to the 4 PM and night windows and a four-leg ticket lost 93.32 percent of the time, against 93.15 percent for tickets built across the whole card. That gap is inside the simulation's noise. Shifting legs later changes when you find out, not whether you win, because the leg count is what sets the probability.
How many legs can stay alive into the Sunday night game?
Very few. In the same sample, 26.18 percent of two-leg tickets, 13.38 percent of three-leg tickets and 6.85 percent of four-leg tickets were still live at the night kickoff. At six legs it was 1.79 percent and at eight legs 0.48 percent, which is about one Sunday in two hundred for a weekly eight-leg bettor.
Does this mean the night game is the riskiest leg?
It is the opposite. The night game carries 8.02 percent of the Sunday card, so a randomly drawn leg rarely lands there. Of the four-leg tickets that lost in our simulation, 83.6 percent had already lost during the early window. The night game is where people notice the outcome, which is why it feels decisive, but the result was almost always settled hours earlier.
How often does an NFL Sunday spread land exactly on the number?
Across the 2,394 Sunday games in the sample, 2.24 percent finished exactly on the closing spread. On a single bet that is a refund. On a parlay the leg is removed and the ticket recalculates at the remaining odds, which is better than a loss and worse than a win, and the effect compounds as leg count rises.
Does this analysis apply to college football Saturdays?
Not directly. Saturday college slates spread kickoffs across roughly twelve hours rather than concentrating them in one block, so the early-window effect that drives these numbers is much weaker. The leg-count arithmetic still holds, because that is a property of parlays rather than of scheduling, but the specific timing conclusions in this post are an NFL Sunday result.
