West Coast Teams at 1 PM ET: ATS Tested

West Coast NFL teams playing 1 p.m. Eastern road games have not been a reliable fade against the spread. From 2000 through 2025 they went 140-135-7 ATS, a 50.91 percent cover rate. They covered 46.15 percent through 2014, then 56.06 percent from 2015 on. The stronger body-clock signal was at night, where West teams covered 70.59 percent before 2015 and 54.84 percent after.

Fading West Coast NFL teams in 1 p.m. Eastern road games is one of the oldest situational angles in football betting, and twenty-six seasons of closing lines say it no longer works. From 2000 through 2025, Pacific time zone teams playing early road games in the Eastern time zone went 140-135-7 against the spread, a 50.91 percent cover rate. Through 2014 they covered only 46.15 percent. Since 2015 they have covered 56.06 percent. The body-clock edge that did show up was in night games, and it has shrunk too. The Best Bet on Sports has built a verified $367,520+ in profit across all sportsbooks over more than twenty years by testing angles like this before betting them.

The theory is simple and sounds like science. A 1 p.m. Eastern kickoff is 10 a.m. on a West Coast body clock. Players who normally peak in the late afternoon are asked to play at what feels like breakfast. Fade the tired travelers and collect.

The theory has real research behind it on athletic performance and circadian rhythm. The betting question is different. It is not whether the effect exists. It is whether the closing point spread already accounts for it.

Today's slate makes the question concrete. San Francisco plays at Atlanta at 1 p.m. Eastern, and the nflverse schedule file lists the 49ers as 2.5-point favorites as of this writing. That is exactly the spot the old trend says to fade.

How Was the Study Built?

We used the public nflverse game file, which lists every regular-season game since 2000 with its kickoff time in Eastern time, closing spread and final score. Neutral-site games, including international games, were excluded.

We assigned every team to its home time zone. Pacific teams are Seattle, San Francisco, the Rams after their 2016 move to Los Angeles, the Chargers in both San Diego and Los Angeles, and the Raiders in both Oakland and Las Vegas. Eastern teams are the 17 franchises based in the Eastern time zone, including Indianapolis and Detroit.

Kickoffs were split into three windows: early (before 2 p.m. Eastern), late afternoon (the 4:05 and 4:25 windows), and night.

A cover rate of 52.4 percent is the break-even line at standard -110 pricing. Any angle below that loses money over time, even if it wins more than half its games.

Do West Coast Teams Cover in 1 P.M. Eastern Road Games?

About as often as anyone else. This is the full record for Pacific teams on the road in the Eastern time zone, 2000 through 2025.

In the early window, West Coast travelers covered at almost exactly the rate of every road team in the league. Fading them would have won 49.09 percent of decided games, well below break-even.

Straight up, the travelers did lose more than they won, going 130-152 in early games. But that is because they were usually underdogs. On average the West Coast team was a 2.08-point underdog and lost by 1.61 points. The market priced the disadvantage almost perfectly.

Favorites and underdogs told the same story. West Coast road favorites in early games went 52-51-1 against the spread. West Coast road underdogs went 88-84-6.

Did the 1 P.M. Fade Ever Work?

It did, once. The split by era is the most important table in this post.

EraPacific teams, early ET road gamesCover rate
2000 through 201466-7746.15%
2015 through 202574-5856.06%

Through 2014, fading the West Coast traveler at 1 p.m. covered 53.85 percent of decided games, enough to beat -110 pricing. Since 2015, the same fade has covered only 43.94 percent. The angle did not just fade away. It flipped.

The 2015-2025 number is not a signal to start backing West Coast travelers blindly. With 132 decided games, the plausible range runs from roughly 47.7 to 64.4 percent, which still includes break-even. What the flip does show is that the market adjusted. Once the body-clock idea became common knowledge, the price moved to account for it, and possibly past it.

Team-level splits are noisy but instructive. The Raiders, in Oakland and Las Vegas combined, went 31-43 in early Eastern road games, while the Chargers and Rams in Los Angeles were a combined 28-18. Those gaps mostly reflect how good each franchise was across those years, not how well it handled an alarm clock. Seattle went 29-26-5 and San Francisco 29-28-2.

Where Did the Body-Clock Effect Actually Show Up?

At night. The circadian research that started the 1 p.m. theory actually predicts something more specific: West Coast teams should hold an edge in night games, when an 8:20 p.m. Eastern kickoff is 5:20 p.m. on their body clock, while the Eastern opponent plays a fourth quarter that ends close to 11:30 p.m. on its own.

We combined every night game between a Pacific team and an Eastern team, regardless of which team was home, and measured the West Coast side against the spread.

EraWest Coast team in night games vs. Eastern opponentCover rate
2000 through 202558-38-260.42%
2000 through 201424-1070.59%
2015 through 202534-28-254.84%

That is a real historical edge. Through 2014, West Coast teams covered seven of every ten night games against Eastern opponents. Sunday night games were the strongest slice of the full sample at 32-16-1, while Monday night games went 20-15-1.

But look at the second era. Since 2015, the same spot covered 54.84 percent, with a plausible range of roughly 41.9 to 67.7 percent across 62 decided games. Like the 1 p.m. trend, the night trend was published, discussed, and priced. What remains is too small and too uncertain to bet on its own.

One more split stood out, and we flag it as a best-of-several result. Eastern teams traveling west for late-afternoon games, which kick off around 1 p.m. local time, covered 55.20 percent (154-125-9). That is the travel spot with the most normal body-clock timing for the visitor, and it was the strongest road window in the data. We tested enough windows that one of them was bound to look good by chance, so treat it as a question, not a system.

Does Extra Rest Help the West Coast Traveler?

Not in this sample. West Coast teams on a normal seven-day week went 109-101-5 in early Eastern road games. Teams with eight or more days of rest, which includes coming off a bye or a Thursday game, went 20-26-1. That sample is small, and our separate NFL bye week rest study found rest edges are mostly priced in league-wide. Totals showed nothing either: early games with a West Coast traveler went 137 overs, 138 unders and 7 pushes.

What About 2026 So Far?

Four West Coast teams have played early Eastern road games through Week 7 Thursday, and they are 1-3 against the spread. The Chargers lost by 8 at Buffalo as 7-point underdogs, Seattle lost by 2 at Washington as an 8.5-point favorite, the Rams won by 4 at Philadelphia as 3.5-point favorites, and the Raiders lost by 28 at New England.

That is four games. It will tempt bettors who remember the old trend, and it means nothing statistically.

Today, San Francisco at Atlanta is the only early-window game on the Week 7 Sunday slate that fits this study. The 49ers have gone 29-28-2 against the spread in early Eastern road games since 2000. We are not taking a side here. The point is that the travel story is not, by itself, a reason to fade them. Sunday night's Kansas City at Seattle game falls outside this study, because Kansas City is in the Central time zone.

What Does This Tell You About Betting Trends?

Every trend in this post was real once. The 1 p.m. fade beat the closing line for fifteen years. The West Coast night edge covered 70 percent for fifteen years. Both lost most or all of their value once they became common knowledge.

That is the life cycle of nearly every public betting angle, and it is why a trend you can read about in a pregame show is the least likely to still be in the price. Our study of road teams on their second straight trip found the same pattern: a real gap from 2015 through 2019 that disappeared after. Our rookie quarterback ATS test is another angle that sounds stronger than the numbers support.

⚔ The Live Edge: A travel effect, if it exists on a given day, is not something you have to guess at before kickoff. It shows up on the field: a sluggish opening drive, a defense that cannot get off the field, a team that looks a step slow in the first quarter. Live prices react to the score, but they react more slowly to how a team looks. Reading that in real time is the work behind our live betting picks, and it is part of why we are limited on all six major U.S. sportsbooks.

To be clear about that callout: this study uses closing spreads and final scores only. It contains no in-game prices, so it does not show that live markets misprice travel. The case for live betting here is structural reasoning, not a result from these games.

How Should You Judge a Service That Sells Travel Angles?

Ask for the era split. Any angle that worked before 2015 and has not been tested since is a history lesson, not a pick.

A credible sports handicapping service should be able to tell you whether its angles beat the closing number recently, on a sample large enough to mean something. That standard applies to expert sports picks of every kind. If you want sides that start from price instead of a narrative, compare our NFL picks against the spread, our weekly NFL picks, and today's best bets today board. For the specific matchup in this post, see our 49ers picks. And with the NBA season open, our basketball handicappers put the same scrutiny on the NBA's own travel and back-to-back angles.

What Are the Limits of This Study?

  • Time zones, not distance. We grouped teams by home time zone. A trip from Seattle to Miami and a trip from Las Vegas to Detroit count the same.
  • Closing lines only. Results are against the closing spread. A bet placed earlier at a different number had a different expected value.
  • Regular season only. Playoff and neutral-site games were excluded, including international games.
  • Small slices. Team-level, rest and night splits use small samples, and we tested several windows. Any single striking number could be chance.
  • No in-game data. The study cannot say whether travel affects early drives specifically, only the final result against the spread.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do West Coast teams struggle in 1 p.m. Eastern games against the spread?

Not in recent seasons. From 2000 through 2025, Pacific time zone teams playing early road games in the Eastern time zone went 140-135-7 against the spread, a 50.91 percent cover rate, nearly identical to the 51.12 percent for all NFL road teams. They covered 46.15 percent through 2014 and 56.06 percent from 2015 through 2025.

Should you bet against West Coast teams traveling east?

The historical record does not support it as a standalone bet. Fading West Coast teams in 1 p.m. Eastern road games covered 53.85 percent of decided games from 2000 through 2014, but only 43.94 percent from 2015 through 2025. The closing spread now appears to account for the travel, and the fade has lost money since 2015.

Do West Coast teams have an edge in night games?

They did. In night games against Eastern opponents, West Coast teams went 24-10 against the spread from 2000 through 2014, a 70.59 percent cover rate. From 2015 through 2025 they went 34-28-2, or 54.84 percent, with a plausible range that includes break-even. The edge appears to have been mostly priced out.

Which West Coast teams have covered most often in early Eastern games?

Since 2000, the Los Angeles Chargers went 15-9 and the Los Angeles Rams 13-9 in early Eastern road games, while the Raiders went a combined 31-43 in Oakland and Las Vegas. Seattle was 29-26-5 and San Francisco 29-28-2. These samples are small and mostly reflect each franchise's overall quality, not its travel habits.

Is there a 49ers travel angle against the Falcons on October 25?

San Francisco plays at Atlanta at 1 p.m. Eastern on October 25, 2026, listed as a 2.5-point favorite in the nflverse schedule as of this writing. The 49ers have gone 29-28-2 against the spread in early Eastern road games since 2000. That history does not support fading them on travel alone, and we are not taking a side in this post.

Does a bye week help West Coast teams travel east?

Not in this data. West Coast teams with eight or more days of rest went 20-26-1 against the spread in early Eastern road games, compared with 109-101-5 on a normal week. The rested sample is small, and league-wide rest edges have largely been priced into closing lines.

Why do betting trends like this stop working?

Because once a trend is widely known, bettors act on it and sportsbooks adjust the price. The 1 p.m. West Coast fade and the West Coast night edge both beat the closing number for about fifteen years, then lost most or all of their value after 2015. That is why an angle should be judged on recent results against the closing line, not on its reputation.
