NFL Overtime Props, Tested

NFL overtime props hit far less often than most bettors think. From 1999 through 2025, only 5.96 percent of regular-season games went to overtime, which makes the fair price on Yes about +1578. The rate peaks at 7.29 percent when the spread is 3.5 to 4.5, falls to 3.56 percent at 10 or more, and overtime games went over the total 65.6 percent of the time.
The NFL overtime prop hits far less often than its price suggests. From 1999 through 2025, only 415 of 6,967 regular-season games went to overtime, a 5.96 percent rate. That makes the fair price on "Yes" about +1578, so a +900 or +1000 offer needs a game that is more than one and a half times as likely as average to reach overtime. The rate is highest when the spread is 3.5 to 4.5 points (7.29 percent) and lowest at 10 points or more (3.56 percent). The useful part for parlay bettors is what overtime does to the rest of the ticket: overtime games went over the closing total 65.6 percent of the time. The Best Bet on Sports has built a verified $367,520+ in profit across all sportsbooks over more than twenty years, and a lot of that comes from knowing which in-game numbers are priced on feel instead of data.
"Will the game go to overtime?" sits on almost every NFL prop menu. It's a long shot, it pays well, and it adds a big multiplier to a same-game parlay. That's exactly why it deserves a closer look. A long shot is only a good bet if it hits more often than the price implies, and most bettors have no idea what the real rate is.
We measured it. The numbers below come from nflverse schedule data for every regular-season game from 1999 through 2025, plus play-by-play data from 2016 through 2025 for the in-game questions. Ties count as overtime games, because they went to overtime.
How Often Do NFL Games Go to Overtime?
About once every 17 games. The rate has moved around by era, but not as much as the rule changes would suggest:
| Seasons | Overtime rate | Games |
|---|---|---|
| 1999-2011 | 6.08% | 3,304 |
| 2012-2016 | 6.48% | 1,280 |
| 2017-2021 | 5.25% | 1,296 |
| 2022-2025 | 5.80% | 1,087 |
| 1999-2025 | 5.96% | 6,967 |
| 2026 through Week 8 | 9.09% | 121 |
Single seasons swing a lot. The high was 9.77 percent in 2002 and the low was 3.52 percent in 2019. That range matters, because it means a hot start like 2026's 11 overtime games in the first 121 is not evidence that the true rate has changed. Over a full season, a 9 percent pace would be the second-highest mark in 28 years. It is more likely to drift back toward 6 percent than to hold.
That's the first lesson: don't price overtime off what you've seen recently. Two overtime games on one Sunday makes the prop feel live. The base rate doesn't care.
What Price Do You Need on the Overtime Prop?
Here's how the base rate translates into breakeven prices:
| Price on "Yes" | Implied probability | How it compares to the 5.96% base rate |
|---|---|---|
| +700 | 12.50% | Needs a game twice as likely as average |
| +900 | 10.00% | Needs 1.7x the average rate |
| +1000 | 9.09% | Needs 1.5x the average rate |
| +1200 | 7.69% | Close to fair in the highest-rate spread band |
| +1578 | 5.96% | Fair price for an average game |
We aren't quoting any book's overtime price here, because they vary by sportsbook and by game. Whatever you see, convert it to a percentage and compare it to the right baseline for that game. For most matchups, that baseline sits between 5 and 7 percent.
Does the Point Spread Predict Overtime?
Yes, but not the way people expect. You'd think a pick'em game would produce the most overtime. It doesn't:
| Closing spread | Overtime rate | Games |
|---|---|---|
| 0 to 1.5 | 6.18% | 760 |
| 2 to 3 | 6.48% | 1,776 |
| 3.5 to 4.5 | 7.29% | 1,234 |
| 5 to 6.5 | 5.83% | 1,098 |
| 7 to 9.5 | 5.53% | 1,229 |
| 10 or more | 3.56% | 870 |
The 3.5 to 4.5 band leads. One plausible reason is the field goal: when the better team is a field goal better, a trailing underdog can kick to tie late. Spreads of 10 or more cut the rate nearly in half, which makes sense since those games are rarely close in the fourth quarter.
Even the best band only reaches 7.29 percent, and the fair price there is about +1272. That's the ceiling. If your book offers +1000 on a 4-point game, you are still paying a premium. The spread tells you which overtime props are least overpriced, not which ones are good bets.
Tonight's Thursday game is a useful example. The nflverse schedule data on November 5 listed Jacksonville as a 10-point favorite over a Baltimore team playing without Lamar Jackson. Games at 10 or more went to overtime 3.56 percent of the time. That price would need to be around +2700 to be fair.
Does the Game Total Matter?
A little. Low-scoring games reach overtime slightly more often:
| Closing total | Overtime rate | Games |
|---|---|---|
| 40.5 or lower | 6.37% | 1,979 |
| 41 to 44.5 | 6.31% | 2,297 |
| 45 to 48.5 | 5.52% | 1,776 |
| 49 or higher | 5.03% | 915 |
The gap between the lowest and highest band is about 1.3 points. More scoring means more variance in the margin, which makes a tie at the end of regulation slightly less likely. Combine a short spread with a low total and you have the most overtime-friendly profile on the board. You'll still be well short of a +900 breakeven.
What Does Overtime Do to the Rest of a Parlay?
Here's where the overtime prop actually earns its spot on this page. Overtime is not independent of the other legs on a same-game ticket. It pushes two of them in predictable directions.
Overtime helps the over. Across 404 overtime games that didn't land exactly on the total, the over hit 65.6 percent of the time, compared with 49.5 percent across all games. Since the 2017 rule change cut overtime to 10 minutes, the over hit 70.9 percent of the time in overtime games (127 games). Extra possessions mean extra points, and most totals already bake in a close game at the end of regulation.
| Pair | Hit together | If the legs were independent |
|---|---|---|
| Overtime Yes + game over | 3.86% | 2.91% |
That's a 33 percent lift over what an independent parlay would price. Same-game parlay builders are designed to adjust correlated pairings like this one, so check whether yours does. If the price doesn't reflect the correlation, the combo carries more value than either leg alone.
Overtime kills the favorite's spread. Favorites still won 56.3 percent of overtime games. But they covered only 18.8 percent of the time, because 68.6 percent of decided overtime games ended within 3 points. If your parlay already has the favorite -6.5 on it, adding "overtime Yes" is close to a contradiction. The two legs work against each other.
The rule is simple: pair overtime with the over or the underdog's spread, never with a favorite laying more than a field goal. Our same-game parlay strategy guide for the NFL covers how books handle correlated legs, and our overtime settlement guide explains which props count overtime stats and which don't.
When Does the Overtime Prop Become Worth Betting Live?
Pregame, the overtime prop is almost always overpriced. Live, the game tells you a lot more. Using play-by-play data from 2,639 regular-season games from 2016 through 2025, here is how often games reached overtime based on the score margin at two checkpoints:
| Margin | At start of 4th quarter | With 5:00 left |
|---|---|---|
| Tied | 12.99% (154 games) | 34.16% (161 games) |
| 1 to 3 points | 9.38% (448) | 10.23% (430) |
| 4 to 7 points | 6.86% (598) | 4.84% (558) |
| 8 to 10 points | 5.71% (350) | ā |
| 11 to 14 points | 3.83% (418) | ā |
| 15 or more | 0.89% (671) | ā |
| 8 or more | ā | 1.28% (1,490) |
A game tied with five minutes left reached overtime about one time in three, a fair price of roughly +193. A game tied entering the fourth quarter reached overtime 12.99 percent of the time, about +670. Those are the only spots where the overtime market gives you something to work with, because the price has to catch up to a fast-changing game state.
Who Should Bet NFL Overtime Props?
Very few people, pregame. The prop is a 6 percent event usually priced like a 9 or 10 percent event. Bettors who like it should treat it as an add-on to correlated legs in a same-game parlay rather than a standalone bet, and only in short-spread, low-total games.
The better use of this data is defensive. If you build NFL parlay picks that already include a favorite's spread, this table tells you overtime is a risk to the ticket, not a hedge. If you're backing an underdog and the over, overtime is quietly on your side.
That's the kind of situational work we expect from serious football handicappers: find the price, then find what the price ignores. Our football betting picks page and our NFL picks page carry the current card, and our expert sports picks page explains how we pick spots. If you're deciding whether to buy sports picks from any service, ask whether it can show you numbers like these behind its opinions. How Did We Measure This?
Overtime flags, closing spreads, closing totals and final scores came from the nflverse schedule file for every regular-season game from 1999 through 2025, plus 2026 through Week 8. Ties are counted as overtime games. Over and under results exclude games that landed exactly on the closing total. The in-game margins came from nflverse play-by-play data for 2016 through 2025, using the first play at or after each checkpoint. We do not include playoff games, where overtime rules differ.
The 2026 overtime rate is based on 121 games and should be read as early-season noise until proven otherwise. Prices shown are breakeven conversions, not quotes from any sportsbook.

Frequently Asked Questions
How often do NFL games go to overtime?
From 1999 through 2025, 415 of 6,967 regular-season games went to overtime, a 5.96 percent rate, or about one game in 17. Single seasons ranged from 3.52 percent in 2019 to 9.77 percent in 2002. Through Week 8 of 2026 the rate is 9.09 percent, but that is only 121 games.
What is a fair price on the NFL overtime prop?
For an average game, about +1578, which matches the 5.96 percent base rate. The best spread band, 3.5 to 4.5 points, reached overtime 7.29 percent of the time, a fair price of about +1272. A +900 price implies 10 percent and a +1000 price implies 9.09 percent.
Which NFL games are most likely to go to overtime?
Games with closing spreads of 3.5 to 4.5 points went to overtime most often, at 7.29 percent. Low totals help slightly: games with totals of 40.5 or lower went to overtime 6.37 percent of the time, compared with 5.03 percent for totals of 49 or higher. Spreads of 10 or more dropped the rate to 3.56 percent.
Do overtime games go over the total?
Usually. Excluding games that landed exactly on the total, overtime games went over 65.6 percent of the time from 1999 through 2025, compared with 49.5 percent for all games. Since overtime was shortened to 10 minutes in 2017, the over hit in 70.9 percent of overtime games.
Should I add overtime to a same-game parlay?
Only with legs it supports, such as the over or the underdog's spread. Overtime Yes and the over hit together 3.86 percent of the time, versus 2.91 percent if they were independent. Avoid pairing it with a favorite laying points: favorites covered only 18.8 percent of overtime games.
Do favorites win in overtime?
Favorites won 56.3 percent of overtime games that had a decision, but they covered the spread only 18.8 percent of the time. That's because 68.6 percent of decided overtime games finished within 3 points, which is smaller than most favorites' spreads.
When is the overtime prop worth betting live?
When the game is tied late. In 2016-25 play-by-play data, games tied with five minutes left reached overtime 34.16 percent of the time, a fair price around +193. Games tied entering the fourth quarter got there 12.99 percent of the time. Leads of eight or more with five minutes left reached overtime only 1.28 percent of the time.
