Race to 20 Points Parlays, Tested

Expert sports picks and handicapping - The Best Bet on Sports

The team that wins the race to 20 points wins an NFL game 86.81 percent of the time. Across 2,629 regular-season games from 2016 through 2025, a favorite that got to 20 first won 92.14 percent of the time, so pairing race to 20 with the same team's moneyline is close to one bet. Nobody reached 20 in 12.36 percent of games.

The team that wins the race to 20 points wins the NFL game 86.81 percent of the time. Across 2,629 regular-season games from 2016 through 2025, a favorite that reached 20 first went on to win 92.14 percent of the time, and an underdog that got there first still won 77.00 percent of the time. That makes a "race to 20 plus moneyline" parlay on the same team close to a single bet, and a correlation that strong is exactly what sportsbooks price against. In 12.36 percent of games, nobody reached 20 at all. The Best Bet on Sports has built a verified $367,520+ in profit across all sportsbooks over more than twenty years by testing prop markets like this before using them.

"Race to X points" is one of the most popular NFL game props in same-game parlay builders. You pick which team will reach 10, 15, 20 or 30 points first. It sounds like a separate bet from the moneyline. The data says it mostly isn't, and that changes how you should use it.

How Did We Test the Race to 20?

We used the nflverse play-by-play files for every regular-season game from 2016 through 2025, a total of 2,639 games. For each game, we walked through the score play by play and recorded which team reached each threshold first, then checked that team against the final result. We dropped the 10 games that ended in ties, leaving 2,629. For the favorite and underdog splits we also dropped four pick'em games, leaving 2,625.

We tested nine thresholds: 3, 7, 10, 14, 15, 20, 21, 25 and 30 points. Most books post the race at 10, 15, 20 and 30. We also recorded games where neither team reached the number, because that outcome matters for grading.

How Often Does the Race Winner Win the Game?

More often the higher the number, which makes sense. Getting to 3 first says little. Getting to 30 first usually ends the game.

Two columns deserve attention. The "nobody reached it" column jumps from 3.50 percent at 15 points to 12.36 percent at 20 and 56.75 percent at 30. And the race to 20 is where the race winner starts winning the game almost every time, while the "neither" risk is still small enough to bet.

Is Race to 20 Plus the Moneyline a Good Parlay?

It's a parlay that mostly duplicates itself. Here is the race to 20 broken down by the closing spread, for the favorite.

Closing spreadGamesFavorite wins gameFavorite wins race to 20BothBoth, if unrelatedNobody reaches 20
1 to 3 points97656.15%45.18%40.57%25.37%16.29%

All favorites2,62566.63%56.69%52.23%37.77%12.34%

Look at the gap between "Both" and "Both, if unrelated." Across all favorites, the two-leg ticket hit 52.23 percent of the time. If the legs were unrelated, the way a standard parlay assumes, it would hit 37.77 percent. Adding the moneyline to the race to 20 only drops the hit rate from 56.69 percent to 52.23 percent, because the race to 20 winner almost always wins.

In price terms, a two-leg parlay that hits 37.77 percent has fair odds around +165. One that hits 52.23 percent has fair odds around -109. That difference is why most sportsbooks either block the combination or price it inside a same-game parlay at something near the race leg alone. If a book ever offers it at independent-parlay odds, it's mispriced in your favor. In practice that almost never happens.

We covered the same problem with first score and moneyline parlays, which looked like two legs and behaved more like one. Race to 20 is the stronger version of that effect. Scoring first is a weak signal. Getting to 20 first is a strong one.

What Happens When Nobody Reaches 20?

You need to know your book's house rule before betting this market. Some books post the race as a three-way market with "neither" as its own outcome. Others void the bet if no team reaches the number. Under a three-way rule, a "neither" result loses every team bet.

That risk depends heavily on the total.

Closing totalGamesNobody reached 20
40.5 or lower39321.12%
41 to 44.588115.10%
45 to 47.563010.32%
48 to 50.54287.24%
51 or higher2934.10%

In games totaled 40.5 or lower, more than one in five finished with neither team at 20. On a three-way market, that's a fifth of your tickets lost before the teams even matter. In games totaled 51 or higher, it was about one in 25. Race to 20 is a high-total market. In a low-total game, race to 10 or 15 is the cleaner bet, because nearly every game reaches those numbers.

Does It Matter When the Race Is Won?

Surprisingly little. A team that reached 20 first in the second quarter won 86.28 percent of the time (751 games). In the third quarter it was 86.25 percent (807 games), and in the fourth, 87.66 percent (705 games). Getting to 20 by halftime didn't make the lead safer than getting there late. A team that reaches 20 late usually does it in a game where the other team is still stuck in the teens, so the lead is just as real.

The rate has also been stable across eras: 87.72 percent from 2016 through 2020 and 85.90 percent from 2021 through 2025. That's a small drop, consistent with the slightly higher scoring and comeback rates of the last few seasons, but it isn't a trend.

What About Underdogs That Win the Race?

This is the more interesting half of the market. When the underdog reaches 20 first, it wins the game far less often than a favorite does, and the gap grows with the spread.

Closing spreadUnderdog wins race to 20Underdog then wins game
1 to 3 points376 games82.71%
3.5 to 6.5285 games75.44%
7 to 9.5105 games69.52%
10 or more47 games57.45%

A double-digit underdog that gets to 20 first still loses about four times in 10. That's the market telling you what talent gaps do over the rest of a game: the better team usually comes back. Pregame, that makes "underdog race to 20" a cleaner bet than "underdog race to 20 plus underdog moneyline," because the second leg adds real risk. The 10-plus row is only 47 games, though, so read it as a direction rather than a precise number.

How Should You Use Race to X in a Parlay?

Don't stack race and moneyline on the same team. The parlay is close to one bet, so you're paying juice twice for one outcome. If a book allows the pair, check whether the combined price is meaningfully better than the race leg alone. Usually it isn't.

Use race to 10 or 15 in low totals. Under 41 points, race to 20 carries a real "neither" risk on three-way markets. Race to 10 was reached in 99.47 percent of games.

Use the race leg instead of the moneyline, not alongside it. For a favorite you expect to win, race to 20 wins slightly less often than the moneyline (56.69 versus 66.63 percent across all favorites), and the price usually reflects that. The question is whether the plus price on the race is worth the 10-point drop in win rate, which you can calculate before every bet.

Look across games, not within one. Correlation inside a single game is what books charge for. Two race legs in different games are close to independent, which is how a standard parlay is priced. Our NFL same-game parlay guide explains why most same-game correlation is already in the price.

⚔ The Live Edge: Pregame, race to 20 is a moneyline in disguise. Live, it becomes a different market, because the score is known and the race is already partly run. A team leading 14-3 midway through the second quarter is close to a race to 20 winner, and live race prices often lag the game state for a drive or two. Reading game state that way is what our live betting picks are built on, and it is a big part of why we are limited on all six major U.S. sportsbooks.

What Does This Mean When You Buy Football Picks?

It means a service that recommends "race to 20 plus moneyline" tickets is selling one bet as two. Combinations like this look clever in a same-game parlay builder because the payout rises with each leg. The real probability doesn't fall nearly as fast, and the books know it.

Our football betting picks and NFL picks against the spread are built on markets we've tested, and every result is posted on our results page. If you're comparing expert sports picks from different services, ask which parlay legs each one has tested against real outcomes. Our football handicappers page explains how we approach the weekly card, and our basketball handicappers page covers the same testing in NBA race and quarter markets.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does race to 20 points mean in NFL betting?

It's a prop on which team will reach 20 points first. The bet is settled the moment one team gets to 20, no matter what happens later. Books handle games where neither team reaches 20 differently: some treat "neither" as a third outcome that loses team bets, and others void the bet.

How often does the team that reaches 20 first win the game?

From 2016 through 2025, the team that reached 20 points first won 86.81 percent of 2,629 regular-season NFL games. Favorites that got there first won 92.14 percent of the time, and underdogs won 77.00 percent of the time.

Is race to 20 plus moneyline a good parlay?

Usually not. The two legs are so closely related that the ticket hit 52.23 percent of the time across all favorites, compared with 37.77 percent if they were unrelated. Books know this, so they block or reprice the combination, and you end up paying for one bet with two legs.

How often does nobody reach 20 points in an NFL game?

In 12.36 percent of regular-season games from 2016 through 2025. It depends on the total: 21.12 percent of games with a closing total of 40.5 or lower, and 4.10 percent of games with a total of 51 or higher.

Which race to points number is best to bet?

It depends on the total. Race to 10 was reached in 99.47 percent of games, so it carries almost no "neither" risk, but the race winner won the game only 72.50 percent of the time. Race to 20 is more predictive but risky in low totals. Race to 30 went unreached in 56.75 percent of games.

Does it matter which quarter a team reaches 20 points?

Not much. Teams that reached 20 first in the second quarter won 86.28 percent of the time, in the third quarter 86.25 percent, and in the fourth quarter 87.66 percent. Reaching 20 late usually means the opponent is still well short of it.

Should I bet the underdog in a race to 20 market?

It can make sense on its own, but pairing it with the underdog moneyline adds real risk. A double-digit underdog that reached 20 first won only 57.45 percent of the time, though that is based on just 47 games. One- to three-point underdogs that got there first won 82.71 percent of the time.
