Older NFL QBs Against the Spread, Tested

Older NFL quarterbacks don't fade against the spread late in the season. Starters aged 36 or older went 613-614 ATS from 1999 through 2025, a 49.96 percent cover rate, and 342-329 (50.97 percent) from November through January. Their weakest month was September, at 45.14 percent. The market prices quarterback age about as accurately as anything else it sees.
Older NFL quarterbacks don't fade against the spread as the season wears on. Starters aged 36 or older went 613-614-37 against the spread from 1999 through 2025, a 49.96 percent cover rate across 1,264 starts, and they went 342-329 (50.97 percent) from November through January. Their weakest month was actually September, at 45.14 percent. The "old quarterback runs out of gas in November" story is one of the most repeated angles in NFL picks against the spread, and the closing number has already priced it. The Best Bet on Sports has built a verified $367,520+ in profit across all sportsbooks over more than twenty years by testing angles like this before betting them.
This season has given the theory plenty of material. Aaron Rodgers is starting for Pittsburgh at 42. Kirk Cousins, Matthew Stafford and Geno Smith are all 36 or older and starting. Through Week 8 of 2026, quarterbacks in that age group are 20-10 against the spread. Every November someone predicts the wall is coming. We wanted to know whether it ever shows up against the number.
How Did We Test Quarterback Age?
We used every NFL regular-season game from 1999 through 2025 in the nflverse schedule file, which lists each team's starting quarterback, the closing spread and the final score. We joined each starter to his birth date from the nflverse player file and calculated his exact age on game day. Every start was graded against the closing spread from that quarterback's side.
That produced 13,934 graded starts. Because every game has two sides, the full sample is exactly 50.00 percent, 6,778-6,778 with 378 pushes, which is a useful check that the grading is right. The question is whether any age group pulls away from 50.
The 2026 games were kept separate and are only reported as a current-season snapshot. They weren't used in any historical row.
Do Older Quarterbacks Cover the Spread Less Often?
No. Here is every age band from 1999 through 2025.
| Quarterback age on game day | ATS record | Cover rate | Starts |
|---|---|---|---|
| Under 25 | 1,555-1,495-78 | 50.98% | 3,128 |
| 25-27 | 1,782-1,715-106 | 50.96% | 3,603 |
| 28-30 | 1,416-1,440-75 | 49.58% | 2,931 |
| 31-33 | 961-1,053-52 | 47.72% | 2,066 |
| 34-35 | 451-461-30 | 49.45% | 942 |
| 36-37 | 327-326-26 | 50.08% | 679 |
| 38 and older | 286-288-11 | 49.83% | 585 |
The oldest two bands are almost exactly at 50 percent. The lowest band is 31 to 33, at 47.72 percent, and that is the kind of result that appears by chance when you slice a sample seven ways. Its gap from 50 is about two standard errors, which is borderline, and nothing about the bands on either side suggests a real age effect.
Notice how the market treats these quarterbacks. Starters 38 and older closed as favorites by an average of 2.54 points, compared with almost even for every other band above 25. The market knows these are usually established, successful quarterbacks on good teams, and it prices them that way. They then covered at the rate a fairly priced side should.
Do Older Quarterbacks Wear Down Late in the Season?
This is the claim you'll hear most in November, and it has the data backwards.
| Quarterbacks 36 and older, by month | ATS record | Cover rate | Starts |
|---|---|---|---|
| September | 116-141-5 | 45.14% | 262 |
| October | 155-144-9 | 51.84% | 308 |
| November | 149-144-11 | 50.85% | 304 |
| December | 167-168-9 | 49.85% | 344 |
| January | 26-17-3 | 60.47% | 46 |
From November through January, quarterbacks 36 and older went 342-329-23, a 50.97 percent cover rate. In September and October they went 271-285-14, or 48.74 percent. Younger starters barely moved at all: 50.13 percent early and 49.90 percent late.
If there's an age story here, it's September. Older starters covered 45.14 percent of the time in the first month. That sample is only 257 decided games, so the gap from 50 is about one and a half standard errors and could easily be noise. One plausible explanation is that the market starts each season pricing older quarterbacks on their reputation before it has a new season of evidence. By November, that evidence is in the number, and the edge, if there ever was one, is gone.
The January row looks impressive at 60.47 percent, but it rests on 43 decided games. Don't build anything on it.
Does It Matter Whether the Older Quarterback Is the Favorite?
Not in any useful way. Starters 36 and older went 269-261-17 (50.75 percent) as underdogs and 343-350-20 (49.49 percent) as favorites. On the road they went 313-305-19 (50.65 percent), and at home 300-309-18 (49.26 percent). From November on, older quarterbacks covered 51.23 percent as underdogs and 50.78 percent as favorites.
Two more cuts that are often used to sell picks:
- Quarterbacks 40 and older went 113-119-3, a 48.71 percent cover rate, and 66-61-3 from November through January.
- A quarterback 10 or more years older than the opposing starter went 401-438-26, a 47.79 percent cover rate across 865 starts. That is the lowest result in this study, but it is still only about 1.3 standard errors below 50.
The era split is the most interesting finding. From 1999 through 2012, starters 36 and older covered 46.89 percent of the time. From 2013 through 2025, they covered 52.06 percent. The later group includes some of the best old quarterbacks in history: Tom Brady went 84-68 against the spread at 36 or older, Drew Brees went 48-35, and Aaron Rodgers 47-40. The earlier group included Vinny Testaverde at 28-36. The age didn't decide those records. The quarterback did.
What Does the 2026 Season Show So Far?
Starters aged 36 or older are 20-10 against the spread through Week 8 of 2026:
| Quarterback | Team | ATS through Week 8 |
|---|---|---|
| Aaron Rodgers | Steelers | 6-2 |
| Kirk Cousins | Raiders | 6-2 |
| Matthew Stafford | Rams | 4-4 |
| Geno Smith | Jets | 2-2 |
| Case Keenum | Bears | 2-0 |
Thirty starts is not a trend, and the 1999-2025 data says what usually happens next: the market adjusts and the cover rate drifts back toward 50. In the nflverse schedule file this week, Cousins's Raiders are 10-point underdogs at San Francisco and Smith's Jets are 9.5-point underdogs at Kansas City, while Stafford's Rams are 5.5-point favorites at Washington. Pittsburgh is on its bye. None of those numbers gives an age-based edge in either direction.
What Should You Ask a Pick Service About Angles Like This?
Age is one of the easiest stories in football to sell, because everyone can see it. A quarterback in his 40s, a cold November road trip and a young pass rush on the other side make a great paragraph. The data shows the closing spread prices that story correctly.
When a service sells you a situational angle, ask three questions:
1. What is the record against the closing spread, and over how many games? A 20-10 run over half a season isn't evidence. A 613-614 record over 27 years is. 2. Does the angle still work in recent seasons? The age split flipped between eras, which is a sign the effect lives in the individual players, not in age. 3. Is the edge in the pregame number, or after kickoff? Most public angles are priced before kickoff. In-game information isn't.
This is the same lesson our tests of quarterbacks facing their former teams and teams coming off a bye produced. A story everyone knows is a story the market has priced.
A real sports handicapping service should be able to show you which angles it has tested and what they returned. Our NFL picks against the spread are built that way, and our football handicappers page explains the weekly process. If you're deciding whether to pay for sports picks, compare how each service handles a narrative like this one, and look at our expert sports picks page for how we choose markets. The same approach runs through our basketball handicappers page, where veteran-star narratives are just as common.
Where This Analysis Stops
This study uses closing spreads and final scores from regular-season games only. It doesn't test opening lines, which are less efficient and could carry a small age effect the closing number removes. It doesn't separate quarterbacks who finished the game from those who were injured or pulled, so a few rows grade a starter for a game he didn't finish.
Age was calculated from birth dates in the nflverse player file, and quarterbacks without a listed birth date were left out. Finally, "36 and older" is a population of very good players, because bad quarterbacks rarely keep starting into their late 30s. That survivorship is part of why their records look normal, and it is also why age alone isn't a betting signal.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do older NFL quarterbacks cover the spread?
At almost exactly the expected rate. From 1999 through 2025, starters aged 36 or older went 613-614-37 against the closing spread, a 49.96 percent cover rate across 1,264 regular-season starts. The market prices quarterback age accurately.
Do older quarterbacks fade late in the NFL season?
Not against the spread. Starters 36 and older covered 50.97 percent of the time from November through January, compared with 48.74 percent in September and October. Their weakest month was September, at 45.14 percent, not the late-season months the narrative points to.
How are older quarterbacks doing against the spread in 2026?
Starters aged 36 or older are 20-10 against the spread through Week 8 of 2026. Aaron Rodgers and Kirk Cousins are each 6-2, Matthew Stafford is 4-4, Geno Smith is 2-2 and Case Keenum is 2-0. Thirty starts is far too small a sample to call a trend.
Are quarterbacks over 40 a good bet against the spread?
No better than average. Starters aged 40 or older went 113-119-3 against the spread from 1999 through 2025, a 48.71 percent cover rate. From November through January they went 66-61-3.
Does an age gap between quarterbacks matter for betting?
Not reliably. A starter who was 10 or more years older than the opposing quarterback went 401-438-26 against the spread, a 47.79 percent cover rate over 865 starts. That is within normal variation of 50 percent and shouldn't be bet on its own.
Which older quarterbacks covered the most?
Among starters aged 36 or older from 1999 through 2025, Tom Brady went 84-68 against the spread, Drew Brees 48-35, Aaron Rodgers 47-40 and Peyton Manning 33-23. Vinny Testaverde went 28-36. The records track the quarterback, not the age.
How should I use quarterback age when picking against the spread?
Treat it as context, not as an edge. The closing spread already reflects age, so an age-based angle should only matter if you have information the market doesn't. Most of that information appears during the game, which is where live betting can still find value.
