Rookie Otega Oweh ruptured a right Achilles tendon in a preseason game and is out for the season after surgery. Most of those are depth pieces, but depth is exactly what Oklahoma City gave up this summer when it traded Isaiah Joe, Aaron Wiggins and Lu Dort.

How Much Does Holmgren Matter to Oklahoma City?

On the box score, a lot. Holmgren started all 69 regular-season games played last season, averaging 17.1 points, 8.9 rebounds and 1.9 blocks in 28.9 minutes, on 55.7 percent shooting and 36.2 percent from three. Oklahoma City went 64-18.

On the scoreboard, less than you might think, at least in the regular season. When Holmgren missed most of 2024-25 with a fractured pelvis, the Thunder were still 39-8 without the center by late March, according to Sports Illustrated's tracking. That roster could absorb the absence of a star big over a long stretch because it had depth everywhere else.

That is the question for 2026-27. With Joe, Wiggins and Dort gone and several reserves banged up, Oklahoma City's ability to cover for a missing starter is thinner than it was. The playoff numbers point the same way. Holmgren averaged 14.9 points and 8.2 rebounds in 15 playoff games last spring, and the series the Thunder lost was decided by small margins against the one opponent with a center who changes every possession.
